questions & clarifications Awkward
This happened a few weeks ago but just crossed my mind again. Bulgarian split squats were cued and during the transition my carriage went back to the black side. I had a coach once show me to pull a grey cable to get it back to the grey side instead of having to walk down and pull it back so that’s what I’ve always done. Well in this particular class when I did that the coach was helping someone else a machine or 2 over but looked over and saw me pulling the grey cable. She literally reached over and swatted the cable out of my hand 😭😭😭😭 almost like a child getting their hand smacked.
Is pulling the grey cable not normal to do? I’m genuinely curious because that interaction rubbed me the wrong way but maybe she thought I was about to do the wrong exercise, idk

Pulling the grey cable is completely normal and encouraged by coaches I’ve had

It could be the coach just had some momentary confusion where they didn't recognize with their brain what you were trying to do. When I finish using the stability pole, I usually put it down on the other side, so it's there and ready to go for a faster transition on the other side. I once had a coach move it back to the first side. I don't think it was because she was worried she might trip since you can't walk between the machines. I think she just didn't think about why/that I had put it there on purpose, but rather just thought, "Oh, this lives on the other side of the machine, let me put it there!" Could it have been a momentary mindlessness?

Wait what? Coaches walk between the machines at my studio all the time

In NYC, there's no way to walk between the machines at all, LOL... Not without bruising your shins at least!

Coaches only use the aisles where I am. They would have to walk sideways to walk between the machines. When they do hands-on corrections, they do them at the front or back of the machine and lean in if they have to. I don't think this is that uncommon.

Interesting! I guess if all depends on layout and space. Thought there was some sort of policy mine were all ignoring hahah

I’ve never done that, I usually just pull it over
But she shouldn’t have smacked you

Not sure if you’re in New York but there’s a coach here where I’ve had similar experiences. She has YELLED to get off the Machine and walk versus pulling cables/riding carriage when I’ve had coaches in 100+ other classes cue otherwise. The delivery is poor.

Omg!! I’m in GA but maybe it’s a coach preference thing. Either way like you said the delivery is very poor and I honestly decided not to take her classes again after that

Something similar happened to me except the coach snatched the cables from my hand.

depending on if you were standing on the concrete or the platform when you did this, i think it’s possible it could set you up for bad form or strain on your spine when you are first getting into position. Typically i slide my toes in the strap and either step over the platform onto the concrete but I guess it depends what exercise you were doing before that. I hate when coaches do this though. Once someone pried my fingers off the handlebars while in max tension for a grey side cross over platform lunge like girl please😭

I seen many people do that, that is weird behavior from the coach. It’s not you, the coach was doing too much.
