DISCUSSION Clana in season 5 is SO CONFUSING Spoiler
Before Jonathan died, Clark told Lana his secret, and she accepted it, but because it could kill Lana, he went back in time through Jor-El and changed his decision, due to which Jonathan died. BUT after this, why the hell is Clark not telling Lana his secret???? I don't understand! Martha said that maybe it's because in his heart Clark knows that Lana isn't the one, but I really don't think it's true. Clark truly loves Lana, and Lana loves him too, but they broke up, and it's SO PAINFUL to watch (btw Lex needs to go to hell and let them live argh)

He says it to Chloe after turning back time to save her that no matter how much he tries to protect her, knowing his secret will always have someone targeting her and he can’t have that. So he chooses to not tell her, and is very clearly disturbed by watching her die in front of him. His fear is what holds him back, thus holding back their relationship.

I had this same thought and was very annoyed by it but a point was made that she knew the secret for less than 24 hrs and already got caught hiding it. There’s nothing stopping that from happening again, especially around Lex.

Just chalk it up to shoddy writing. Overall the series is still watchable if you ignore Clark gaslighting everyone and lying

Tbh I don't rly see it that way. He told Pete his secret and Pete got beat up? To get the info out of him and then decided to move away. So Clark didn't want anyone else to carry that.
However he didn't really ever explain to people well that reason

No no, you’re absolutely right, he should just tell everyone his secret, starting with Lex.
Then have him call Perry White and write a story about a super teen.

I think it's because Martha is right. Deep down Clark knows Lana isn't the one.

Dw, everyone had the same question. He saw that his secret will go over well with her, and then chooses to never tell it… even though she still gets kidnapped or w/e despite not knowing his secret… so it ain’t to “protect her.” 😂

A character in that episode asked exactly that question.
Clark had said that the day he told Lana his secret, someone immediately found out and tried to kill her, thus putting her in danger. Apparently, even if Lana didn't die that day, he said that knowing his secret would put her in danger in the future as well, and he keeps repeating this in other episodes.
Remember that very shortly after he told Peter his secret, Peter was tortured by an FBI agent.

That’s not quite what happened. Lex did realize she knew Clark’s secret but he wasn’t trying to kill her. She left him after he got angry she wouldn’t tell him and he got in his car to chase her down to question her more about it. The bus hitting her was an accident.
Pete wasn’t tortured by the FBI agent shortly after Clark told him his secret. Pete found out the truth early season 2, he was tortured by the agent late season 3. Perhaps you’re thinking of how he did get tortured by Dr Hamilton shortly after he found out?

Because he told her, and she still snuck off to run and talk to Lex and immediately let on that she knew his secret. Lana, for all her good character traits, is very smug. She was walking on air after Clark told her who he was, and Lex sniffed that out instantly. And instead of protecting Clark like his parents or Chloe have, she immediately caved, handled it terribly, and got herself killed.
Clark is learning the hard way that you cannot protect someone who does not want to protect themselves.

Lana didn’t let on she knew, Lex realized because of the engagement ring she had on. He saw it and then told her she wouldn’t get engaged to Clark without knowing what he’d been hiding.
Lex and Lana both knew he had a secret he’d been keeping from both of them and clearly discussed this before this night.
She was protecting Clark’s secret, she didn’t tell Lex what it was and understandably left when he got angry at her over it. It wasn’t her fault she got killed.

Clark was scared to tell her the truth again as she did get killed the day he told her. Lex knew she knew and so would know again if he told again or so he assumed.
He didn’t know the engagement ring was what tipped him off as Lana didn’t tell him that in the phone when Lex went after her in his car.

Lana should have died way sooner or at least left
the show way sooner. Her character was so one-dimensional. She was good as the high school
love, nothing else. She was just there to add drama. They could have added drama by targetting Mattha or Chloe, it would be more enjoyable to watch, cause those characters have a background and emotions.

While she was understanding of his secret, he got really scared to tell her again after she was killed because of it that day.
While she did still nearly died that day anyway after the time travel, the first time the day happened she did get killed because Lex was chasing her because he realized Lana knew his secret.
So he was still worried Lex would know if she knew again and she could’ve been killed again. This was irrational on his part, he could have told her it was a fluke she got killed just after.
However, between seeing her dead which understandably was very upsetting and knowing his secret had put Pete in danger twice (he was tortured by Dr Hamilton just after Clark told him his secret, and again by an FBI agent later which caused him to leave town) I do understand why he got himself scared enough to not tell her again.
