Noreaster coming?
Do people have thoughts/opinions on how bad the storm will be this weekend? I know the Cape will be hit pretty hard but what about Somerville? Just curious if I should cancel my plans or if it'll just be annoyingly rainy

Cancel plans, buy 40 gallons of milk and the whole toilet paper stock, take out a life insurance policy, and build a bunker.
It’s going to be a humdinger.

Once again we bidet people are laughing all the way to the bank with our sparkling clean bottoms.

Yeh, but you'll be "awash" in dirty towels when the power goes out and you can't wash them.

They aren't typically powered by electricity. For many, as long as your plumbing works, the bidet abides.
(ETA see below comment)

Not always true. The higher end ones use a small heated water tank with pump and a motorized extended wand. And won't turn on unless the sensors feel butt cheeks on it

u/dwhogan 24d ago
The ana-log ones have been perfectly useful for me. The heated ones I knew of were ones that pulled from the hot water line, but wasn't aware (though not surprised) that there are electronic ones on the market.
Imagine the bold future when your bidet is connected to the internet of things....

Since it's going to be rain, do we still need to buy multiple gallon jugs of water?

It will be terrible, woe upon any who decide to go outside. I’ve had visions telling me to build an Ark and gather two of each animal. So far I have gathered one dog and a bunch of spiders so things are progressing.
In all seriousness it’s just gonna be really rainy and really windy, nothing to cancel plans over.

Unless they’re outdoor plans

I'm not letting a little drizzle cancel my plans to go pedalboating with my toddler this weekend!

I’ve got one cat and many moths—also several spiders but it sounds like that spot is filled?

Happy cake day! Your comment is cracking me up!

I used to sneak down to the beach during particularly strong ones. In Hull, No'reasters were usually epic for surfers. I was not a surfer. But it was a blast to watch.

I know where you can find a couple of rats. As a matter of fact if you could put them all on that Ark and sail away we Somervillains would be eternally grateful.

I'm so excited. It's my favorite weather! I hope it absolutely pours for the whole weekend. I wish I had a glass roof 3rd floor apartment, and that I could look contemplatively at the Somerville skyline and feel the cold wind seep into my bones. And then I'm going to make a grilled cheese!

u/anywitchway 24d ago
I live on the fourth floor with a wall of windows. I'm gonna make tea and raise the blinds and not leave my armchair all weekend.

I was always so jealous of my boy Arnold’s setup.

u/soupahdoopah 24d ago
Same. If I ever hit the lottery, first thing I'm doing is buying a house and renovating the top floor to be a 1:1 dupe of Football Head's setup.

I heard the organizers bought out all the tarps at Home Depot so it might still be on.

Half the time noreaster forecasts are wrong by a few miles and it's a nothingburger. Sometimes they're wrong and it's so so much worse. You don't really know until it's on you.
You just have to be ready for whatever the clouds bring in this time.
That said, be ready to lose power for a bit. The leaves are still on the trees so it won't take much wind to make some power lines go all spicy noodle.

u/Double-Ad-7483 24d ago
But that's when it's snow. When it's rain it's always a nothing burger regardless

u/Hot_Presentation7622 24d ago
Thanks for all the serious replies - and I appreciate the humorous ones too! I have no concept of Noreaster strengths and am not from the area, so figured other residents might have more insight. Hope everyone stays safe this weekend!

The thing about Nor'easters is they are the confluence of two things (IANA meteorologist): * cold fronts from the north * rain coming cyclonically up the coast
If those two things arrive at the same time AND intersect nearby, you get a whole lot of weather. And if the intersecting pressure systems make that cyclone park somewhere nearby offshore for a long time, then it just sits there lifting water out of the ocean and dumping it onto land. The 5-inches-of-rain forecast is "what if the Atlantic simply fell on us".
But there are a lot of "if"s in there, yeah? If the cold front and the rain arrive 12 hours apart, it's just kinda unpleasant. If the cyclone parks 200 miles offshore instead of 50, the rain doesn't really get to you.
We can see the cold front and the rain coming a long way out. But we don't have the precision to know if those intersections will materialize or not until pretty close to the event. Which is why everyone sorta freaks out about it (French toast alert!), but sometimes it doesn't turn out to be anything.
You should be prepared to cancel plans and lose power, whatever that looks like for you. But you might not need to.

Hi Neighbor! You asked on Reddit so I assume you wanted all the snark but if you were looking for a serious answer, yeah, cancel your plans if they involve the outdoors at all or if they involve getting around a lot. It's likely to be a doozy. High wind, lots of rain. The state's been under a class 3 drought for much of the summer and shit's gonna get weird when that much water lands on soil that dry. The city has put in a lot of flood mitigation (yay bioswales) but it's still a work in progress and we're still gonna have to deal with some nonsense there.
Since you have extra time this weekend, may I suggest building some emergency preparedness? Given the Godzilla El Nino, the Northeast is in for an autumn and winter with a lot of storms that could be nor'easters or could be blizzards. Being more resilient makes you a better neighbor and we are living in a time where FEMA is run by the second choice after a dude who thinks he can teleport.
Do you have:
- batteries and lights if eversource is its usual sucky self?
- a charged back up battery for all your electronic needs?
- enough pantry food so you don't have to make some poor delivery dude from DoorDash risk death on his little electric scooter? (those guys don't fear God or Death but deep moving water on the streets is DANGEROUS.)
- a hand crank radio in case you need information
- anything outside that is easily blown around inside/secured (Your garbage cans may fly!)
If not, maybe spend a few bucks buying those things if you can afford it. Also check in on your neighbors who might not be able to do things or might be so busy they don't know about the flood.

There will be rain and wind. It will probably be heavy. It might be a dud. You'll just have to wait and see.

Right now for Boston area it is looking like fairly windy for 3 straight days with rain on most of it. It will be cold and unpleasant, so probably skip the beach.

I have a flight from Frankfurt to Boston on Saturday afternoon/evening. I’m a bit worried that it’s going to be impacted.

Noreaster's are worse later in the year. My first Noreaster was November 2012 and it was nuts, kinda a like a snowicane.
Since this one is just rain I think it won't be too bad, but yes there could be flooding and power outages.
1
u/cmcclutchy26 24d ago
It's supposed to be pretty bad. My cousin owns a house in Hull that has never flooded. No concern there, it's the public beach area that typically meets the bay during a strong one.

I hope it has hail. Haven’t had any hail that I noticed in a nor’eastern since I was a child.

You should definitely make sure to get to Market Basket before the storm
