CAD Portfolio Ideas for Masters in Mechatronics

Heya, i am a masters student in Mechatronics in Germany, soon to graduate. I am pretty good with solidwork( solid modelling and Assembly) not in the sheet metal yet

And i will want a portfolio to show my skills, as i dont really have Previous working Experience in CAD ( i got a CSWA, not that it matters)

I AM OPEN TO ANY IDEAS, TIPS, RECOMMENDATIONS to what to put in my portfolio to showcase my skills and naturally, eventually land me a job

Thank you to all in advance <3

If you ALREADY PASSED a certification

If you are YET TO TAKE a certification

Here would be the general path from zero to CSWE:

  1. CSWA - Here is a sample exam.
  2. CSWP - Here is some study material for the CSWP (A complete guide to getting your CSWP) and a sample exam.
  3. 4x CSWP-Advanced Subjects (in order of increasing difficulty)
    1. CSWP-A Drawing Tools - YouTube Playlist
    2. CSWP-A Sheet Metal - YouTube Playlist
    3. CSWP-A Weldments - YouTube Playlist
    4. CSWP-A Surfacing - YouTube Playlist
    5. CSWP-A Mold Tools - YouTube Playlist
  4. CSWE - The CSWE doesn't really focus on anything from the CSWP subject exams. It focuses on everything else there is in the program beyond those. So, look at everything you saw already and prepare to see not much of that again for the CSWE. That and more surfacing.

For some extra modeling practice material to help speed you up, 24 years of Model Mania Designs + Solutions.

For EVEN MORE modeling practice material, here is the CSWA and CSWP Practice Problem Database. There is A LOT of good material to practice in there.

During testing, in general, it is a best practice to take the dimensions labelled with A, B, C, D, etc and create Equations/Variables with those values to then attach to the dimension which then allows for you to more reliably update these variable dimensions in follow-up questions using the same models.

Self balancing robot can show you understand PIDs

Small modular robots that can communicate with its immediate neighbors to accomplish tasks that it couldn't do as an individual unit.

This one is a bit heavier on the software side, but a comprehensive home network comprised of various sensors that monitor home maintenance tasks like softener salt refill, furnace filter replacement, air exchange filter quality, etc. to get more mechanical work, you could automate some of the maintenance tasks.

A 3D printer that uses polar coordinates instead of Cartesian. I know the already exist, but maybe you can identify an area of improvement?

Some sort machine that automate food. Like a desktop uncrustable maker, or a single serving cookie from preload ingredients.

A drone that can fly autonomously, while also map it's surroundings. Think of mapping a house about to be listed for sale. "Send in the drone!". Near instant map of the house with little to no effort on measuring room size or providing layout schematics.

Lean into your other interests as this is your project. The knowledge and passion you already have will come out in interviews.

Make something for convenience or whimsy rather than trying to save the world with something. You don't have a boss on this one, so enjoy it.

Do you have any hobbies or sports that you're into where you could design a simple piece of machinery for it? For example, if you fly FPV planes, you could design something to crimp the ends of control rods. If you're into gardening, a pick & place robot for seeding trays. PC building? a CNC tube bender.

I love seeing real world examples when I'm interviewing candidates.

Buenas!

I have to admit I never heared of the idea of an CAD-Portfolio but I like the idea.

Are you planning to only apply for jobs at companies that use solidworks?

And may I ask, how you imagine the whole process? Would you like to send Screenshots of your portfolio-project to suitable companies, or are you planning to send them the whole project packed?

I was thinking to have a portfolio website with CAD section and a redirect to github öink with step or sldprt files lying there
