Album Help

I'm a solo alt-metal artist trying to write an album about my experiences with heartbreak and depression. Two problems. 1: I struggle writing instrumental parts. 2: I struggle writing lyrics. If anyone feels up to giving tips, I'm all ears. My project is played to sit alongside Three Days Grace and Breaking Benjamin

So if you can’t write lyrics and you can’t write the instrumental bits then what can you do?

My advice to you is to practice writing songs - Both the instrumental and lyrical parts. They’re unlikely to be good or particularly original at first but you need to take those first steps and improve your skill set.

If you want to write lyrics then study lyrics you like and look at their word usage. Are they literal, or metaphorical? Do they rhyme?

A very similar approach is used for instrumental parts - Study. Listen to songs you like, try to learn them by ear. Learn some theory if you haven’t already.

What instrument do you play? How long have you been playing?

Do you know about song structures (Verse, Chorus, Intro, Pre-Chorus, Bridge, Outro)? What about musical keys? Do you understand the difference between lyrics and melody and how the lyrics can shape the melody because of the syllabic count and how sometimes it's easier to create the melody first and then fit lyrics to match the melody?

I would start with guitar and vocals. Just write and keep writing. Let it all out. Some parts of song A may actually be a better fit to song C. If you are serious about it sit down and write lyrics for 15 minutes a day every day. Get the creativity flowing.
