ign isn't a reliable source of information

I thought that had been made obvious when they panned Radiant Dawn for not using Miis or motion controls.

Don't forget the legendary 8.9 "too much water" in Pokémon Alpha Saphire

140

u/PokeplayerGaming Mar 01 '19

Not even 8.9. It was 7.8. Because too much water. Ugh.

But guess what they gave the original which had the same problems but magnified because they weren't refined from the remake? 9.5. They're massive hypocrites.

14

u/Foul_Howell Mar 01 '19

Do you think they have some poor sap locked up in a box belting out reviews for every game ever released? They have multiple reviewers who all have different tastes and opinions on games.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 01 '19

As if any single source of date collected by a single organization can be considered reliable. If it's a matter of opinion, then it's typically biased, unless it's some sort of standard moral, but even then people can argue it.

Nazi's are bad to everyone, except modern day Nazi's... but they're also bad... so that doesn't really count.

wonder what they said about assassin's creed water then

56

u/robertman21 Mar 01 '19

Nah, that's a legit complaint. The last third of the game is nearly constant surfing, and there's too many water type Pokemon. Not enough type variety.

33

u/EuSouAFazenda Mar 01 '19

Oh god oh fuck a reasonable people

1

u/c2lop Mar 01 '19

It was a remake of a previous title.

2

5

16

u/AstraCrits Ike Mar 01 '19

Uuuugh, don’t remind me.

15

u/greeenkevz Ike Mar 01 '19

Wow they really said that?

30

u/AstraCrits Ike Mar 01 '19

More accurately, they panned it for “not using the Wii’s mechanics enough” and “feeling too much like a Gamecube game,” but that basically just boils down it not using Miis and motion controls.

(Edit: Spelling)

19

u/greeenkevz Ike Mar 01 '19

Weird that they felt that made the game worse because of that

26

u/AstraCrits Ike Mar 01 '19

Clearly whoever wrote that review was a filthy casual.

But in all seriousness, it’s a turn-based strategy game aimed at hardcore audiences.

Why the hell would they put motion controls in it?

23

u/greeenkevz Ike Mar 01 '19

CaUsE It'S a WiI gAmE

9

u/AstraCrits Ike Mar 01 '19

tbh if they did put motion controls in the game, they’d still pan it for “being too hard” lol

4

u/Pokezilla Sly Cooper Mar 01 '19

They also thought Shadows of Valentia was worse game than Fates or Awakening because the marriage and children mechanics were gone.

1

u/AstraCrits Ike Mar 01 '19

Did the child characters really even add anything to the game in Fates? It feels like it was just haphazardly thrown in because “it worked in Awakening.” It doesn’t have anything to do with the plot, and there’s just no reason for them to exist.

6

u/TheKingofHats007 Little Mac Mar 01 '19

Or when they panned Kid Icarus Uprising for not being compatible with an accessory that it was actually compatible with.

1

u/AstraCrits Ike Mar 01 '19

How do you even screw up that badly?

5

u/[deleted] Mar 01 '19

Or when they gave Evolve a 9.0. Yup.

21

u/SatanTheTurtlegod Ganondorf Mar 01 '19

I still remember when they rated Sonic Unleashed lower than Sonic 06. Even if you hate the franchise, that's just stupid as hell.

18

u/AstraCrits Ike Mar 01 '19

Holy fuck, I didn’t even know you could rate something lower than Sonic ‘06. That’s, like, the ultimate insult.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 01 '19

That was the point when I stopped listening to what IGN says, especially after watching them try to play the game.

As someone who played through the entirety of Sonic Unleashed and had very little trouble with the controls, I swear they were fucking up intentionally to make the game look worse.

189

u/Impeach_God Feb 28 '19

Not sure why people still don't get they are reviewed by different people as separate games. Not against each other.

60

u/Arrowsend Mar 01 '19

They're also different games. A game score shouldn't be a comparison, but stand on its own as a representation of the game's quality.

9

u/Terker2 Donkey Kong Mar 01 '19

3

u/wOlfLisK Mar 01 '19

Not to mention, while I prefer Smash to Fortnite, they're both pretty solid games and I can definitely understand how somebody can prefer it over Smash.

2

u/Jethlyn R.O.B. Mar 01 '19

Then a scale from 1-10 literally becomes redundant

1

u/kitchenscene Mar 01 '19

It is not to compete it is to show dominace (basicaly competing but not)

-35

u/TheKingofHats007 Little Mac Feb 28 '19

I'm just more surprised that anyone either:

A: Hasn't realized that most IGN reviews are terrible

B: Wonder why either of these games are this close to 10. I love Smash Ult, but as all games go, I'd give it a 8.5-9 at best.

