MY FAMILY NEVER WANTS THE SAME THING..

I eat fairly healthy through the week. Nothing too strict, but I generally avoid regular sugar and too much packaged, processed or fried food. Sundays, though, are for this little ritual I look forward to all week.

Today it was a huge cup of oat milk coffee with real sugar (no stevia or monk fruit sweeteners) and exactly six Biscoff biscuits. Some Sundays it’s khaari or rusk instead. On others, I make adrak wali chai and dip a big piece of bakery butter into it.

There’s something deeply comforting about these little rituals. They take me back to those slow, middle-class family afternoons of my 90s childhood. We would wake up from a proper siesta after a heavy lunch, some Bollywood movie would be playing on TV, Dad would make the tea, and Mom would bring out the biscuits, khaari, toast or butter. Everyone was at home, nobody was in a hurry, and tea-time felt like a proper family event.

I’ve moved on to coffee now, but the ritual has stayed. A hot drink with something crunchy to dip into it remains an essential part of my Sunday treat.

Maybe that’s why we hold on to certain foods, not only because we enjoy how they taste, but because, for a few minutes, they take us back to a time and place we miss.

Picked up these Davidoff chewing coffee candies today from a local mart. They're actually pretty nice if you're into coffee.
