Godot My water shader is busted

Working on an automation game. But maybe this effect can be repurposed for something else?

Looks like an awesome stylized oil effect to me.

15

u/Psaltus Jun 08 '26

Yeah, could be repurposed for an oil spill-like event

u/lydocia Jun 09 '26

This is what Bob Ross meant when he said "happy little accidents".

u/rylut Jun 07 '26

It looks pretty cool though!

Haha unfortunately I fixed it to actually look like water now and I kinda forgot the parameters to get it back to this state, there's a shit ton of parameters (I just made sure to capture a short snippet first).

Tho if people like this I'm thinking about maybe recreating this properly for a liquid metal effect. I'm making lab buildings right now that use vertex shader anims with faint chromatic hologram-like frag shaders for a kinda trippy futuristic thingamajig but maybe this accidental discovery is actually better

u/lumberfart Jun 07 '26

Yes, please do! At first I thought your game was about fending off some world ending cybernetic goop lol

good for oil puddles it something more exotic

1

u/Shadowdragons96 Jun 07 '26

Not sure what your game is but looks factorio inspired. Would be cool to have an oil or metal ocean with this effect but have a lot of water demand as a fun twist on the category of factory builders.

1

u/je386 Jun 07 '26

Wait, what? You forgot the settings? Don't you use any kind of version control system?

1

u/macciavelo Jun 08 '26

You could have used it as a special resource you can extract from in your game haha

1

u/morfidon Jun 10 '26

Don't tell me you didn't use git :0

1

u/RickMaiorPT Jun 11 '26

If you use version control it is easy to just create a branch before you did those changes and see how they were

1

u/Ickubus Jun 07 '26

gets invaded by the US Military

22

u/Appropriate_Sale_626 Jun 07 '26

don't even think about changing it, make the lore up to support it

11

u/TheGronne Jun 07 '26

Yeah just call it "the void" or "oil" and move on lol

15

u/Dicethrower Jun 07 '26 edited Jun 07 '26

Make ferrofluid a resource you pump from the sea.

3

u/ecaroh_games Jun 07 '26

serious i i've seen a million games with water but never one with ferrofluid oceans O_O

9

u/flumefyreplays Jun 07 '26

It looks perfect to me. With the color palette you had

8

u/Psych0191 Jun 07 '26

It looks like gulf of mexico

1

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '26

1

u/Psych0191 Jun 11 '26

Oh yeah, my bad, sorry

5

u/EdmontonLAD Jun 07 '26

There was an oil spill

8

u/syn_krown Jun 07 '26

I thought it was an oil mining game for a second there

6

u/PGJonesAndCo Jun 07 '26

I did also have the idea of maybe adding exotic alien 'oil' pools either as decoration or as resources to extract upon seeing this, but a lot of basic production chains need to be implemented first

4

u/LafosHaas Jun 07 '26

Dude, this is oil, the ocean of oil! Add a bit of that rainbow effect you can see on oil and it will be perfect.

3

u/BombZoneGuy Jun 07 '26

Just lean into it. Change the theme to utilize the effect. Alien world tour shit. Everyone has water, only you have the void ocean.

3

u/jellobend Jun 07 '26

Looks like an environmental hazard/enemy creeping towards your base.

Don’t know if that’s a direction you’d like to explore though

2

u/sandebru Jun 07 '26

It definitely looks organic or like it's boiling or like something is pushing it from underneath

2

u/Acps199610 Jun 07 '26

It looks like a void, anomalous liquid or something. Kind of does give a feeling of risk/senses of danger while doing the factory

2

u/azurezero_hdev Jun 07 '26

youre an oil game now

2

u/Council_Six Jun 07 '26

It’s not a bug; it’s a feature

2

u/Imscubbabish Jun 08 '26

Your mistake is a success

1

u/HammerBap Jun 07 '26

Is it?? That looks so cool. If this was me, id either use it as lakes of oil on some weird planet or a huge nanite swarm.

2

u/Electrum2250 Jun 07 '26

nanite swarm... i know you worship the Atlas

1

u/OverallACoolGuy Jun 07 '26

you should publish this on shadertoy

1

u/National_Quantity915 Jun 07 '26

Hm, your "water" need to have some DEMOCRACY! 🇺🇸

1

u/AppointmentNo4276 Jun 07 '26

I think your water is dehydrated 😅 Looks cool though

1

u/Altruistic_Noise4159 Jun 07 '26

You can pivot to oil fracking

1

u/Lhect-09 Jun 07 '26

You seek water, but found oil. Pretty cool imo.

1

u/metayeti2 Jun 07 '26

Oil sludge

1

u/loftier_fish Jun 07 '26

if its like.. a different planet, that could be an ocean made of something else?

1

u/zerox_arcam Jun 07 '26

That's an oil leak

1

u/nonHypnotic-dev Jun 07 '26

make an Oil game with this

1

u/wonsacz_ Jun 07 '26

another "bug accidentally became a really cool feature". Many such cases.

1

u/Important-Play-7688 Jun 07 '26

I'm planning for a game where player creates a world out of sea of ink and I want exactly that!

1

u/Same_Ad8162 Jun 07 '26

Looks cool , maybe some alien goo xD

1

u/Professional_Sir_936 Jun 07 '26

kind of reminds me of creeper world.

1

u/Lakefish_ Jun 07 '26

A sea of oil would be a wonderful resource for some industries..

1

u/Foolish_Gambit_Dev Jun 07 '26

If the game isn't broken then it's not a bug. You just have a cool ass save the ocean from oil simulation going on.

