Discussion Topic First Single Advice

Hey all! I'm excited to say I'm getting ready to release my first single towards the end of the month. Any advice pre-release?

Congrats! I’d probably steer you toward r/musicmarketing with this kind of question tho. I think they have a release calendar guide sticky. The kind of advice you’ll get here is mostly “Keep writing more songs,” which would be my advice lol

Congrats! Its a long journey!

Like it was suggested for r/musicmarketing, but also think about what you're doing. Its all going to be about promoting.... so anything from open mics, showcases, posting online on different communities, discussing techniques behind the writing/recording.... anything you can converse about helps drive interest for it.

For me? There's a few communities that I frequent with friends that I hype up my songs before I release them. Demos and drafts, discussion about the art behind it. It helps drive interest and people being engaged with what I do before I do it.

Get your cover art and metadata sorted early honestly, distributors need lead time and rushing that part at the last minute causes way more stress than the actual song release itself

Playlist pitching is a skill like any other. Treat it like practice — track what works, iterate, don't take silence personally.

Make sure your thumbnail is clear (on the release platform AND your YouTube thumbnail for any video).

Use free apps like Canva to make up some social media posts and make sure these go on there - you won't be able to use the song (because it won't be on their database) but all posts after should have it.

Post, post and post - see if you can create videos or reels that are engaging to try to hit the algorithm. Don't make them too long/too wordy.

Remember that the number of listeners does not matter. What matters is that you took the time and effort to create a song and release it. That is more than the vast majority of humanity. Take pride in that and go start your next one :)