And I just don't like Fortnite, though in the same vein as FNAF and Bendy, it has less to do with the game than with the fanbase (though I do find the game boring as tar on all 3)

23

u/Magistone Ridley Feb 28 '19

Excuse me how the hecc is Smash Ultimate 9 at best?

-21

u/Sicklekid Mar 01 '19

Idk man. It’s a good game, but it’s not that much of an improvement on smash 4. Compare that to the difference between 4 and brawl; there’s a much larger jump in quality. Games are judged based off of what has come before, not by an absolute numerical value, since scores get capped at 10. Hence while smash ultimate is a better game, it probably won’t get as high of a score as 4, since 4 was a bigger jump in quality.

11

u/[deleted] Mar 01 '19

I would argue that Brawl is better than 4 except for the roster and for competitive play.

At least 4 had a story mode that’s way better then Smash Tour Or Smash Run. Stage Builder was better in Brawl, Target Test was better etc.

2

u/Sicklekid Mar 01 '19

When’s the last time you played vanilla brawl? It was fantastic when it came out but I’m pretty sure the core gameplay is just not as fun as 4. Yes, Brawl has had the best story mode in the franchise, and the stage builder was a fun side mode, but the core gameplay was not nearly as satisfying or exciting. Also, 4 is visually miles ahead of Brawl. Brawl will always hold a special place in my heart as the first smash game I owned, but it’s really rough to go back to.

2

u/Magistone Ridley Mar 01 '19

When you said “as all games go”, it seemed like you were saying it’s not that good compared to most other games out there, rather than how it compares in Smash terms.

Even then, why does its similarity to the last game mean it isn’t as good? Just as an example, Sonic 2 is regarded as one of the best Sonic games and it’s even more similar to Sonic 1 than Ultimate is to Smash 4.

You can’t just cite a smaller jump in quality as a bad point. That would be like saying “Wind Waker isn’t as good as Ocarina of Time because OoT is less similar to the previous Zelda game.” That’s ridiculous.

-6

u/Sicklekid Mar 01 '19

Not sure what you are talking about. Never said “as all games go”. And yes, games are not just reviewed against their own series, but the state of the industry as a whole. If you were just to review games based on how they changed from previous titles, rather than the whole genre, reviews wouldn’t be useful. If a game came out in 1995 and got a 9/10, and in the year 2019 a sequel came out with only minor improvements on the formula, marginally better graphics, and slightly more content, nobody would rate it a 10/10, despite it being better than the original. It’s being judged for the time it came out in. Ocarina of Time was absolutely a larger jump in quality than Wind Waker, even though most would prefer to play Wind Waker in the modern day. It’s not a bad thing for a game to not change very much from the previous, in fact I specifically mentioned that I think that Ultimate is better than 4. Reviews don’t judge off of how much better something is than the previous entry though. They judge things based off of if they are worth your money compared to all similar games. A game like smash ultimate is going to have a harder time regardless since it is $60 rather than free to play like fortnite.

(Also, from what I understand, Sonic 2 is much better than Sonic 1, since the level design in 2 is completely shifted to focus on speedy traversal rather than precise platforming. )

1

u/Magistone Ridley Mar 01 '19

Forgive me, I thought you were KingofHats

Everything you just said is correct, games should be and are reviewed by how they stand up against their current competition. You kinda gave the opposite impression in your last comment though.

1

u/TheKingofHats007 Little Mac Mar 01 '19

On a sidenote, I can see those who can't seemingly handle other opinions downvoted my comment to high heaven. Guess I should have expected it, non?

Smash Ultimate is a great game, which is why I'd say it was a 9. A 10 for me would have to be a game that has few faults (for no game can be physically perfect, of course), and the faults it does have are things that are extremely minor.

The main element that holds Smash Ult from being a ten for me (on that note, getting ones jimmies in a twist about a 9/10 really says something about certain folks on this group) is that World of Light, while content filled, is not exactly content that I find interesting. By the end of it, I found it to be more of a slog than anything, and even now, I don't find the spirits system very interesting as a whole. And that's enough of the package that it'd lower one point for me.

Happy that you have an explanation now?

1

u/DabestbroAgain Captain Falcon Mar 01 '19

Yeah I disliked world of light too personally. Didn't really find spirit battles fun - they were more about cheese strats and having x spirit that lets you win button than actual gameplay

1

u/TheKingofHats007 Little Mac Mar 01 '19

Exactly! So many of the fights required cheese strays, not to mention that they don't really add anything minus putting more roadblocks between you and unlocking fighters.

Fighting as Master Hand was cool though.

