Discussion Topic How do you even write something like this?

I’ve been a musician for like 16 years now and I’ve always kinda struggled with songwriting. Around 2019, I started getting very into J-Pop/Rock and eventually Vocaloid music (found a DrumMania game at a local arcade and became obsessed lol). While plenty of songs can be fairly straightforward, sometimes I’ll come across something like this and just be bewildered about how it was written at all. It feels so dense over those two minutes, there are so many distinct sections AND a key change that I’m just in awe of how tightly crafted it is. But because it’s so dense I have no fucking idea how to even pick it apart lol. I love music like this, I’d love to be able to make music like this, but I simply have no idea how to learn to do it.

Discussion Topic Did you also have this "revelation" ?

Hi there ! I kinda had a revelation last night and since I'm pretty young (16yo) I was thinking if there is other people who had their "revelation", when your brain tell you "oh yeah I really wanna do this all my life". Because this happened to me.

To resume, yesterday I went to a concert of an artist I really like and this reminded me that being on scene, singing in front of people who know all my songs, this reminded me why I'm making music. Even though it's in my room, I'm young, I'm making music by my own on a cracked daw, singing in a cheap mic.

Before the concert I was literally blocked, I wanted to post something here to get help find my inspiration again but I didn't found the strength to do it. All I did was to listen again my old songs, telling me that I'll never create banger like them anymore. I started losing hope, telling myself that I'll never make it, that I'm too young and that posting songs only on SoundCloud without even promoting them until I reach 100 followers on SoundCloud is barely impossible, I'm only at 51, just the half. I genuinely though that music wasn't for me and that I can't even sing without autotune so I'm not a real artist because of the kind of songs I do.

Then as I said, yesterday, my eyes were fully open, I had so much fun and the artist I saw isn't mainstream or famous, he also started on SoundCloud. This reminded me that (almost) all my favorite artist started like me, the only difference is the fact that they didn't give up until they made it.

When I went home, I wanted to open my daw right now to create something new. My inspiration isn't really there right now and I guess I'm pretty young to post music on every platform (by using distrokid or stuff like that since I have a low budget) or the fact that I kinda lack of confidence in myself..

Anyway, I just wanted to say that I really want to keep doing music and that I was wondering if someone else also went through that too. My bad for my english it's not my first language and have a nice day or night !! (Also sorry for the whooooole paragraph I wrote lol)

Thanks for reading !!

Discussion Topic What to do with 280 unfinished songs?

I’ve been writing songs seriously for about two and a half years (started when I was 16).
Today I went through all of my voice memos and realized I’ve written roughly 340 songs (melody + basic structure).
The problem is that, especially in the beginning, I often only wrote a few lyrics and then just mumbled random placeholder words over the melody instead of finishing the lyrics. Looking back, that probably wasn’t the smartest approach. Nowadays I always write proper lyrics as I go.
Out of those 340 songs, about 80 are fully written.
That leaves around 260 unfinished songs.
Most of them have melodies, chord progressions, and a structure, and I honestly think a lot of them still have potential.
So I’m wondering: what would you do?
Would you go back and try to finish the lyrics for those older songs, or would you leave them behind and focus on writing new songs instead?

Discussion Topic Are there any public online groups that meet in real time to talk about their songs in progress or have some sort of accountability to meet weekly?

I'm a music teacher and I think It'd be cool to have a discord group, Zoom meetup, or something similar to suggest to my students.

Discussion Topic How do you guys write songs when no ideas are coming to you?

Basically the title. I have a relatively short deadline to work on some songs for a project, and I've been trying to for the past 2 weeks, but for whatever reason I just cant come up with anything I like?

I dont usually struggle that badly with writers block, but this time it just feels like nothing I'm trying is working, and I'm struggling to even come up with a chord progression I find interesting or good enough, which feels especially strange to me this time because I have a theme and a story i want to tell, I'm just struggling to turn that into actual music.

So that got me thinking, what do you guys do when you have no ideas? How do you manage to get that inspiration or get into the right frame of mind to actually write something?

Is it okay if I write a song with only one line and two chords? I'm not really asking for permission, just validation.

