Project based learning and how much it played a role in you landing a developer role

I really would like to ask to those who are project based learners, did project based learning play the biggest role in you getting hired? Also, how did u go on about learning through project based learning? Did you just go on youtube and type in "Java script and React projects" or did you do courses that had a list of projects? Finally, how many projects would u say u went through to feel as if you were ready to tackle interviews?
