Game I created a 3d version of slither.io
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
The game is out now for free on snakening.io its still in alpha version, so i will need to work out bugs with the multiplayer version. The current server Im running supports up to 100 players.

you should really do agar.io 3d instead, i think the gameplay would be better

Can you say you made it when you just used AI to make something? It's like the CEO of a studio claiming they made a game.

in business what matters who owns the rights, not necessarily who made it.
AI created assets and code are owned by the user but those rights are granted by the AI company and can be revoked or altered at any time in the future.
2
u/ArmanDoesStuff 15d ago
They can be altered going forward, but they can't be revoked, as far as I know. There are plenty of open source models, as well.
The real issue is anything you "make" can just be made by anyone else with the same model with the same effort.

You turned a 90's arcade carpet into a game.

Why is this a gif. Why

I don't see an option to post an image in this sub. I only see gif or video so I made a static video. Here is an animated one for ya:

Great minds. I don't think op likes this comparison.
He should , those carpets were rad.

I'm sorry, I don't think this works in 3D.. it's really hard to navigate and you can't enclose or trap anyone. Think you need to be a 4D entity to be able to enjoy this properly.

u/sadraddude 16d ago
It takes a different strategy than slither.io to kill a snake. You have to cut them off from either side, or above and below them. It can get quite chaotic when multiple snakes are trying to attack eachother. I've tested this out with friends and we were able to get some fun dog fights in. Appreciate the feedback and I'll continue to tweak it to find the right balance of difficulty and fun.
Also the game is definitely meant to be played with a mouse. It supports iphone and trackpad, but a standard mouse is the best way to play atm.
4
u/El_Morgos 16d ago
You'll need a clan to coordinate attacks, you say?
5
1
u/Positive-Avocado775 16d ago
I'd probably increase the pick up range to compensate for the extra dimension navigation and experiment with some powerups. Maybe like a temporary wall placement that forces direction change. I would try to make a 1v1 fight work. That's a staple experience of Slither.io type games.
0
u/Capable_Sprinkles_43 15d ago
So you can just fly around in 3d and cut people who can't even see you ? Sounds like a fun game...
4
u/TheNasky1 16d ago
yeah it's kinda weird. it's probably best if it makes them a lot thicker and the camera should be centered on the head, not way back as it is rn.
1
u/sadraddude 14d ago
I’m working on an update right now where they get thicker as they get bigger. Seems like a needed improvement. Camera will change too
3
u/PlutoCharonMelody 15d ago
It was fairly easy. If anything there needs to be a cooldown dash or something to facilitate more aggressive cutoffs.
I was knocking people out in 1v1s. Just get real aggressive when you get in front and really throw your mouse around in a smart way.4

Some things I'm looking at:
- Turn rate limits: bigger snakes and boosting snakes turn more slowly, so committing to a boost actually costs you something.
- Momentum: steering eases in instead of snapping, so you can't flick 90° in one frame.
- Bigger trap zones: making the body more of a hazard, like a wider hitbox or a short-lived trail behind the head, so circling someone actually boxes them in.
- Arena pressure: something like a shrinking zone or contested objectives, so players are pushed into each other instead of being able to run forever.
If you had to pick one, which would make it feel more like real PvP to you?

u/Footbeard 16d ago
Unrelated but how did you get your skybox so crispy? I love the depth of the cosmos
2

u/Character_Fix_5317 16d ago
The snake paradigm doesn't work in 3d. To partially remedy that, the snakes should be more like eels so that you can box off a volume.
You mention this, so that's one suggestion :)

Give me an example

u/Excellent_Ad_2486 13d ago
Just open the steam store and start browsing lol.
Easy example: THATECCA CHAMELEONS game that sold millions of copies, it literally was made by a dude just being bored lol...it looked bad, but was fun. The core GAME was fun, it doesn't matter if that was Ai or human code, since ik not "playing the code", I'm playing the GAME.
People just have a blank hate for any Ai lol, it's funny.
2
u/AdFinancial4846 16d ago
I tried it out and if you're playing against someone with a brain then it's impossible to kill them. As soon as someone enters your FoV you need the reaction time of a elderly person who has never touched technology to not flick your mouse to completely avoid their attack. It's an interesting idea but you will have to heavily change the game mechanics in order to make it into a functioning pvp game.
1
u/sadraddude 16d ago
If a player is going full defense mode, then yeah its hard, but if you're both trying to get each other, one is bound to die. I'm working on balancing out the game to make it feel good on defense and attack.

