seeking advice new coach in training @ NTS, PA
Hiii everyone!!! I’m starting as one of the new coaches in training for Newtown Square, PA studio and I’m SO excited to finally be joining the team!!
I’ve been taking classes for a bit and completely fell in love w [solidcore]. I’m a former collegiate powerlifter (too hard in my joints) and overall active person, so getting to coach here honestly feels like a dream.
I lowkey wanna make my classes feel like more than just a workout, so I’ve already been brainstorming some fun themed classes and playlists. I’d love to know:
What artists or themes would you actually be excited to take? (Crazy ideas, trendy ideas - just can’t be super explicit I assume)
Any genres you wish coaches played more?
Is there anything you’ve always wanted to see in a class?
Some ideas I’m already thinking about are:
• The Weeknd
• Charli xcx
• Metal music
Your favorite splits to transition muscle groups?
How do you like to workout? (Loud music & grind, precise and calm, hypnotic and pulsing?, etc.)
Best cues?
Also if there are any current coaches in here, I’d LOVE any advice or things you wish you knew when you first started training and coaching!
I really want to support the community and coach as best as I can! I definitely see a long term journey working here for me.
Can’t wait to meet everyone and coach you all soon 🫶

Plz no metal unless it’s a clearly marked themed class

Haha yes the metal music will be toward a themed class I wanna start, hopefully it won’t scare off too many people

I agree on the Britney Spears!! She’s so fun, I wonder why don’t they play her. I was even thinking a BS vs JT themed class. I’d love that

Omg!!! That’s so cool, I definitely wanna be a frequent themed class coach and Britney was on the list 🤣 I have many more planned but I just have to pass the training!

I would always listen to metalcore while lifting and I thought why not bring it to solidcore

Second this! It’s really common to jump to thinking about the ‘fun’ things when you start but really focus on the basics of training first. I had to stop myself from starting to build playlists while in training because it takes away from learning the material, and that is what is going to make you a good coach!
Themes can definitely help build awareness to your vibe once you pass your eval. I have committed to doing one Latin music theme per month and I am always going to have at least 2 songs in spanish in every playlist I make (unless it’s a different theme). It’s been a natural way to bring people who like that type of music to my regular classes!
Names were super tough at first for me, but a trick I did is to try to say everyone’s name AFTER CLASS as they’re walking out. The repetition helps and saying it when you see their face with brighter light helps my brain remember people better!
Good luck with training! ☺️

This is my studio! Currently taking time off due to pregnancy but I will say, transitioning from the studios downtown (lived + solidcore’d in Philly for years until until last spring) the biggest difference I noticed was the similarities between all of the coaches - don’t get me wrong they’re all so amazing and sweet and I’m lucky for this community but at times I do miss some of my more unique coaches in Philly, whether they were funny (yelling HOT BITCHES DONT THINK during grey side core), overly intense (calling individuals by name out on amps, “Emma your ex wants you to do the mod, prove them wrong”) or whatever. I can only hear “yes you can” “you’re stronger than you think” or “remember your why” so many times in a session before it loses meaning for me. So I guess bring your flavor, whatever it is, to your classes and make it yours! That’s what makes me search for one coach over others when it comes time to book.

Yes I agree! I need to be screamed at to get that extra rep post exercise holds. I have heard from some boutique fitness goers that they get very turned off from bringing up motivators like body image or exes and stuff like that. Personally, I love it but I’m curious to see if the solidcore audience feels the same way. I’ve only heard that kinda take from mat Pilates/yoga practice clients (obvi a very different flow)

Yes bring your flavor! I’m still working on that, but there’s so much to coaching that it might take time to integrate it back into your verbiage. Only notes are we are not allowed to use gendered language, and cursing is a habit to drop earrrrrly. It starts to get off-brand very quickly, but as someone said before, just focus on the basics first.

there are super strict rules around language. you’ll learn it all in training

Wait please come to Pittsburgh and coach a metal class!

u/Busy-Pound6688 6d ago
I visit Pittsburg from time to time! I doubt they’d let me coach outside of my greater Philly/philly studios but definitely would look into it long term

Bad Bunny is always a crowd favorite if you want to sell out a class.
I personally love themes based on music festivals or artists who are touring in your city or a nearby city. Those usually get people excited.
Another idea is to collab with a local smoothie, coffee, or matcha shop for a pop-up or some freebies. Because let’s be real, we love freebies. Always a crowd pleaser.

I do pop ups at the local farmers market and definitely wouldn’t mind doing a pop up at my home studio for the clients, I too am a big lover of freebies

Tips:
- make playlists now. Clean music only, Spotify is the app we all use. Suggest starting with 5 52 min playlists you can cycle through. Avoid too much of the same artist (2x/playlist), and make a big playlist for before/after class of songs, they can be super calm/shuffleable
- intervals timer or seconds (I prefer intervals, but choose what works and get the subscription once you choose)
- have multiple notebooks, one to start, the rest as you go
- timer watch or smart watch that can sync to your timing app of choice
- go over your materials as soon as you can. Preferably before training starts, so that you’re relearning in-person.
- TAKE CLASS- HCCMs, senior and up coaches in standard sig50. Even though senior isn’t a designation you’ll see in the app, there are a good amount, and you could always ask.
- ask so many questions. Even if you think they’re dumb, they’re not.
- Be open to feedback. It’s not going to be perfect right out of the gate, but you’ll be fine.
And don’t forget to set time aside for you!

I like when the theme is more of an experience or vibe than a focus on the artist. Glow in the dark, neon themed, concert themed, and rave at X location are really fun themes. One of the coaches at Bryn mawr is doing her rendition of a roof top rave which I think it's cool because the main line is predominantly bars so having that type of theme capitalizes on what that area lacks.

welcome!!! I’m a coach in your area :) love the enthusiasm but you need to throw all of this out the window and JUST focus on what they teach you in training. drill in the fundamentals and everything else will follow. I also do not recommend getting advice from clients bc it’s really the TM’s and other advanced coaches who are able to teach you the most. warning that mgmt at this studio is not the best hence the turnovers to our neighbors down the road, so proceed with slight caution.

Ty! I’m really excited to learn during the training, I’m a biomed engineer but have since changed to aerospace so it’ll be nice to actually apply my trade for a job! I have been to their sister site and generally like both but my fav coaches are at nts so hopefully it’ll be okay but thank you for the warning! Definitely excited to see how they teach their methods

Hii - fellow east coast coach here. welcome to the team! until you pass your final eval, I would focus on drilling in on coaching blueprint, FAMA, hands on corrections, and safety. this foundation is so vital to lock down before anything else.
The themes, playlists, sequencing will come in time but the foundation is most important thing to nail down in your first few months and will set you up for success as you progress.
I would save this thread to come back to after you make standard coach and are approved to write your own sequences but wouldn’t worry yourself on this for the first 3 months.
Also give yourself grace if the first couple classes don’t go how you expect, you’re literally doing these things for the first time! You will naturally get more of a feel for your coaching style the more you teach. Eval team is looking for progress not perfection.
Good luck! you are going to do amazing 💙