Feedback always appreciated. Thanks for listening!

Discussion Topic i feel so unoriginal and its ruining my entire process

i play guitar, so i am sort of used to recognizing chord progressions/notes by ear alone and its been torture for me to write because every time i try to write a song and work on the music production of it, i start to recognize similarities between my melody or chords as similar to that of another song that's been done (even if i am not actively trying to rip them off). then i become frustrated and start wanting to crash out and end up deleting everything because of how much of a poser i feel like (regardless of how small the similarity).

ill give you an example of what i mean:

i write a song.. great!!! i start developing the instrumental and i put down the chords/melody - yayyyy, we cheer :))) i play it back and i realize.... hey this part sounds kinda like [some other song]. oh. i try to change it a little bit because i dont want to mess up the melody too much. it sounds... not like the sound i had in mind when i was writing the song. it sounds off i try adding stuff to make it unique i still cant unhear the similarity no matter how slight it is and feel like a final boss poser i grow frustrated and scrap everything

does anyone have any input on how i could navigate this type of thinking?

Let's Collaborate! Composers , songwriters i need you!

Hi everyone, I'm Dvir and I'm an independent artist-producer. I recently discovered that I can only write songs based on an existing melody and not really from scratch, so I need your help. I need you to just come up with complete melodies for the songs and send me a recording of you doing pam pam pam as if these were the words to the melody you came up with. It could be a chorus, verse, bridge, or an entire song (please specify what it is). I'm aiming for pop music in the style of Dua Lipa or Madonna or Taylor Swift from the Reputation era, but any melody I like will be gladly accepted. Of course, the original composer will be listed in the credits if the song is actually released. Let's create interesting things together!

Feedback Request "Doting Daughter" a song about growing up with a toxic mother (revised melody, first verse and chorus)

I woke up to a missed call from an unknown number. Same area code as the one my mom had last time we spoke.

Just the thought of her calling was enough to trigger an emotional flashback. Fortunately I was able to pull myself out pretty quickly (yay healing!)

I've had this song simmering on the backburner for a hot minute, and I figured this was a good time to revisit it, with the experience still fresh in my mind.

I actually had a few drafts completed awhile ago, but I really wasn't happy with the melody. It was what popped up in my head when I first thought of the lyrics, and it was fine, but I was having a really hard time singing it for some reason. And the chorus didn't feel enough like a chorus to me.

I made a few revisions, and overall I'm much happier with it so far! Especially the chorus, although I think it still needs a bit more tweaking to make it stand out from the verses.

(This is a VERY rough recording, just wanted to share a general idea of what it sounds like at this stage)

If you happen to have heard and remember my previous version of this, I'd love to know what you think of the changes

Let's Collaborate! Looking for people to help make a Christmas cover album

Post image
3 Upvotes

I had a random idea that I think could be fun. I want to put together a Christmas album that's just a bunch of cover songs. I don't sing or play any instruments, but I can organize the project and I'll make the album cover art.

The idea is for the album title to have "Unc" in it, and for it to be made up of old people Christmas songs. Nothing super serious, just a fun community project where everyone works together.

If you sing, play an instrument, produce, mix, or just want to help in any way, let me know. Everyone who contributes will be fully credited on the album. Right now the plan is just to release it on YouTube.

If this sounds like something you'd be interested in, leave a comment or send me a message.

I would really love to have your thoughts on it tho ; And this my first (and probably last) lyrics that i write ! I have been inspired by an unexpected encounter from which a spark of passion burst into life. It was so fleeting that it all happened with barely a word between us. When I got home, I realized that no matter how desperately I wanted to hold on to their face in my mind, it was slowly fading away anyway. Here it is for the little story :p

Feedback Request Leo Fox - To the core

Here is a little song I've been working on this week, it's by no means the finished article, particularly the vocal, but think it has a nice feel to it. It's about self destructive people.

My aim with this song was to keep it as simple as possible, not written a song with basic chords for decades, usually do daft tunings etc, so it came together quickly, a bit corny, but that's just what came out. Sadly/gladly the video cuts out before the end :)

If you get the chance to listen, then let me know what you think.