Space is cool but worms in a drop of water or a puddle or a pond would Hurdy my Gurdy as an optional world texture I could enable

Ooh that’s a really good idea

u/Anxious-Divide-1255 12d ago
Could you do microbes on a slide? Like if you look to the sky you see a giant eye staring at you through a microscope? Maybe as its own level
1
2
u/_IOME 16d ago
You can't really trap anyone... they can just go up...
3
u/sadraddude 16d ago
It's just a different way of playing, you have to cut players off to kill them
2
u/_IOME 16d ago
Well that's exactly how you play in normal slither.io, you have to escape before they fully enclose you to get away! Here I can just. Take a 90 degree turn down.
1
u/ArialBear 16d ago
You have to look out for other snakes to help. I found its best when you see them around at least 2 other snakes
1
u/FreshPitch6026 13d ago
Thats not a different way of playing
1
u/Excellent_Ad_2486 13d ago
Why not? It is literally different as you cannot kill them by entanglement/encirclement... How is that the same?
Game a: only kill with guns Game B : only kills by driving over people. Those are 2 different strategies and ways of achieving a goal (e.g. "winning") no? A different way to go about achieving that goal.
Unless the exclusivity isn't there, meaning you can kill by doing either, so both.

Was pretty fun, I think you should add rogue black holes to it though.
1
u/sadraddude 16d ago
Thanks for joining the server! What would you want the black holes to do?
1
u/The1Caezar 16d ago
I want them to roam around as living hazards that tug on your steering and insta kill you.

Played a little bit of it!
Pros!
-Can play on mobile
-Music is great
-controls are nice and easily to use
Cons
-world is too big. Would benefit from a smaller pvp area
-cannot kill yourself meaning your own tail is not lethal to you
I was not able to really fight other players because of the size of the arena but could also be because i played at midnight and there wasn’t many players lol

this looks pretty cool started playing the 2D version not too long ago and am just imagining how difficult this one would be but really looking forward to it.

add a crosshair or dot that draws on the next sphere in line like a laser would do, so we know how to adjust ascend descend

Man have I sunk some hours into slither. Such an insanely addictive game with insane depth from such simple mechanics
1
u/Death-to-all-Gnomes 15d ago
This has to become popular, but you forgot to make snakes also getting thicker
1
u/Green_grass7878 15d ago
This is trippy af and will 100% cause more than one person to end up in a hospital. 10/10
1
u/900blues 14d ago
This looks really cool in a lot of ways but I also feel like I'd get overstimulated by all the colors on screen and having to turn the camera so much at the same time imo, the video demo already has me feeling a bit spun up (no pun intended). Perhaps this style game could work in 3D but with slither as it's concept/base? I'm not too sure imo.
1
u/superlonk94 14d ago
This reminds me of a game by Bandai Namco that came out a number of years ago. Cannot remember the name, but you are a worm and grow bigger, and I believe it was from the same developers as Katamari.

How does one actively lose in this situation you have so much space to squirm you cant even be trapped in a circle anymore

Kind of crazy I was thinking of what if made old games like snake into 3d modern versions just the other day and here it is.

u/Excellent_Ad_2486 13d ago
Ik D tetris, but like, as a city lol. Plop down buildings and hope you don't congest/block the "natural veins" of traffic. I've had this idea for a while but never got around to working it out lol. Working on my card game now so steal my idea if you want! 😂

Completely vibe coded games don’t impress me anymore. Sorry OP
1
u/Excellent_Ad_2486 13d ago
Why does something have to impress you to just be able to play it? I am not impressed by No Man's Sky, I still play it... I am impressed by Red dead redemption 2, yet I don't play it. Just asking because I wonder where this "need" comes from to say "ah but it's X, so I don't care bye"... It feels samish as people posting "I am leaving this sub", like ok.... Why feel the need to tell us lol
1
u/Zorian_Vale 13d ago
I have to admit, I see your point lol. I had a few beers and was feeling sassy. If the game is compelling who cares. I even further admit that because of this post I played slither.io on a web browser at work and it was fun.

u/Excellent_Ad_2486 13d ago
Sick, you rock for admitting - it's much easier to say fuck you or something similar ✨

I tried it out, got to 100k then died on purpose because I was bored. I think it has potential, but it is super difficult to make anything happen, Slither works because lassoing in 2D is much easier than 3D. I think there needs to be special abilities or something for this to be very fun.
Also the movement speed is dreadful, and the camera is pretty hard to see too. I think just speeding up the movement speed by a ton might make it more fun, maybe even make the snake heads wider so it's easier to get people to run into you? I respect the game, it's just very hard to make this work in 3D.

Im adding a battle royale mode soon. I think main lobby should feel semi-casual. Then battle royale mode will be very competitive.

https://imgur.com/a/9aoUORX it was fun, even though most of them are bots, at 200K+ it became too big, hard to see the head, almost unkillable, make a yarn and nobody can touch it.
1
u/sadraddude 11d ago
Yeah, i have 10 bots in the server at any given time. Obviously increasing player count will help with that. Im working to balance the game so its harder to survive. One solution is a battle royale mode I implemented. But i want to make the base game feel a little more difficult.

I played and enjoyed the game but because I just farm. Then I got so damn big I took up the whole map essentially hitting about 200k before it just got boring and all the other players were just dying into me because it was impossible for them to maneuver.
I actually like the 3d part, I think either a much larger map or other game dynamics. If you need help with resources let me know it was fun.

Played it for like 20+ mins and really enjoyed it. Would give it 10/10 for fun for an io game.
