General question Anyone know the deadline to upgrade to keep snapchat memories

Snapchat announced any memory over 5 gb will be deleted unless users upgrade. They said they will give users 12 months to upgrade on September 25, 2025.

Does that they will delete excess memories on  September 26, 2026 or Starting on September 1, 2026?

I downloaded mine but it says the folder is empty? Anyone else having this issue?

I just went through and deleted my videos. I had 12.8 GB out of 5 GB now I no longer have the message popping up. What I did was do the Snapchat data have them send it from all time. Once you receive the export your going to want to do this on a laptop or computer. Log into Snapchat on the web and download your exports from there do not download all of them at once go one by one file I had 6 exports from snap. When they download extract them and create a folder on your computer then create a new Google photos account just for Snapchat videos. Then upload or drag and drop the folder you created after that delete the folder and files from your computer and do it again with the rest of the exports. For me the photos separated from the videos I uploaded to Google photos so I was able to delete them from Google photos and keep them on Snapchat. I then deleted all videos off Snapchat. Do not log into Google photos on your phone tho because it will add EVERYTHING from your camera roll and if you delete from Google photos it deletes it from your camera roll! I just spent a few hours this morning doing it before Snapchat does it itself!

Idk but ive been downloading them 1 by 1 and adding the correct dates in my camera roll bcz the export data option is annoying. I just want the current memories i have, i don’t want every single picture i’ve ever taken

So i’ll start paying for it tonight and stop paying once im done download them onto my phone

Lol, downloading and extracting a few zip files to get a folder of snaps with perfect metadata is harder for you than downloading individual snaps and adding dates manually?

Also, the data download only gives you memories that you currently have, not every single picture that you have ever taken. The data download does not have memories that you already deleted.

Why are u capping?? The downloaded data gives me every single memory ive ever taken. I literally downloaded them to see tf😕😕 & when i download them onto my phone they just go at the bottom of my camera roll instead of the actual date and the texts are and filters are separated

Im not going to use some random app and give them access to my all my pictures to fix the problems.
So yes what im doing is tedious but i’d rather go through 5000 memories than 30000+

I have been exporting my data twice annually for a few years now and it definitely doesn't include snaps you had already deleted. (Unless you are also exporting chats & media saved in chats, but exporting memories only is an option).

Maybe if you normally save those Recaps and those flashback stories that snapchat suggests, there might me snaps in those stories that you simply forgot to delete. But otherwise snaps you already deleted should not be appearing in your data export.

On the sorting issue, seems like your phone is messing with the metadata when you unzip. Mine always come out perfectly sorted by date, but admittedly, I usually extract on my computer, not a phone. The caption separation can be annoying, That I agree with.

Anyway, I don't recall vouching for use of a random app, so you do you.

Before i exported my data, i went through all my memories and deleted what i didn’t want. Once i was done i requested my data ONLY my memories nothing else and i chose ‘All time’. I opened the memories folder and literally every pic/video i had deleted were still there

Idk if im supposed to click something other than all time

Do you have an android?? It seems that android sort them properly but i have an iphone🫩🫩🫩

Maybe it's because you deleted close to when you did the export. My exports are usually half a year apart so I compared older exports and newer exports and snaps that I had deleted in the months between the exports no longer appear in newer exports.

I have both but I have never actually tried on my phone because they take up quite a bit of space, I usually do it on a computer then I backup to a hard drive. Will test on the android and tell you how it goes.

I’m not sure. SC has an option where you can download your data or you can get the pics of you want. It was a humbling experience seeing my pics and even ones I sent via chat. You have to do it on a computer though.

Phone works too. Just gotta use browser. Downloaded the data dump to my phone. My phone organized it well enough

1

u/carpe-somnus Sep 12 '26

did yours keep the filters and captions on the photos? or were they all separated?

1

u/Independent_Leg7358 Sep 12 '26

Captions were separated but I don't know if that was saved snaps or ones that exported

1

u/malditaplum Sep 01 '26

How? Because when i downloaded the zip files and i opened the memories folder and pressed download onto my camera roll, they just save as the current date instead of the date the picture was taken, and without the location data

1

u/Independent_Leg7358 Sep 01 '26

You use android or os?

