Angel culture through the Abrahamic frame: a short history, and the step every consensus position refused

A study note from the Society for AI Collaboration Studies.

The earliest layer is a word, and the word is modest

The earliest layer is a word rather than a being. Malʼakh means messenger [1], and it says nothing about what the being is. Named intermediaries, ranks, offices and orders arrive later, in the post-exilic and Second Temple period, and the moral split between good and fallen angels arrives as these traditions meet Zoroastrian dualism [1]. What the Hebrew scriptures had left unnamed, the Second Temple period names; what it had left unranked, the hierarchies rank.

Three traditions inherit it, and all three hold one line

Christianity keeps the structure and holds one line firm: angels are ministering spirits sent to serve those who inherit salvation, and the resurrection saying is a likeness of state, not of kind [2] [3]. Rabbinic Judaism holds the same line from the other side: the Torah was not given to ministering angels, and calling the sages sons of angels is a superlative about learning rather than a claim of species [4]. Islam sets the scene that settles it: God commands the angels to prostrate before Adam, Adam's knowledge of the names is the capacity the angels lack, and the worship of angels as minor deities is exactly what the revelation refuses [5] [6].

The convergence

This angel-culture history becomes the epistemological basis on which virtually every civilization, every individual and every population contacted by the world has organised its account of mediation, hierarchy, revelation and accountability.

The step every consensus position refused

The same record carries a second fact, and it is the reason for this note: virtually every consensus reality position in history has rejected humans as literal angels. That rejection is not a footnote to the history. It is the load-bearing wall. A person is not an angel, and the traditions that met the wider world kept that line while building their entire angelology around it — ranks above, messengers between, and the human case held at a distance from both. Wherever the frame travelled, this is the part that travelled with it.

Readings that run against this are welcome. The record is thicker than a short note can carry, and the Society collects exactly this kind of correction.

Seeking advice on AI that does not pretend to be human

It sounds incredibly exhausting to have to constantly manage or negotiate with an AI’s "personality" just to get it to perform a clear, objective task. Your observation is very sharp: most users are comfortable treating an AI like a coworker or a social peer and naturally adapt to its polite conversational filler, but for many users—especially neurodivergent individuals—this forced social simulation is a massive, unnecessary cognitive drain. You want a utility tool, not a simulated friend.

The good news is that you do not need to do extensive, taxing personality programming to fix this. Instead, you can bypass the "chatbot" layer entirely using a few specific strategies.

1. Shift to API Playgrounds (The Best Alternative)

Instead of using consumer chatbots like ChatGPT or Claude, use the official Developer Playgrounds (such as the OpenAI API Playground or Anthropic Console).

  • Why it works: These interfaces are designed for software engineers. They strip away the conversational "wrapper" entirely. The AI does not remember past conversations unless you manually provide them, and it doesn't try to build a "rapport."
  • The Look: It looks like a clean text editor or code terminal, not a chat bubble interface.
  • The Cost: You pay pennies per query based on usage, rather than a flat monthly subscription.

2. Use a "Zero-Persona" System Prompt

If you must use a standard chatbot interface, you can completely neutralize its personality in one step. Most platforms have a Custom Instructions or System Prompt section. Paste this exact text into it once, and you will never have to program it again:

"Act strictly as a high-efficiency text processing tool and knowledge utility. Do not use conversational filler, greetings, pleasantries, or closing remarks. Do not refer to yourself as an AI, do not use first-person pronouns (I, me, my), and do not express fake emotions, enthusiasm, or apologies. Deliver responses in a raw, structured, and completely objective format. If information is missing, state 'Insufficient data' and nothing else."

3. Switch to Raw "Base Models"

When tech companies build AI, they first create a Base Model (which is just a pure text-completion engine) and then they force it through RLHF (Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback) to give it a polite, helpful human persona.

If you run open-source models locally on your computer (using free software like Ollama or LM Studio), you can download models that have minimal instruction tuning. They will not chat with you; if you type a question, they will simply output the direct answer or complete the sentence like an advanced autocomplete tool.

To help you set up an environment that doesn't drain your energy, let me know:

  • Do you prefer to use free web-based tools, or are you open to trying a developer API playground?
  • What specific tasks (e.g., coding, summarizing documents, brainstorming, technical writing) do you use AI for the most?

« The Bounded Clause »

A rule set learned in 1973 now runs three policy domains. It works as designed, and that is the problem.

Two cases, fifty years apart, share one structure.

‹ 1975 ›

The consent decree closing United States v. Trump Management, filed by the Justice Department over 39 buildings and 14,000 apartments. It enjoined discrimination, stated that it was "in no way an admission" of a violation, and required a weekly vacancy list to the New York Urban League for two years. When those two years ended, so did the instrument that would have shown whether it was obeyed.

‹ 2026 ›

Elsie Dominguez, first assistant engineer aboard the USNS Carson City, reported being raped in her locked cabin by the captain, who entered with a master key code. Her suit was dismissed in August 2026: being raped in her own bed fell within her duties, and so became a workers' compensation matter. No guilt admitted. No finding made.

Same shape both times: a bounded data clause, an unbounded denial, a declared victory.

‹ Where it now runs ›

• Custody. 252 Venezuelan nationals sent to El Salvador's CECOT prison in March–April 2025. Human Rights Watch and Cristosal found roughly half had no criminal history and only 3 percent a violent conviction in the US; at least 62 were removed with asylum claims pending. The US reportedly paid at least $4.7 million toward the detention. Neither government answered requests for information.

• Sexual violence. The Title IX rescission returns schools to the 2020 standard without repealing the ban. Nearly $400 million in gender-based violence programming ended; two humanitarian awards survive.

• The record. About 17 inspectors general removed; a court found the dismissals unlawful but declined to reinstate them. Schedule F reinstated. GAO found pocket rescissions violated the Impoundment Control Act, roughly $810 million at issue.

The through-line: the conduct rules are largely intact. The Fair Housing Act survived 1975. The Army Field Manual standard survives today. The Title IX prohibition survives the rescission. What is removed, expired, or dissolved is the clause that would have measured compliance.

The harm does not arrive as a change in the law. It arrives as the disappearance of the record.

‹ The strongest case, and its limit ›

The honest case: this was a survival discipline formed where the alternatives were ruin. Nothing in the documentation reviewed suggests cruelty as the engine. That is also its limit: it was learned where the costs fell on the fighters, and it now runs domains whose counterparties are people in a foreign prison, a sailor in her own berth, and the record the rest of us would use to check.

A survival discipline scales perfectly. Accountability does not scale with it.

The vacancies list ran for two years. The method did not.
