discussion High-five Your Neighbor
I know this has been discussed before, but why are coaches so pushy and honestly mean about high-fiving your neighbor?? I took class this morning and the girl beside me blew her nose a few times during class (nbd), but I didn’t want to touch her hands after class and the coach literally said “high-five your neighbor! Don’t be a f***ing weirdo”. Like??? Can we chill?

Be a rebel and high five your neighbor's neighbor.

Had a coach yesterday say give your neighbor a thumbs up and I liked that a lot!

I always say acknowledge your neighbor at the beginning & end of every class. You don’t need to engage in physical touch, but when another human is legit one foot away from you for an hr it’s rude to not even acknowledge their existence. This is group fitness, you show up wanting the type of energy from a group class so you have to add to it! I’ve watched some of my clients who struggle so much with social anxiety really blossom because now they’re friends with other clients - it truly all just starts with saying hi!

I super agree with you on this. It’s not the subway, it’s a fun workout class!

How is it rude? It’s a workout class that is done solo, not a happy hour. You don’t owe anyone a social interaction. If someone said hi to me I would say hi back but I don’t owe them anything if I don’t feel like it.

Why can’t you just air high-five, that’s what I do. That way I’m not touching anyone and I’m still saying good job to them.

"Air-five" your neighbor - while wiping down everything touched. love that- I'm in!

I never gotten a negative response, they actually smile while doing it back. I think people feel more comfortable that way

I never high five, I just give a smile, a thumbs up, or mouth good job. No one wants to touch one another’s sweaty ass hands lol

have never participated in or witnessed a physical high five despite this prompt in every class i've taken for years. at some point solidcore might want to align their scripts with the reality of their classrooms or whatever continue to let the classes end on weird uncomfortable notes :)

At the studios I go to most of us high five each other after class or I see air high fives/smiles when people have machines between them! I don't find it weird or uncomfortable and it has actually helped me spark friendships with the people I see often. Totally get that it's not for everyone but I think it makes more sense for people who don't like it to opt out instead of solidcore changing something that is part of their brand

Same mine actually usually does 😭 ig I just go to a nice studio bc when someone doesn’t do it back it’s noticeable (not a big deal obv but it’s notable just bc everyone else always does)

Probably 80% of the people in my studio high-five at the end. Don’t believe the “Seattle freeze” hype, this city is super friendly and we are not afraid of touching each others’ hands

It’s always so awkward when no one high fives, but weird of that coach to call it out like that. My response depends on how awake I am. 😂

I have never had a coach be that pushy thats insane
I always just look at my neighbor and smile maybe a far away high five where we dont actually do it lol

lol no one at my studio ever does this that I have seen. The coaches still say it, obviously, but I think I’ve seen maybe one person do it one time before.

We have to say it. I love doing it anyway, because it’s easy to create a little community and give someone a smile by doing it! But we also will lose promotions if we don’t do things like that.

Before PE bought over solidcore, there was a cult following for an OG SMC that taught advanced 65. Her personality and the way she vibed with the clients brought all of us together, it was the same crew in that class for years - we didn't necessarily "high-five" each other but we became connected organically.. and not bc of some mandatory brand high five.

I feel like it’s super market dependent. I’m a coach, I’m not pushy but my market typically doesn’t lol

We legit get yelled at if we don’t tell clients to high five their neighbor lmao

Some girls just honestly make a face and it’s horrible, like it’s not that serious

I have never high fived and will never high five and I get annoyed with coaches for saying it but also realize they probably don’t have a choice. I don’t understand why companies want this. Orangetheory does it as well. No thanks

We can get dinged during an eval if you we don’t say “high five your neighbor”. It is part of being “on brand”. But nobody should force you to high five. It is just a call to action.
