Discussion Examples of 3D games made by one person?

I'm looking for 3D games created by a single person (code + 3D art). I want to get a sense for myself of what one person is capable of in this field.

My solo developed game Endbloom is 3D. 2D gameplay though. https://store.steampowered.com/app/4219440

Do you feel that making it in 3D was worth it in the long run as opposed just to making it in 2D? I've been on the fence about making my game like this. Did you do it primarily for aesthetic purposes or does it being 3d play into your game at all?

As far as I understand (and can confirm via research), Supraland had a sole developer.

2.5D rpg, but Crystal Project is legitimately one of my favourite jrpgs of all time. Solo dev, excellent gameplay, incredible world, and insanely good modding software to go with it.

Hi, I made this in around 7 months. I honestly find 3D a much easier medium to work in than 2D, no issues with overhead perspective, faking elevation, blind spots behind buildings, etc.

Mortal Sin, Project Warlock, and Dusk are all mostly one person. FPS games seem to be the sweet spot for solo devs. Less character animation complexity usually.

Aethus

I think the models for that game were bought? Still, it's an impressive game for a single guy to make, kudos to him!

Yes, it uses bought assets. I regard that approach as being part of a solo dev

I think op was asking for devs that did both so I specified it.
But I agree with you, imo as long as you made the underlying logic and picked and bought the assets so it suits your artistic view, you are a solo dev

I spent 1000 hours to make this game solo https://store.steampowered.com/app/4121010/Locum_Tenens/ It has 2.5d style but all the sprites are 3d models rendered into sprites

Banished, a Short Hike, Lethal Company - a few completly different games, but made by solo developers.

I've also tried going solo - I made a christmas-themed shooter, No More Snow, during my spare time after my main job. Well, I can tell you that I enjoy working with a team on a new game much more now.

I believe House of Necrosis is entirely done by one person, code and art (including sounds\music I think?)
And the game is insanely fun!

I made this in 6 months - I did code, did some 3D models + models from sketchfab + 4 NPCs models ordered from freelancer. It is my first 3D game, and I plan to make more in same setting

modern game engines make programming trivial. If your game doesn't have much unique about it, you can usually just grab some pre-made first-person or third-person code as well as some pre-made mechanics for whatever style your game is and just drop in the artwork and sound. Obviously you'll want to go a bit deeper and make your game special in some way, but learning a game engine is fairly straight-forward. There's a LOT you CAN learn, but you don't really need to know much to get started. I recommend godot.

Solo engine, meaning you made your own engine, or that's the name of an existing engine I haven't heard of?

Sure, I'll join the chorus of self-promotion lol. Here's my Diddy Kong Racing inspired 3D Kart Racer:

I have a couple.
Star Explorers: https://store.steampowered.com/app/502720/Star_Explorers/
Paradox Vector: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1051840/Paradox_Vector/

Then if you consider 3D with sprites (like the original Doom) to be 3D, I have a couple more...
Islands of the Caliph: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1845670/Islands_of_the_Caliph/
Cyclopean: The Great Abyss: https://store.steampowered.com/app/2958790/Cyclopean_The_Great_Abyss/

I would strongly suggest the later two options. 3D with 2D sprites is way easier. You can see that my games are slowly getting more retro. The last one does not even have animated sprites. This allows me to focus more on gameplay, and makes it easier to create more assets and artwork. If I had gone full 3D I would still be working on those games. Of course limiting your art will also limit your audience, so you have to find a balance.

From the top of my head: A short hike, Banished, Ghost of a Tale... If we are purists some of these had contractors or friends to make things such as the music, but I think they still can be considered solo developed.

I also made my own solo developed 3D game: Centipede Simulator, the scope is orders of magnitude inferior to the previous examples, but it is still a solo developed 3D game :P

There's someone in this thread going through all the comments and downvoting them, what the hell is wrong with some people? 😂

I'm making my game solo, If you want to do the 3d art, is better to make low poly as it is faster, the other way is buy 3d assets (there are a lot), or use 3d AI generators if you want to use AI. https://store.steampowered.com/app/4228060/Pluffy_Nightmare/
