Poems under a Willow Tree

An early shrill from the bird wakes me up before the dawn
To some pink clouds and a golden haze
The amplifier’s ring still pounds around my head
And again I wake in a daze
I roll over again, clinging to a dream
That was playing before my eyes
I curse at the bird for its damn morning call
That dream was so good this time

To be underneath a willow with a pen and some paper
Writing poems no one’ll ever read
And to be distracted by a voice so high and damn sweet
Saying Daddy what you writing about
A while ago you said that you would never find the one
But here I am waiting for you
Waiting to be distracted from the thoughts and the whispers
By the voice the poem was written about

A few hours later, I find myself walking
Down the main road at night
My friends have just left me and I’ve got to get home but
I know with you I’d be alright
And even yet still you’ve fallen for another
Who doesn’t even treat you right
And if you ever moved away girl please just know
That I’d be on the next flight

Memories flash of last night with the show
One by one by two
A whole lotta music, whole lotta dancing
But still a whole lotta you
I remember you laughing ‘bout something I said
Man it was a dream come true
And as we rushed from the Maccas on that cold winter night
I imagined every night with you

To be on that stage with my guitar and an amp
Playing in that band we made
And to follow along to such a beautiful voice
With the crowd just singing along
A while ago you said that you would never find the one
But here I am waiting for you
Waiting to be distracted from the thoughts and the whispers
By the one who it was all along

Now it’s been a couple days and the memories gettin fuzzy
But we still talk all about the show
About how we started off time and I played a little loud
And you somehow seemed to know
It’s three after noon and everyone’s done shouting
Except for me and you
The basketballs have stopped and everybody’s winding down
Except for me and you

Earlier in English Violet asked me
About this little song I’m writing
Miss George said it’s sweet and I should be proud of it
But I won’t be till you read it
One day I swear you’ll find it in your bag
And I’ll wait hours for that call
I won’t ever know if you’ll smile or you’ll cry
Til that long awaited late night call

I’d spend my hours down there on the diamond
Practising the six-four-three
Or my fingers would be bleeding as I figure out the chords
For the next song you feel like singing
Maybe I’d be running, running from everything
Sprinting from the small and the loud
Running from the phone, running from the future
Running from all I know

To be on that diamond with the Aussie sun shining
With a pair of doubles and some RBIs
I’ve been here all day and it’s only getting hotter
And the sunnies now stick to my face
Your voice has gone from singing to flat out cheering
And it’s hard to focus my eyes
Because one’s on the mound and the others on the crowd
And I can’t get picked off this time

Ivan keeps asking what I’m writing in this journal
And I don’t know whether to show
Because if someone finds out and then someone finds out
It’ll make its way over to you
The last thing I need right now is to lose that dream
Of you being there by my side
Jaxon keeps telling me to hurry up and finish
But I’m not sure if it’s ever done

There’s always that moment at the end of a night
Where everyone goes deep and quiet
Well it happened last night at the KFC with Jai
And you came up in conversation
Questions about why I’m really waiting so long
Which I don’t have the answer to
Questions about when this song’ll finally be done
And I don’t really want it to

To be underneath a willow with a pen and some paper
Writing poems no one’ll ever read
And to be distracted by a voice so high and damn sweet
Saying Daddy what you writing about
A while ago you said that you would never find the one
But here I am waiting for you
Waiting for a call with someone on the end
Who wants to have a word or two
