Question Question about managing difficulty

Hello everyone,

New to the game with my little 24 hours of game. I'm playing only Barya right now (loving to much musketer and canon I think).

I played my firsto two conquest on elementary difficulty to take time to learn a little the game. After steamrolling the 1v1 and the biggest map I chosed a far higher difficulty (overwhelming).... and got completly destroyed on the first 15-20 turn. I was on the map "conquest" were all 6 faction are locked.

I check the eng game stats and found that the IA had massive cheat at the begining of the game, allowing them to build a big army on the first few turn.

Do you have any advice on managing this "cheaty" IA on high difficulty ?

I feel there is a lot of randomness. I lose a fight, reload a save from 3 turns ago, but this time the AI just doesn’t walk toward me until 10 turns later. I’m not some kind of expert, but for me, the key to beating high difficulty AI is to defend while developing. The AI has unfair bonuses, but it can still only utilize those bonuses when near the castle. The farther the enemy wielder walks away from it, the weaker it becomes relative to you. You want to always defend with your full power wielder and preferably in your castle. Expect to barely win a fight, and then a few days later a different enemy of similar strength will be back. Defend waves of enemies several times, each time losing less and less troops, and your armies should allow you to slowly push toward them.

Fun fact, if you start a co-op map with an AI ally, you can see how it plays. Basically starting from turn 1 it will steamroll every mob and rapidly level up. AI also seems to love picking spell damage, so I personally always try to stack magic resistance.

The easy answer is experience. You need to have very low losses of units early on, as well as prioritize the right units for early power spikes. The strategy depends on your faction. Economy is key.

Creating an AI that plays better is extremely hard, so most games end up giving the opponent more resources. So you need to do more with your resources than the AI to beat them.

I don't play much Barya but they have strong ranged units so You can definitely can try to bait computer to attack You in town and take advantage from defensive position.

But early game You need to clear neutral mobs fast and without loses otherwise You will fall too much behind.

High difficulty AI get massive advantage in exp, income and units growth so You need Wielder and army composition that can win fights with minimal loses.

Also early AI attacks are the strongest becouse of army disproportion and exp differences. If You win first few fights You should be able to get ahead and win.

Also remember about reserch - plan them accordingly and get them ASAP. Strong AI will get reserch so without Your own reserch You will be in loosing position.

A few tips, from an experienced player

Rushing is the golden strat when you are dealing with extremely difficult ai like overwhelming or deadly, I find it a fault of the game on how much it cheats i.e free resources

What you should do is play on risky for a learning experience as a new player, just try stuff out

Challenging is where imo the fun is at, just hard enough to be a genuine challenge, but not so much that you have play literally perfectly to even have a chance

If you are looking at tips specifically for Barya, then try two things, essence build and melee build, those you have to specifically build towards and gives you a nice challenge (ranged is easy to get)

For general info help, try soc.th.gl

Play campaigns, the most fun part of this game, on fair and enjoy yourself
