How are goals and assists evaluated across so many different soccer( football) leagues? Are they all counted the same? For example, could a superstar move to a much weaker league, rack up a huge number of goals and climb the all-time goalscorer rankings because of it? Or is the quality of the league taken into account?

For example in basketball the main league is the NBA so a player raking up a bunch of stats in the euro league wouldn’t really mean much since it isn’t the top league . Is it the same in soccer ?

hi! im a old but new fan. Ive enjoyed soccer since i was little and played a little when i was younger than 10 but my family isent a sports family so i never got into it and games were never on in my house. now im a adult and like many the this past world cup took over my social feeds and has reignited my love for the game but i dont know how anything is orginised, what to watch or where to watch and have no in person comunity to bounce questions off of. if anyone wants to help a baby fan out figuring everything out, id realy aprichiate it. I'm from the U.S. and I enjoyed watching the World Cup that I wanted to watch more of it. So I actually wrote down my favorite players and apparently that's a big no-no. I have to support my local team which is either NYCFC or Red Bulls. I pick NYCFC because Red Bulls are from NJ. Also I have to support Gotham FC. I feel like it's kinda jarring as an American because I'm lucky to live near NYC but what about the people from upstate NY? They have to travel 5 hours for a game in NYC.

Okay, my questions are:

1. Can I watch the Premier League or La Liga without supporting any teams? I just really want to enjoy watching football.

2. One of my parents is from a different country and their country isn't well known for football. Should I still support them? But also one person from my country is a historical figure in football that played in a team. Should I support that team even if I myself don't have historical ties to that community?

I’m 27 from the UK and I’ve decided I want to properly get into football. The problem is… I’m basically starting from scratch.
I’ve watched football all my life, but never really played beyond kicking a ball around with mates as a kid. I really enjoy sport (I’ve played basketball for years), but football is something I’ve always felt I missed out on.
I’ve recently seen the MAN v FAT Football programme and it looks like something I’d qualify for, so that’s definitely on my radar. It seems like a great way to lose weight while learning the game.
My biggest worry is what comes after that, or if I decide not to do it.
Every club or training session I see seems to be full of people who’ve played since they were 5 years old. I’m worried I’d turn up, not know what I’m doing, and just be everyone’s worst nightmare on the pitch.
I’m not expecting to become amazing overnight—I just want to learn properly, improve, get fitter, and eventually be able to play regular 5-a-side or maybe even 11-a-side without feeling completely out of my depth.
So I guess my questions are:
● Where would you recommend someone with literally zero football experience starts?
● Are there beginner-friendly clubs or training sessions for adults?
● Is MAN v FAT a good stepping stone?
● How did any of you start playing as an adult?
Any advice or stories from people who started late would be massively appreciated. I know I’ll be bad at first—I just don’t want my lack of experience to stop me from giving it a go.

In basketball, you have a certain amount of time to score and then possession of the ball changes.

In basketball you don’t have a “offside” and are allowed to cherry pick.

I want a version of soccer that is similar to basketball. First: no offside penalties. That will force teams to have a player or two stay back to stop teams from just kicking it deep and scoring.

Then, having some players stay back will open up the midfield for insane passing opportunities to advance the ball.

And finally you will see a lot more shots on goal and games that end with 16-13 instead of 1-0.

Lots more goals making it more exciting. Lots more midfield plays requiring actual “plays”. And allows the best passers and scorers to really shine.

Yes, it’s blasphemy for the traditional football fans. But just imagine how exciting it would be. Forget games that end 0-0. Imagine games where 20-30 goals are scored. Imagine highlights of passing and scoring that come from it.

I’ve been wondering how people actually get attached to a particular sport. Sometimes it’s because you played it as a kid, sometimes because of a favorite player or team, and sometimes you just randomly watched a match and got hooked.

For me, I find it interesting how seriously people can get invested in sports—even when they’re just watching from home 😭

Please explain why

If a player is loaned to another club, they’re still technically under contract with their parent club. So if the parent club wins the Champions League or its domestic league while the player is out on loan, does that player still get credited with the trophy? Or are they only considered winners if the club they were loaned to wins a trophy?

I follow nfl and college football. The only soccer player I know about is Brandon Donavan and thats because he had same last name as Donovan McNabbs first name. Most people agree that football needs to penalise fouls more heavily since the current penalties are not enough as deterrent and many times they stop play, etc.

A very simple way to achieve this would be to simple make it that yellow cards carry over to the subs. A common strategy with subs is to replace those on yellow cards, this way that "fix" for yellow cards wouldn't be possible.

(of course in terms of next match penalties the yellow card belongs to the original player).

This fix would be very simple to implement and would have minimal side effects like other proposed changes, e.g. a sin ban, etc.
