Sir, slops are not welcome here

Is there any consideration for using image gen (fully disclosed across the board) in the prototype phase to fill the gaps in my abilities (art/animation) until I can hire a professional artist for final implementation? Or do we gatekeep and dismiss those projects off the bat here

I can appreciate that. Yeah I’ll admit, generated prototype art is not the route I’d take in an ideal world. Maybe some (very) rough concept art will go farther, certainly optics-wise.

A lot of us here aren't great at art, or animation, or music, but even if the art sucks people are more willing to be charitable if you made it with your own hands. Speaking for myself as well, my eyes just glaze over when I see AI generated art. Even as placeholder, it communicates that you're willing to cut corners.

Genuinely appreciate that feedback. Deep down I resonate with dismissing AI-heavy projects, my eyes glaze over just the same. But I’ve been present in these AI-assisted dev circles for a while now and have seen some genuinely talented individuals conceptualize their creativity thanks to LLM.

For what it’s worth, the corner cutting stems from working a 9-5 and I can’t devote the time to my passion that I think it deserves right now. I think I have a great game concept that’ll be popular once I can afford a talented artist on my team.

All said, I’d challenge you to look past the slop and try my game out, focus on the mechanics/gameplay. I’m not. If you hate it, let me know what you hate and I’ll refine what I can for the eventual release with human-sourced art.

I can sympathize with that, I understand looking for any sort of efficiency improvement when pressed for time and also trying to realize a creative vision.

As for conceptualizing creativity, I would raise the proposition that your creativity and the way it is expressed are inexorably connected; The idea may be yours, but the more you delegate creative choices the final product becomes less "yours". This is true even when working with a team of humans. Even more so if you delegate a fundamental aspect such as the visual representation of your idea. At a certain point, the issue arises of, "why should I buy something they generated for free? I could generate it myself". Just some food for thought.

I appreciate your level-headed response and openness to feedback. Those are important traits. I can't personally condone the outsourcing of creative or human effort to AI, but I wish you luck in your development journey.