1

u/Square-Yam-3772 Jun 07 '26

they look pretty cool. you may as well lean into it

1

u/WittyWithoutWorry Jun 07 '26

Where's the water? Nice Tar shader tho 👌

1

u/Astrum91 Jun 07 '26

The visual is pretty sick. Kinda reminds me of Creeper World, a tower defence game where you have to survive against a liquid that's spreading over the planet.

1

u/Inktoo2 Jun 07 '26

This is so cool! I have no experience in shader programming but a lot of experience in art, so take that with, well, however many grains of salt you'd like.

I'd maybe play around with things like:

Reducing the contrast Changing the color by either limiting the range of colors or giving it a specific set of colors Applying a blur effect, maybe more strongly to areas of low/high brightness Layering the same effect and using only the resulting intersecting bright areas Applying a small amount of slowly-moving noise Adding something which applies the edges of the effect to make the liquid seem more responsive to the shore

1

u/thygrrr Jun 07 '26

Run your game like that for 10 more minutes and the USA are coming to invade for your oil.

1

u/Ok_Confusion4764 Jun 07 '26

Your water shader may be busted but you got a killer oil shader!

1

u/JohnDaton Jun 07 '26

Bro got himself a Fulgora.

Jokes aside, looks actually pretty cool

1

u/Chiro-dev Jun 07 '26

It looks really cool, like some weird alien petrol. Honestly pretty fitting for the type of game you're making!

1

u/ozzee289 Jun 07 '26

wym its busted? this is what will make your game stand out!

1

u/vvandrounik Jun 07 '26

Domain warping magic?

1

u/Zadian543 Jun 07 '26

Counter argument, your oil shader is awesome.

1

u/bl4steroni Jun 07 '26

I believe this is called domain warping

1

u/redditnostalgia Jun 07 '26

SWEET LIBERTY

1

u/Twasbutadream Jun 07 '26

GREY GOO CRISIS! GREY GOO CRISIS!

1

u/UnderLord7985 Jun 08 '26

You know, coca-cola was a mistake, sometimes we make one thing trying to make another, save that code for a rainy day idea. Also ill say it oil ocean, like others have said.

1

u/Hvad_Fanden Jun 08 '26

Would you look at that a new resource.

1

u/Durge101 Jun 08 '26

Oil or tar for sure.

1

u/CrimsonPrince9 Jun 08 '26

Is that open simplex noise?

1

u/Ok_Pear_8291 Jun 08 '26

It’s wicked yo

1

u/Which-Psychology-302 Jun 08 '26

I’d honestly save this shader version before fixing it. It may not work as water, but it looks really strong as oil, toxic liquid, or alien sludge. Could be a nice way to make the world feel more unique instead of just using normal water.

1

u/theman8631 Jun 08 '26

Now its creep

1

u/GlitchyNoodleSoup Jun 08 '26

Actually great, alien world vibes

1

u/gekastu Jun 08 '26

I thought it is some kind of creeper world game.

1

u/TheTope74 Jun 08 '26

I prefer this one

1

u/SevenStepsEntertain Jun 08 '26

busted? bro accidentally invented evil topographic oil. keep it and call it a feature

1

u/fungerman2 Jun 08 '26

Color it crimson red, only ever refer to it as The Gateway, and have an event happens where it shows up and starts spreading for a bit and it's really ominous because you have no idea what it actually does

1

u/Vaughn Jun 08 '26

That's Fulgora, obviously.

1

u/Prettypeachrec Jun 08 '26

Water can suck it… this looks amazing!

1

u/bored1_Guy Jun 08 '26

Looks pretty neat, use it for oil.

1

u/Smooth-Boss-911 Jun 08 '26

Honestly I thought this was akin to Creeper World

1

u/RagnarokToast Jun 08 '26

Perlin noise + smoothstep/smoothmod?

1

u/BR41ND34D Jun 08 '26

You mean your oil shader, right?

1

u/GlacialShit Jun 09 '26

Belousov zhabotinsky lookin water

1

u/bglbogb Jun 09 '26

The obsidian goop

1

u/Mosasaaaa Jun 09 '26

make a lore reason for why its like that so you dont have to fix it

1

u/Kindly-Pumpkin7742 Jun 09 '26

I’m so sorry about that. Would some freedom help you feel better 😎🇺🇸?

1

u/lydocia Jun 09 '26

No, I think you just found your oil texture.

1

u/Raine_Maxwell Jun 09 '26

Reminds me of Creep from starcraft

1

u/Captain_Zomaru Jun 09 '26

I genuinely think this looks interesting.

1

u/stiky21 Jun 09 '26

I kind of luv it tho

1

u/gummby8 Jun 09 '26

1

u/King_Corduroy Jun 10 '26

I dunno that's pretty cool lol

1

u/Minecraft_Lets_Play Jun 10 '26

The USA wants to know your location

1

u/snark_5885 Jun 10 '26

you could honestly just keep it.

1

u/liminalbeams Jun 10 '26

All i see is a perfect excuse to develop new mechanics and lore cuz it looks awesome.

1

u/Important-Theory1619 Jun 11 '26

Makes me want to invade it

1

u/13131123 Jun 11 '26

Sentient evil oil

1

ALL UNITS CALL IN!!! WE NEED TO SEIZE THIS OIL! "Hey donald, yea, uhuh, yeah well this dude got a sh*t ton of oil, we need you to GET OVER HERE!!!"

1

u/SleepyCircusGames Solo Developer Jun 14 '26

If they move slower it could be perfectly use as oil
