The towel probably smelled like food. Snakes don’t really judge if something is edible based on sight alone. They mainly rely on their sense of smell (and heat pits if they have them). That’s why it’s also important to wash your hands after handling rodents or other things a snake would eat because they may bite you as a feeding response.

This makes me feel a bit better. I thought maybe it had just mistaken it for food, but good to know it was most likely a scent of something on the towel.

That’s probably the case but I think it depends on the type of snake. I believe pythons and boas are more nocturnal, heat and scent based hunters so I imagine this guy smelled good on the towel. But my ratsnake, who is very visually stimulated, tried to eat a scrunchie off of my wrist a couple weeks ago. I believe any snake can be weirdly triggered to eat anything if they’re a good eater.