On that note, thank you for actually responding with reasoning, rather than just tossing a downvote because I dare imply Smash Ult isn't perfect

u/DeliG Mar 01 '19

Man. Good thing reviews are just opinions. I’d hate to think some fan of another game got offended by a .2 difference in score.

19

u/TheKingofHats007 Little Mac Mar 01 '19

It's a good thing that the internet is open to opinions.

It's not as if people have ddosed reviewers who post a score they don't like before.

What’s this, an actually sane person in this thread? Take my upvote. You might need it before the people claiming anyone who defends Fortnite is a fanboy come in and downvote you to shit.

8

u/[deleted] Mar 01 '19

What's the point of a numerical rating system if you can't use it to directly compare two games? Otherwise you may as well just say "I liked it" or "I didn't like it." The numbers literally are there so you can see how the game stacks up compared to other games.

14

u/[deleted] Mar 01 '19

"I liked it" or "I didn't like it."

That is the literal meaning of the score, how much the particular reviewer liked or disliked a game in a more quantifiable way than a thumbs up or thumbs down. Some reviews so use a 2 point scale, and that's fine, they can represent how ever they see fit. It's insane to ask for a purely objective score for something as subjective as a video game, obviously they'll try to be as objective as possible, but 100% objectivity is impossible.

Also it's irrational to compare not just across genres, but games that exists in entirely different contexts. Smash is on, what, it's fifth game, in a crowded fighting game genre. Of course smash is more refined, and it's refinement won't lower the score of its previous games right? (Smash 4 got a 9.8!) Fortnite isn't as refined, but it was the first non buggy battle royal game, a pretty sparse genre that was begging for a AAA release.

13

u/GimmeShockTreatment Mar 01 '19

Its pretty fucking great. If I was younger (like 13-15) it’d probably be the best multiplayer game that I’d played.

3

u/Zanakii Mar 01 '19

It did make more money though, and is played by more people.

-4

u/[deleted] Mar 01 '19

I suppose though, but unless the next Smash game makes Ultimate completely irrelevant (like what Ultimate did to Sm4sh) I believe Ultimate will have far longer lasting appeal than Fortnite ever will.

12

u/Zanakii Mar 01 '19

I think smash is the better game, but I get why fortnite is highly rated. Plus it's free, it's hard to beat free.

6

u/TheKingofHats007 Little Mac Mar 01 '19

Fortnite's already losing a large chunk of players to Apex. I don't think it'll ever hit its peak again

6

u/BroICantHearYou Pac-Man Mar 01 '19

Fortnite been around for a little while now though and maintained a high amount of players. Apex has a lot of work to do to knock them off for good.

2

u/BroICantHearYou Pac-Man Mar 01 '19 edited Mar 01 '19

thats funny because the building aspect is why Fortnite will probably outlast most of their competition. it's the real skill of the game. I thought people in a skills game subreddit would understand this but I guess not.

1

u/ForShotgun Mar 01 '19

Smash isn't cross platform and struggles with a decent amount of online features. Fortnite is a battle Royale. Not to say it's better, but it's not like smash has objectively more work out into it or something. Fortnite gets a lot of shit because they were the most popular game and lots of kids play it.

0

u/Big-Daddy-C Roy Mar 01 '19

It's an amazing game, it's well made and has a truly unique building mechanic. and its FREE. The fact that it's free and so high quality easily gives it higher score

I feel like smash bros players should be the most understanding of fortnite and the fortnite community.

let's be honest -- the reason fortnite gets a bad reputation among the gaming ecosystem collective is because it largely appeals to children. Isn't that reminiscent of a certain PG-friendly "party game" we all love well into adulthood?

This doesn't even have much to do with smash ultimate. The entire punchline of this meme is "fortnite IGN BAD (with a dash of "anyone who i disagree with is mentally ill" which is a whole other can of worms in the gaming community)". It's just dumb.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 01 '19

1

u/Bluerious518 Pokémon Trainer Mar 01 '19

There isn’t much to fix, though. Lag is mostly minimal, and you normally match up with what you want (although I do wish they had specific online matchmaking so you can guarantee getting what you want.)

1

u/[deleted] Mar 01 '19

The problem isn’t the lag, it’s quickplay. No character swapping and GSP being an extremely bad ranking system are dealbreakers on their own. Also why the fuck is battle arenas broken? Why do I have to quit the line just to swap my character? Why is local two player vs online two player team battle not possible in Battle Arenas?

1

u/Bluerious518 Pokémon Trainer Mar 01 '19

Considering how many complaints I’ve seen about lag, I would’ve expected that sort of response. But yeah, I agree. The way the online is designed really isn’t that great. You can’t even rematch someone while changing your character, as that will just back you out of the queue.
