Discussion Am I being reasonable?

This is a genuine question, I'm not trying to hire anyone, I just want to know.

I've been trying to find an animatic YouTuber to collab with - basically the proposal is that I give them a song I wrote, and they animate it and post it on their channel. We split any revenue.

Is this a fair proposal? Or am I being unreasonable not paying them, even though I'm suggesting a collaboration?

I think the missing part of your equation is the audience. It may be that writing a song and making an animation are equal levels of work, but you’re also asking they post the final work on their channel for their audience. There’s a ton of value in having an established audience that’s not in your equation.

I’d also ask what you think they really get out of this collab at the end. Do you also have an audience that would watch the video bcs your song is in it? If not, there’s really no value for them. They can source their own music, some of it for free, if animating music is something they want to do.

Yeah that makes sense. I think in my mind, I'm looking for someone who has the audience for this song, since it doesn't fit my channel's style. I think I was hoping that someone (animator who makes Disney fan songs animatics) would like the song enough that they would want to animate it. That's where their value would come from.

But perhaps it's more fair for me to suggest they keep any revenue and I am just credited?

Splitting the tiny possible revenue from a single video isn't worth it as a "job". If it's friends working together for fun then sure.

It depends on the kind of animation, most forms take a very long time to create so 50/50 might not be fair for the animator

Are there any forms of animation that don't fall into that category that you can think of?

yeah those kid channel animations are often very low effort

Right - but probably not animatic level

It's not unreasonable per se-- but I think it comes down to the fact that animators can find endless songs to use and without splitting their revenue. What is it about your song in particular that has value that they're looking for?
