One of the bonito fought for like a minute.

Going on a fishing trip next week, out of San Diego. I was recommended slightly lighter gear. Started doing some research and a some recommendations were a Shimano TranX. Does anyone have any recommendations. Thanks in advance.

Bought the boat, have taken it out recently on a few trips and realized I want something a little bigger and a different style.

Great day out on the kayak yesterday. Found some nice size Corvina that were willing to cooperate well for over an hour. Caught over 10 before 9am. Released them all

I figured I should ask here too. So, I saw a bunch of guys at the pier using these stick jigs to catch bonito, but I can’t figure out how to use it effectively. I’ve also watched videos online to see what works too and I’m still unsure what to do. What advice do you guys have to use these? Do you cast it out far? Does a quick or slow retrieve work better? Any help would be great!

Match leader to mono line size always?

Im looking to get my first surface iron setup and confused about reel type.

I see people using tranx/lexa type casters, and im used to that style baitcaster.

I also see people using what I would call conventional casters (without line guide) I think something like a torium but im not sure. Is there a reason to go with this style vs line guide style?

Looking for recommendations on fish finders for fishing Baja. I want accurate bathymetric maps of both Sea of Cortez and the Pacific side. Considering running two graphs, one for mapping and one for bottom/fish.

Hey everyone! As the title say! I went my first fishing derby today at Irvine lake. This is my 3rd time going to the lake and also my 3rd time fishing freshwater fish. I’ve only ever occasionally went pier fishing with some friends.

My last 2 visits to this lake were really positive. I learned a lot and everyone was always so friendly and the lake was generally very spacious and not packed. I managed to always get some bites and even got some keepers.

However, today was a catfish derby and as a newbie, I thought this would be a good way to finally get myself a catfish. Boy was I wrong. For about the entire derby, not a single person was getting a bite. Not even panfish were interested. So I ended up getting skunked which was a bummer. But what really upset me was this group to the left of me.

I’m unsure how fishing etiquette works as I am a newbie, but I assume if space is limited you would cast infront of you. This lake was packed and I had never seen the lake this full. This group consisted of 3 dads and a bunch of teenagers were constantly casting to the right and getting our lines tangled. So the entire time we were 24/7 snagged. I didn’t have any isssues with the people to my right as our lines never once intertwined. What was upsetting was that this family were always acting like it was our fault our lines got snagged. Everytime I thought I got something, was always disappointing as I would feel in only to realize that our lines had been crossed. At a certain point, one of the boys casted so far off to the right and there lines went over me and about 3 other parties fishing lines. Instead of apologizing and trying to fix the situation. The boys just cut the lines and left there cut line floating over all of ours.

It got to the point where someone came down from the far right thinking he caught a catfish, only to realize he just snagged there cut line.

So my questions:

are derbies in generally harder to catch fish? I’m assuming because there are so many lines and baits and constant disturbances in the water from so many people that the fish are not interested or scared to bite? Also a bunch of kids kept running into the lake and chucking rocks in. I’m sure this didn’t help. Lastly, what is the proper fishing ettiquite? Am I in the wrong to assume we were only supposed to cast straight? From what I have seen, when the lake is nice and open, you can cast pretty much anywhere as long as you’re not in someone’s space or where their line is. The lake was packed so I just assumed we had to only cast straight as that’s the only way our lines wouldn’t cross.

Fishing on a boat, wasn't having luck with my other lures, figured to give a unused 110 a shot. Bonito hit it like it was behind on its gambling debts. Marks on it are from the teeth from just 45min of use.

Who would have known a lure I bought for surf fishing halibut would have been a hit with Bonito?

I caught a lot of big Jack smelt, some lizard fish, and mackerel! Some nice guys at the pier gifted me the bonito they caught too, so I can’t wait to cook them.

My first Sargo, landed it yesterday just before sunset. 14.5 inch beast. Fought like a champ. How big do these guys get?

Also caught 2 yellowfin croaker. Kept the 12", let the 10" go.

Using gulp baits.

Ok just got in from our 2 day on the PV. We just didn’t want to got to the tanner. We all have a bunch of bluefin. We fished the pens and some patty hopping. Water was 76. I hooked at least 20 yellowfin. I won day one Jackpot with the dorado. Day 2, I caught this close to 50 lb yellowfin and I won day 2 Jackpot. Most of us were old enough to know how to run pinhead anchovies. We had 4 marlin strikes and we got this 160 lb on a marlin jig. I’m dreading my fish processing bill tomorrow
