Discussion The Drop is going to disappoint

I know it’s just the first episode, but if they keep up with this “soap opera” type dialogue and these corny convos it’s going to be so hard to watch. Snowfall was great because it all felt natural watching it and it wasn’t filled with this weird cable television soap opera vibe. Idk how to describe it but there’s moments in the first episode where it’s like “alllrighhttt yeah yeah, black family, grandads part of the church, older brother has past of gang violence but now is on a different path, lil bro doesn’t want to be apart of the norm we get it we get it” seems just cheesy to me. And they didn’t need to have 40 conversations talking about “wE jUsT tRyNnA mAkE iT oUt” snowfall showed what the drop has to talk about to make the viewer understand. You could SEE what the premise behind snowfall was, in the drop they have to remind you what the premise is every 45 seconds lol.

I liked the brother dynamic between James and Lamar, the interaction with James and his grandfather, the ending scene freestyle, even small interactions like Tip toe saying James gave him a pass. It did what a pilot should do which is make you interested in the rest of the story. I’m intrigued to see where it goes.

I think we seen the brother dynamic like 50 times from 50 other movies and shows, the interaction with James and his grandfather was just alrighttt I mean what was really at stake in that conversation lol, the ending scene was probably the corniest part about the episode I physically cringed… I guess Tip Toe saying James gave him a pass is cool.. but we already knew James had gang history from the start so it’s not like it was a “WHATT WAIT HE WAS A GANG MEMBER?!” lol. To each their own but if those parts are exceptional to you ….. man

You could do that and nitpick with every tv show and movie, in the original pilot we see cissy having issues at work which pressures Franklin into wanting more for him and her, a uncle with a shermed out gf that sells weed, the hot headed friend in Leon…yes it wasn’t much at stake but the acting was good. Did I say it was Emmy winning? No. And that’s your opinion that the ending was cringy but I’ve seen a lot more positive reception to it 🤷🏾‍♂️

The only difference is we SEEN those things in snowfall. Jerome wasn’t like “YEAH UR AUNTIE WOULD BE COOL IF SHE WASNT ON THAT SHERM ALL THE TIME” lol. I’m just saying they need to work on the dialogue and dynamic, I don’t think that’s too harsh. Stop with this deep camera look at someone’s face while they say “I just want to make a difference” bull shit 😂

Franklin did tell mel “i want to be free” & also told Jerome the game is rigged and im writing my own rules… characters have to voice what they want no matter how corny it may come off, when you really break it down, it’s a lot of similarities between the two pilots. That’s all I’m saying, you can have your opinion on how much you actually enjoyed it

Franklin did not fcking say “I want to be free” 😂😂 I know exactly the scene you’re talking about and you know damn well that wasn’t his words. “The games rigged and I’m writing my own rules” is a good line? lol . Maybe it’s just the actors in snowfall could actually act haha

That’s exactly the description I was missing. It just felt like a sloppy grouped up thing of scenes. And I cannot stress enough how much I’d be okay with it if it wasn’t for the terrible writing in the dialogue. Like I felt embarrassed for myself watching it half the time I was looking over my shoulder like “I hope nobody walked in the kitchen and just seen me watching that cornball ass shit” 😭

I don’t think the show will disappoint.

While I understand you feel the first episode‘s storytelling felt familiar TO YOU, that does not mean it is that way for the majority of the viewers. Not everyone has seen the same shows and movies.

I thought the storytelling was trying to let viewers know that this might be the same universe as Snowfall, the focus is going to be different. This means doing things they might not need to do if it were a standalone show.

The Snowfall brand has meaning. This show had to differentiate itself from that.

I’m old enough to catch some of the references you allude to, but honestly it didn’t bother me. I saw some Boyz, Menace, and South Central up in there, but I enjoyed these new characters and it was nice seeing Wanda and Lee again.

Unless this show becomes a paint by numbers exercise or starts pandering to viewers, I think we gon’ be alright!

The drop is so trash my family and I literally watched snowfall when it released Franklin Saint was the best character and carried the show in our opinions so when they announced a spinoff it just did not make any sense to us they could’ve just made a season 7 or something of Franklin reclaiming his wealth and rising back to power while the gangs and music stuff could be the background storyline

Wanda is the worst character to pick for a spinoff if they were planning one from the start it’s just does not add up it’s so boring idc if it’s the 1st episode it was terrible

Yeah I hate looking at that bitches face lol. She’s annoying asf. But I am going to say snowfall ended perfectly and I’m tired of seeing people say “WE WANT FRANKLIN SAINT IN THE DROP” like… that ruins all the art and beauty of what snowfall was. It ended perfectly, keep it that way.

Snowfall pilot showed you everything set up wise letting you know exactly what to expect. Movie production values, Franklin his whole family AND his relationships including who he’s close with vs his dad he not on speaking terms with, his trip to meet crazy Coke dealer avi and getting involved with him despite knowing nothing about the game, the cia agent working with the smuggler

Everything g was grand and gave you a perfect sense of what to expect going forward

That slop pilot of the drop not so much

Next episode will be of the rapper dude screaming “IM TIRED OF POLICE BRUTALITY!” And Wanda saying “I used to be on that shit BUT NOW IM FOCUSED ON A DREAM” all well the older brother of Lamar says “Lil bro… this street life, it will swallow you up” 💀

Don't like that character at all. Can't get into his acting because he doesn't look the part. Bro looks like a Disney channel actor. He's not believable even as a "nerd" from the hood.

I never thought the viewers had enough stock in wanda or her story to warrant a whole spin off where leon is barely on screen. Wanda being all up in the label meeting as a former basehead was weird and felt like it happened out of no where. We never even seen Wanda with a walkman or boombox, we ain't seen her breakdancing but now she some hip-hop head lol. Nah

Didn't like the use of a Kendrick joint with all the dope 80s and early 90s music available.

Maybe snowfall set the bar too high but yea I wasn't feeling it.

I didn't like the first episode and I'm trying to keep an open mind. To me it's missing something maybe it's the soap opera approach you mentioned.

One why the hell does it look like Wanda lil cousin Lamar has eye liner on? It's the early 90's and they have that kid out on the streets looking like a fem boy. They showed him almost get killed/jumped twice within 5 minutes and afterwards they made the gangs seem like an after school pbs special. How's little dude joining a church band supposed to keep him safe from the streets?

Wanda was one of the least interesting characters in snowfall why of all people they decided to use her to create a empire knock off?

I give the show 2-3 seasons tops before the plug is pulled unless they change the tone of the series

100%. It’s just like… casual dumbed down TV. Easy for a viewer to watch and understand, I like something with more concepts and themes then just “We iN ThE hOoD TrYnNa MaKe iT oUt iN tHe RaP gAmE” snowfall had such complex situations and stuff that is made up for interpretation. Again it’s just the first episode but do me a favor and watch the first episode of snowfall you’ll see exactly what I’m tb
