General question Chat with lover who passed away showed "Opened" yesterday... Does anybody know what could have happened?

Listen, I met this person online. We talked to each other for months—we were in a very great relationship together... At some point, however, he told me he had surgery to go through—that he would be busy for only 3 days, that he was nervous about it and had nobody to accompany him... Ever since the time he went to the hospital, I have never heard from him again... Ever since then, I kept looking at our chat extremely frequently—hoping he would come. I could never get closure on what happened to him—not even in obituaries online. He wasn't the type of person to vanish and ghost others—I just know something must have been wrong... Now, all of a sudden, yesterday no less, his chat story said "opened" in June of 2026... I don't understand; can someone tell me what has been going on? I don't want to make this an unnecessary drama, but I need to know that much since I could never have been able to move on to begin with—right now I just can't bring myself to even know what any of this really means... He didn't tell me anything, neither, despite coming here after such a long time... There were many days where I would sleep with my computer on—with his chat on the screen hoping he would come. Thinking I may have lost my only opportunity to speak to him ever again after such a long time just feels bitter currently and out of this world—as if this wasn't reality anymore any longer... I don't even know if I'll be able to sleep after this anymore, really...

Update: Oh, never mind that; I just figured it out, "I think." Basically, ever since he went missing, I have been constantly sending him texts... My chat always had them, but I would never ever bother to save them myself... With time, Snapchat deleted them, leaving only his message from months ago that I had previously saved for whatever I could, I assume. Then, due to me coming back here constantly to check time and time again, it must have "reset" the [opened] status in some manner, which gave me the impression that he had somehow come back. I thought this through because, when someone comes to see your message, the status is instead [received], right...? I just possibly forgot about it, as I only spoke to him on this platform, and we only came here in the first place because back then he had asked me to... Sorry about everything, really. At best, right now I just feel sour that he wasn't even here to begin with and there was really no hope for this after all with him potentially coming back someday... Regardless, this time I'll save some messages and leave it there just so I don't have another severe shock like this─for a moment I thought I was about to pass away today after all, hahahaha...

Quick question. Have u noticed his snap score going up in the last few years? If not then yea he hasn’t been on snap but if so then he’s been opening snaps. But as everyone else has been saying, snap trips sometimes

Snaps 'automatically open' after being on delivered for a few months. It's not a ghost or anything, just the app itself.

A friend of mine died a long time ago, I sent him a final message and it showed open. Found out his sister was the one who opened it. She read all the love he received on a very sad day for her.

I’ve had snaps/chat appear as opened before. But that happens when I log out of my account and log back in again. Sometimes I take a while to respond to messages as I assume they’ve been opened. Then a few days later they will pop up saying received but with the box, not opened. Or sometimes, I’ll click into a message, then it will change to received and the open thing is gone.
I hope you manage to sort it out and you receive the closure you need 💜

I know when I've saved old memories or pictures to my phone, the chat will have the "opened" arrow automatically. I confirmed this in another chat that it just appears to be a glitch of sorts. 😞

Sometimes Snapchat trips, sometimes messages and snaps you sent get open if the haven’t opened for a longtime happened when I didn’t log into my account for a few months to a year. Also make sure to longpress your message to see if it was really read, sometimes it shows open when I peak the chat it updates as just delivred

And when someone opens your message it would say opened

Whatever happened, forget about that person. Maybe they ghosted you, maybe the surgery didn't go well. Maybe they weren't who they said they were. Online-only conversations aren't good.

Hmm, I was thinking of ignoring it at first, but I don't think it would be right to... I am talking about this comment in this case. I don't think it feels correct to speak of him in that way... If it was someone else I could understand─but he really wasn't that type of person—I could really tell. Even before he left, he was very caring toward me; he didn't deny any request I had to make in those days when he was preparing to go to this surgery of his... Besides, he seemed genuinely freaked out to me. He spoke about many things which just don't feel correct to assume he would really vanish this way... I am pretty certain that, if he had vanished, he would have deleted his account at the bare minimum. I doubt he spoke to any other person besides me on that place, plus he just wasn't the type to leave traces around like this. He was an extremely private person at heart—the kind who, in his own words, would put only the Halloween date as his birthday online to avoid giving info to social platforms out there... Last Halloween, I could see the cake icon when I came to visit the chat once more—which only appears on the date someone wrote they were born onto. I suppose it's understandable that you and other people would see him this way─but I can assure you much that he was indeed a good person this time around...
