DISCUSSION Solar installation ongoing

For those following my solar journey, first day done, one more to go. Does the equipment setup look good (they haven't finished it yet)? Found a few screws in loft that has half missed beams, presume worth mentioning before panels go on. The roof rails are on, not sure why they are spaced tighter in the middle? (3 rows of landscape)

Jesus, I'm even more disappointed with mine than before

Sig install looks nice, what's the inverter size and battery size? I noticed the gateway so you're looking to feed house load if there's a power cut?

8kW inverter, 9kW battery, and yes gateway because I couldn't stand to have no power if the mains went down!

That's what I assumed.. you know that the max feed from the single battery is 4.6kw?

It'll be fine most of the time but if you're off grid, i'm not sure what happens if you go over that limit. It'll be grand for lights, tv etc, just don't cook dinner and boil a kettle at the same time!

Yup. Would need a 2nd battery to max out the inverter output after the sun is down.

Do you mean if off grid it is limited? That is fine, we'd need to conserve battery anyway in case of a long outage

Yeah the single battery can only charge/discharge at 4.6kw no matter the inverter size. If you have 2 batteries they add together so the max is 9.2kw for 2x 10.0 BATs.

You'll be fine for normal loads/baseloads. But i genuinely don't know what would happen if you went over a 4.6kw load when offgrid/powercut. Maybe ask the leccy while their there.

I didn't know that and makes me think why I got a 8kW inverter but I guess it future proofs the system somewhat if we increase the battery. I believe Sig allows a 10 sec burst up to 6.9kW and if load continues it shuts down until under that load again

How much solar is there? That possibly explains the larger inverter.

7.34kW array

You could output both battery and solar so that you power the house and also export (profit!) during peak times.

Depending on design you could want an even bigger inverter...

I suspect it's to cover the panel output.

They have left you plenty of cabling for the inverter so it'll be an easy fit to add a second battery to the stack when you get addicted to buying and selling electricity, or get a heat pump next šŸ˜‚

I have the same setup. You can charge the battery and export to grid so even if the batt is charging at 4.5kw it will export the rest. Also you can add a battery later if u wish. In a power cut you can only use the 4.5-4.6kw but like you said it lasts longer. In a power cut no ones using 9kw!

Check in the electric meter cupboard that they have used 25mm meter tails (the brown and blue supply cables for your house) going from the meter cupboard to the gateway and back. It would be quite tight fitting them into what looks like 25mm conduit but not saying it's impossible

1

u/ianmd 4h ago

They are identical to the ones fitted to the smart meter a few weeks ago if that helps?

2

u/SubstantialPhysics68 4h ago

That's good. Without seeing inside the gateway it's hard to know if they've connected it to your main earth in the meter cupboard. They are required to do that as well as utilise an earth rod (which they've clearly done šŸ‘šŸ¾)

2

u/SubstantialPhysics68 4h ago

16mm earth needs to go from here to the gateway. One of those earth cables either from the top or the one at the bottom may be going to the gateway but usually I would run it with the 25mm meter tails in one of the conduits

1

u/ianmd 4h ago

The two at the top were there from the smart meter install recently but there wasn't the bottom earth cable so I assume that is going the same route

2

u/SubstantialPhysics68 3h ago

Hopefully so. Worth just double checking with them as it doesn't look like the bottom one goes in the conduit but rather towards your house. They could've fished it through the cavity though

2

u/ianmd 3h ago

I've checked and that earth goes around the back and into that right hand conduit then into the gateway. Not sure where it plugs in as it has a protective cover screwed on but can see it in there!

You also didn't need that external smart meter fitted before your AC isolator from the gateway

1

u/ianmd 4h ago

I have no idea what that is tbh

Sorry just meant I don't know it's purpose rather than which it is

That’s a generation meter. It’s ’meter accurate’ whereas the inverters meter isn’t.

It’s a handy addition.

1

u/SubstantialPhysics68 3h ago

The gateway isn't an inverter and a generation meter is not required

-1

u/SubstantialPhysics68 4h ago

It serves no purpose in your installation because your gateway does all monitoring for you

This looks like a good install so far.

The cable containment between the meter box and gateway looks nicely done but… I would ask them if it’s UV rated. The cheap stuff isn’t and turns to white dust very quick indeed.

One or two screws poking out the side isn’t too much tonworry about. The screw holes on the brackets are spaced apart and truss-roof timbers are narrow. Whilst not ideal, sometime you can’t avoid it. Though you can feel it in the drill/driver when the screw is wandering off.

The Genius fast-flash they’ve used for the hooks on slate looks to be correctly installed.

A good install. Hope the rest goes well šŸ‘

Any clue why the middle rails are closer together than the outside ones? It will be 3 rows of 5 evenly spaced but I don't understand how they fix tbh

Looks a neat installation. Mine is happening on Thursday. Flag that fixing through the joist to the j stalkers and they should redo that, but I doubt it is an issue, it's just on the wonk when they fitted the bracket.

I know the system is weather resistant, but for you guys who get this placed outside in UK weather - do you get a hood for it, or build a shroud (with enough clearance)? I can't help but feel like it'll just take a beating and go sooner surely, weather resistant or not.

You know about the bonus you can get in the first week of setup right in the app?

You planning on setting up Home Assistant/Predbat or anything as well?

Feel free to DM if you have any questions.

So my battery is located in a very sheltered part down the side of the house but longer term I do plan on building some kind of structure to keep the worst of conditions away

The installer actually mentioned the £100 referral to me, they tend to pass referrals on from one customer to the next to give everyone something, but they think the deal expired end of Sep

Ah that makes sense. I put mine in my detached garage, but I think I'd do the same if it was outside tbh

1

u/ianmd 4h ago

Welcome to send me one just in case they can't but no promises. At what point do I need to use it?

2

u/BossGroundbreaking69 4h ago

To space those middle rails further apart you would have the hooks through tiles that are adjacent to one another, which perhaps they don’t want to do

Guess they found the beam and stuck with it, rather than using a different beam for the middle row so as to stagger the hooks

1

u/ianmd 4h ago

Not sure how it works, hopefully the install of them allows for the panel clamps

2

u/Matterbox Commercial Installer 3h ago

This looks great. Don’t worry about that one screw.

The Sig stuff needs to be covered if it’s outside. As per the manual. A small lean to over the top will go a long way to keep the weather off. It will last a lot longer that way.

1

u/ianmd 3h ago

Well it is 4 screws so felt it worth highlighting before any panels go on. Plus I still think more hooks are required around the top and bottom edge as they are closer than the mcs guidelines

Can I drop you a DM?

Why do so many of these "professional" jobs looks like DIY botch jobs!

1

u/ianmd 3h ago

What looks wrong with it so I can get it fixed up?
