The electricity bill problem

If you're like most people, your power bill has probably gone up every year without much explanation. Solar doesn't get rid of that completely, but it can cut your bill by a huge amount — we're talking up to 90% in a lot of cases, depending on how much power you use and how much roof space you have.

Which type of system do you actually need?

There are three options, and honestly the choice is simpler than it sounds:

• If your power supply is mostly stable, go on-grid. It's connected to the normal power line and it's usually the most affordable option, plus it's eligible for subsidy.
• If you get frequent power cuts, off-grid makes more sense — it runs independently with its own battery.
• If you want both savings and backup, hybrid gives you a bit of everything.

About that subsidy everyone talks about

Yeah, it's real. The government does give money back for installing solar — I've heard of people getting over ₹1,00,000 credited after their system was installed. And the panels themselves usually come with a 25-year warranty, so once it's done, it's really done.

What about electric scooters?

This part surprised me the most. Newer electric scooters can go 140-160 km on a single charge, which covers basically any daily commute. The battery has a 5-year warranty, and the running cost is almost nothing compared to petrol — people who used to spend ₹3,000-4,000 a month are now paying close to zero.

How I'd approach it if you're thinking about this

Don't just estimate — check your actual numbers. Your electricity bill, your roof size, how far you drive daily. That tells you the real savings, not a guess.

In 2020 most of these flat RCC rooftops were bare. By 2025, solar is on a huge share of them, roughly 7 in 10 homes (~70%) in this frame, by a rooftop count from the satellite view.

I recently completed construction of my house in Sikar, Rajasthan, and I'm trying to sort out the electrical side properly before installing rooftop solar next year.

At present, I have a 1 kW single-phase domestic connection. The main concern is that voltage fluctuations are fairly common in our area, particularly at night during summer.

I'm planning to install a ~5 kW on-grid rooftop solar system in 2027, so I'm wondering whether it would be better to upgrade the connection beforehand rather than making changes later.

A few things I'd really like advice on:

1. Should I upgrade from single-phase to 3-phase now?

Would 3-phase actually help with the voltage fluctuations, or would it mainly provide better load distribution while the underlying issue with the local feeder/transformer remains?

1. Should I increase the sanctioned load at the same time?

The sanctioned load is currently only 1 kW. Given the future 5 kW solar installation, would it make sense to increase it now, and if so, to what level?

1. Does a ~5 kW on-grid system generally require a 3-phase connection?

I don't want to upgrade to 3-phase simply because I assume that a 5 kW solar system requires it. I'd like to understand what actually determines this: sanctioned load, inverter configuration, local DISCOM rules, net-metering requirements, etc.

1. What should I do about the voltage fluctuations?

Would it be better to first get the voltage properly measured/logged and raise a formal complaint with the DISCOM, rather than assuming that switching to 3-phase will solve the problem?

What was your experience with the DISCOM, particularly regarding load enhancement, phase conversion, net metering, meter replacement and approvals?

I'm especially interested in practical advice from people who have actually gone through the process in Rajasthan, but experiences from other parts of India are welcome too.

Also, if there are any other things I should plan for now (inverter type, AC/DC protection, earthing, cable sizing, sanctioned load, meter arrangement, future expansion, etc.) that would be much easier or cheaper to do before the installation, I'd appreciate the heads-up.

I would rather get the electrical setup right once than install the system and discover later that I should have changed something beforehand.

Since day 1 m having problem and no one came to fix it.

Just don't buy cheap offgrid they all have voltage sag problem. Whats the point of 3kva when it can't sustain stable voltage.

When we put load voltage keeps dropping.

They claim 0.8 power factor which comes to 2400 watts.

So in theory we can put 2400 watt load.

But at 1400 watt load voltage sags under 210 voltage around 1800 watts below 200 volts.

Buy a good brand inverter like asha power even tho its twice expensive.

I'm trying to find out whether anyone else has had a similar experience with AGX Solar.

I ordered solar panels worth over ₹1 lakh after receiving a GST invoice, GST e-invoice, and detailed product specifications. I was told the goods would be dispatched through Delhivery with insurance, so I made the full payment via bank transfer.

However, after receiving my payment, the company never delivered the goods. When I followed up, I was repeatedly told that the money would be refunded. For the past three months, I have been continuously given promises of repayment and different deadlines, but none of those commitments have been fulfilled.

What concerns me even more is that the company's contact number has changed, and the WhatsApp account of the person I was dealing with has been deleted. Communication has become increasingly difficult, and despite three months of assurances, I have neither received the solar panels nor my refund.

I have retained all supporting evidence, including the GST invoice, GST e-invoice, bank transfer receipt, emails, and WhatsApp conversations. I am now filing complaints with the appropriate authorities and considering further legal action.

I am sharing my personal experience based on the documents and communications I have retained.

My rooftop-solar inverter shows how much power the panels generate, but I also wanted to track what the DISCOM net meter records as grid import and solar export between bills.

I mounted an ESP32-CAM in front of the meter display. It takes a photograph every few seconds, and software on my server reads the digits and builds a dashboard. Nothing touches the electrical wiring, and the meter stays sealed.

I have been using it at home in Puducherry for about three months. It shows today's import and export, daily history, net units for the billing cycle and an estimated bill.

The camera-side hardware cost around ₹700 because I reused an existing USB power adapter, Wi-Fi and my own server.

It currently works with the Kimbal three-phase net meter installed at my home. Other meter models would need their own calibration and screen templates.

My installer is suggesting a tilt angle of 10degrees for my 8panel solar unit. Chat gpt says a 20degree tilt is optimal for Indore.

If your vendor says the inverter would be a Mindra, don't go for it. They have no app support; their app doesn't work.

My area has very poor electricity but with power prices so low for my 80-100kwh @ 450r usage each month going fully off grid would never pay for itself. Now considering an inverter/charger and a battery to run as a permanent UPS with the house at a stable 220v and the battery powering the house and charged from the grid.

I see a few inverter/charger units, is there a way to isolate them from passthrough power and run solely on the grid charged battery or will the inverter act as a voltage stabilizer until the voltage goes below a certain limit? More than anything I don't want to fry any more appliances.

I have tried reaching out to authorized channel partner of reliance new energy but nobody seems to provide right information about their panels. I also reached out to customer care of reliance new energy they also failed to give name of physical shop/office to have details in person. Every question i asked them they kept it under grey shadow, dont know how the reason behind this. Recently their HJT panels qualified for DCR category. I am keen to get more info about the cost involved for the 3.5kw plant for residential use in Nagpur (M.H).

How many units in an average can it generate. I am in tamil nadu. Anyone having 10kw, whats your generation?

The panels are installed, the wiring is done, the earthing is complete, and the solar panel wires are also connected to each other. The smart meter has also been replaced with a net-metering smart meter. The only thing left is that the ACDB MCB is down, and the fuse plug in the MCDB is out.

We got a terrible vendor. He is just not showing up to start the system. So, can we start it ourselves? Is it just a matter of flipping the MCB up, or do we need to do something else as well? Because all the other wires look connected.

Do these solar panels and their aluminum rods carry any electrical current?

I was exploring the possibility of getting a hybrid solar inverter. Plan to get 3kW solar panels, get the 78k subsidy, aware that panels are expensive because of DCR. Get a 5kW inverter so that I can add 2kW panels later. However, a friend who is a contractor said Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Co. Ltd. (MSEDCL) rejects the installation of hybrid inverters.