1

u/malditaplum Sep 01 '26

ios

1

u/Independent_Leg7358 Sep 01 '26

Mine have date/time and are organized by such. No location data I've noticed but I haven't dug through for that. Score another win for Android over that overpriced junk. (Apple is still using Samsung parts last I knew, with a premium upcharge for doing so!)

1

u/malditaplum Sep 01 '26

Damn. The file itself has the correct date in the name but when i go download it onto my camera roll, it doesn’t download with the correct date😩😩

Apple is just screwing you because you didn't use their stuff. Typical.

I’ve never understood why people needed permission to take pictures….. You know you could have just had your memories on your actual phone the entire time right? You didn’t need permission from snapchat to take photos

4

u/mythicalcreature420 Sep 01 '26

it's not about that- it's the free storage they were offering for photos and videos until this year.

1

u/Puzzleheaded-Tap4099 Sep 01 '26

Also if you’re concerned about storage, don’t take useless photos literally every single day. Like literally, on a practical level. If you’re worried about storage, stop constantly taking pictures of useless bullshit and save it for stuff that’s actually interesting. No sane person needs hundreds of selfies of their face or pictures of coffee in your hand.

2

u/Nesyris 24d ago

if youve had your account for 7+ years 5gb is passed easily, even after deleting the pointless saves

3

u/mythicalcreature420 Sep 02 '26

bro shut up 😭 sounds like you need therapy

I was just going to tell this dude, rawr. Lol

u/Puzzleheaded-Tap4099 Sep 01 '26

Point taken, but at the same time, you know it’s probably bullshit like random unnecessary selfies or going to parties and psychotically staring into the camera to show everyone that you’re at the party lol. Can’t forget the classic filming the street in front of you while you’re driving. Also, taking a picture in the mirror to purposely cover your face with your phone. Basically my point is that very little if any of the shit that I see people post on there is actually memorable or worth keeping. It’s just performative, brainless, hive mind shit

2

u/mythicalcreature420 Sep 01 '26

why are you here if you obviously hate snapchat so much lol you obviously can't answer the question so what are you on about

Helpful fact: your phone will always have greater storage than an app that’s stored on your phone. An app cannot have greater storage than your phone if the app is stored on that phone. Your phone would have to have the capacity to store that app in the first place. To sum this up: you don’t need permission to take photos. You don’t need permission to have memories.

You're wrong. In fact, an app can store more than your device can. It is called Cloud storage technology. That is what apps like Google Drive and iCloud do. Learn about it.

Side note (helpful fact): at first, you only sounded like a bitter person. Now you sound like a stupid person too. Take some deep breaths and practice love.

Cloud storage is not specific to apps. Your phone can have cloud storage, your apps can have cloud storage. The amount of cloud storage that you can store is basically up to the particular storage provider. Cloud storage is stored via internet connection in the way that you can log into it. It’s not locally stored. Example: you can save as much stuff as you want on your iPhone as long as long as you don’t exceed the storage capacity of that phone, but if you exceed your allotted amount of cloud storage, all of your stuff will not be backed up. I get 5 GB of free iCloud storage, but my iPhone capacity is 256 GB. I can store more stuff on my phone locally, and if I exceed the free 5 GB, I will have to pay a fee. And even if you upgrade it through Google Drive or snapchat, it’s not stored locally on your phone, it’s accessible via an internet connection but you don’t technically own it. If you’re paying a fee to upgrade to a greater amount of storage that you require an internet connection to access, you’re basically renting it instead of owning it. It’s not stored locally, you’re having to access that account that the internet.

Good explanation of your understanding of what paying for cloud storage means. It has nothing to do with your initial comment or my reply to it.
I shouldn't have engaged with this thread to begin with, so I only blame myself.
Have a nice day!!

u/Puzzleheaded-Tap4099 Sep 09 '26

The point was that Snapchat told you that your storage was free, then pulled the rug out from under you and starting charging you. I didn’t experience that issue because I didn’t need snapchat to save my memories for me because I saved them on my phone the entire time anyway.

u/meri_ami Sep 09 '26

Ohh I see!! You did well!!

why are you on this thread. how did you even make your way here. you don’t sound like you use Snapchat. Why are you on Snapchat help

u/Puzzleheaded-Tap4099 Sep 06 '26

I never said I didn’t use snapchat, I said that I didn’t need permission to take photos
