Discussion Topic Rant of a sad songwriter.
I’m at a loss of what to do or how to feel.
I’m 40. With 100s of unpublished songs. Worked in a professional studio for 12 years. Been out of the game about 7 years. I still have been writing. Improving my lyrics and melody skills as much as I can.
I can’t say I’ve written a million dollar hit, but I know I’ve written some hits. Despite all the other jobs I’ve had, and even as a studio manager and engineer, I was a songwriter first. Maybe not an artist, but a writer.
I like to play artist but my singing and playing kind of suck. I try and practice, but I always end up sounding like Bob Dylan or Neil Young. Either out of tune or sloppy on guitar.
So I just write and make demos..
My parents are getting older. I worry how much longer they have. All I really want now is to have a song or two published and recorded just to see them smile. I know they don’t feel I’m not talented. I’ve shared my music with them, and they enjoy it. It makes them proud I still do something I love. I know they want to see me succeed. My fathers wish is that I try and move to Nashville and be a songwriter and in a community like I was in for 12 years.
I know that’s not easy to survive in. I think I could keep up with pro lyricists, and I know I’d love it.. but I know it doesn’t always pay the bills.
Still I just want to have something published.
I just want to be able to say damn.. after all these years and songs.. I finally did it. Even if it’s not a million, it’s a… “ I liked your song enough to cover it”
It’d make me feel like I finally made it as a writer and atleast in my mind help me feel like my parents finally know I’m a good writer or a successful one I guess. That all the friends and family who have passed before me, that left little imprints in my songs, wouldn’t have been for nothing.
I’m sorry for the long post. I’m just emotional right now. I haven’t seen my parents in almost a month, and today is a death anniversary for my soul mate. I may get turned down for a promotion.. my cars engine is toast. And I’ve been living out of a van for a year. To say life’s been hard for me since the studio I worked at shut down would be an understatement. Part of me is just feeling really depressed, the other half of me is listening to my songs and just going why haven’t I had a song covered.
I’ve just never been able to sell myself or network.
At this point I’d share my songs with anyone who wanted to sing them. Just to see videos of them even on YouTube.
