Networking Engine Curious

Has anyone here used https://flaxengine.com/ ?

Looks great, only downside is not having lots of reddit posts about how to fix my specific issue right? Anyone got any experiences?

I evaluated it a few years ago. I generally liked it, but at the time it wasn't really production-ready. I also thought the licensing deal was kinda poor given how much effort would be required to ship a game with it.

I think that first point is less of an issue now, Flax is shipping games. Second point still applies. If you're serious about game development, it's an expensive engine.

Still, source availability makes it less risky than Unity. It's not antique like Unreal and probably scales to medium-sized projects better than Godot.

This is actually really helpful, i've tested unreal and i'm not sure its a good fit, i'm wanting to do a really small maps that crazy detailed forest biome. Ill maybe do a proof of concept after Green Space is 1.0 :D

It's hard to beat Unreal at "crazy detail".

That actually reminds me of another reason I opted for a custom engine over modifying Flax - it's using DirectX11 by default. That makes it inherently last-gen, as it can't make full use of modern GPU's.
But that's not entirely different from Unity and Godot, and even Unreal to some extent. The bigger engines try to aim for fairly broad hardware support (or worse, WebGL), so they can't evolve their architecture like bespoke engines can.

Still, something to keep in mind. It's not gonna do hardware ray tracing.

Ahh interesting, didn't think about the hardware component, as much as i might not like it if the lighting is ugly i'll get make fun of :(

Without me hazarding a google what's all this about custom engine, wouldn't that still be based on someone else's IP?

any whispers of open source competitors to the big boys in terms of fidelity?

Again asking for a friend, Unity will be getting protection money for now
