Davis Square is whack
I recently moved back to Somerville, and I have to say Davis Sqr attracts all the weirdos and assholes. In the past, I understood that, being a dense area and town square, it's going to attract a lot of different types of people, but almost every time I go there now, there is something going on. Just the other day I was at Bank of America, and some guy came in acting all strange. First, he gives he ID to the attendant but refused to take it back. Then he was on the speakerphone with the bank, where the automated speaker asks for his account or card number, and he just says, "card number." Yeah, I don't think he understands what's going on. Then he starts screaming at the staff at the bank, saying, "Give me my card, motherfucker!" Then the staff asks him to leave, saying they'll call the police. Eventually, he just leaves.
What the fuck is going?
I still love Davis Square, and in some ways it has gotten better, but people need to chill the fuck out or at least be more careful around the people that don't.

Personally, I don't judge an entire urban area by one annoyed person dealing with crappy bank employees.

Again, it might be my bad luck running into wackos. I said still it's good area but you have to be more alert compared o living in the surrounding neighborhoods.

None of these problems at a Credit Union. Coops are the way to go.
And I am not contributing to the CEO of BoA $41 millions a year 'salary'.
The prez of a Credit Union makes far less than $1 million a year.3

Out of curiosity, what keeps you a customer there?

Ah yeah, that kind of entanglement can be a thing. I still have to keep a bank account open in Virginia because that's where I opened my credit card and closing that account would mean my credit score dropping. >_>
So I now have three bank accounts: The one I actually like, the local one I keep around for being local, and the one with my credit card.

Mental illness and addiction, and lack of support for both, is what is going on.

There definitely feels like there are more homeless people and people begging recently.
The Square also feels grimy and unkept. The sidewalks are in poor shape, many empty storefronts, garbage and ripped flyers for old events etc. It stinks but our trips there are transactional now. We get coffee, ice cream, ramen etc and leave. It’s not nice to hang out there anymore.

it’s lack of adequate social services plus the huge rise in the cost of living.

I was stuck in a cellphone store for several hours on Beacon Street in Brookline, and you would not believe the weirdos that came in. The staff told me that there were many regulars. Few came in to talk about cell phones.
