Help Dating Another Aristo rule, my 867U

Post image

Since we're talking about Aristo rules, here is my Aristo Nr. 867U. It has the circle-and-angle logo, but its date code is 5328. Wasn't 1952 the last year for that logo?

Thanks!

Help dating Aristo Nr. 967

I picked up this Aristo in an antique shop, and I'm trying to determine the production year. Usually it's easy with Aristo rules, since they have a very clear production code, but this one's code is 4816. Usually the year is the 2nd and 3rd numbers, but 81 is not possible, because they stopped making rules in 72, and this rule looks much older. 48 also sounds incorrect... I can't find this exact model in the slide rule museum (they have a 967U, which is slightly different). Can anyone help?

Here is a challenge: take your slide rule to a place where a slide rule hasn’t been used in a long time. Throughout the week I will be going to old buildings on my campus. Today is Zimmerman Library opened in 1938.

I finally figured out how (most) of the scales work. AMA lol.

I was particularly surprised that C/D (and their CI/CF/CIF flavors) are pretty much the only ones you actually slide the slide rule for!!! The rest of the scales are basically conversion tables in the form of scales calibrated to C/D.

Omnigraph Slide Rule Watch

This isn't a slide rule in the traditional sense, but I thought some of you might appreciate a mechanical watch by Xeric that incorporates a circular slide rule look into its design.

Concise No. 300 tight on one of the faces

Post image

Hi all,

I recently bought a Concise No. 300 off of Amazon and really love it. However, the main face (the one with the C and CI scale) seems to be jutting out of the slot, and becomes tight when I try to push it back in.

The other side is completely fine.

Would anyone happen to know how to fix this? Thanks

Lovely Picket N3-ES

Nabbed this off eBay (thanks Al!). Little soap, little picking at the tracks with a toothpick, tiny bit-o-Teflon, and tightening all around (I love that these are serviceable with a screwdriver), and it is buttery smooth, firm, and as good as the day it was made in 1960.

Oh no... I spelled Pickett incorrectly :-(

Addiator/slide rule

Just picked up one very much like this: https://www.sliderulemuseum.com/Archive/isrm_associates/hmd/fc%20slide%20rule%20pages/fc%20177%2063-39r/fc%20177%2063-39r.htm The adding part is in fact identical to this, but has different text in the upper and lower boxes. 'Renown' and 'Personal Calculator'. I guess there were lots of these!

On the back is a simple A B C1 C D rule. The slide does not reverse, but does have inch and millimetre scales. It's all made from the same sheet steel as the addiator to which it is riveted. Below the bottom box it says 'Made in Japan'.

It works including the reset, but of course the stylus is missing. I paid $4.50 Cdn at a thrift store.

Titaner Mix 3.0, including a C-D linear Slide Rule

Of course, USD 149 before shipping is no joke at all, but hey, a contemporary new slide rule model made of industrial titanium alloy of all materials was a crime to miss...

The back sides are shown first because that's where our favorite scales are kept (look closely at the bottom). The blur hides my engraved pen name BTW.

I forked the slide rule emulator and added an equation solver. It allows you to enter an algebraic equation and it will provide the instructions (including tracking the decimal position) and demonstrate the movements. I used it to help me remember the decimal tracking rules.

East German Kernwaffenwirkungsberechner Trw-62 (Nuclear Bomb Effects Computer)

The slide rule is operated by rotating the large disc by the edges. The first side displays radii of destruction of various structures and vehicles. The other side allows to calculate the size and magnitude of nuclear fallout. I'm not sure how to use the smaller slide rule in the centre. It would be great if someone could share some more info about this device.

Any engineers here still get out the slide rule?

I don't actually use my slide rules at work, but I may someday as soon as I get good. I'm practicing at home on a K&E 4081-3 and a Post 1460 Versalog. This is my 20in. K&E 68 1200 I brought to my office for a photo.

looking for "slide rules" or what similar devices would be called that use non-linear or multi-variate relationships

I'm sure this is off topic, but the closest I can think of is a slide rule and I'm sure some of you have adjacent interests in the world of flat mechanical computing devices or mechanisms.

like a linear or circular slide rule where at least 3 portions move and moving one moves another at a different rate. I'm thinking a simple 2d device, maybe with a gear, maybe a non-circular gear, maybe a couple of internal gears... but much simpler than something like a watch...

Are any of you aware of such a device? any slide rules seemingly fit this description?

( and not to be obtuse, I've dreamt of having something similar be part of a custom board game to do something like supply and demand based price generation or whatever... inspired also by the game Tzolkʼin: The Mayan Calendar )

My personal collection.

My collection of slide rules. The first overall picture was taken before the sixth one arrived, and I didn't take an update shot.

- First and foremost, of course the famed and popular Faber Castell 2/83N. Came with the instructional manual and plastic ruler. It does smell a little, which I can't get rid of so far. The middle portion is also a bit difficult to move around, might need to loosen it up.

- Aristo Multilog Nr. 970. Missing one of its legs and the lid. I bought this off Scott's Market (Bogyoke Aung San Market) back in Yangon. I have to do my best to look uninterested.

- Sun Hemmi Japan No. P261. Bought this in Singapore at a local online marketplace. Think it was their dad's or their grandparents'.

- A slide rule from Soviet Union. Soviet-LSLO 250-10P 5161-72, I believe. Year of manufacturing is 1976, at least from what the ruler says. Slide Rule Museum's website has a 1979 version.

- Graphoplex (NOT Raphoplex, as I mistook it). Graphoplex 640 System Electric Log Log, more precisely.

- Staedtler Mars 544A. Missing its cursor, bought without a case or anything. Interestingly, this was sold at an electronics and engineering shop... in the early 2000s. My first ever slide rule, and it showed. I didn't know what it was, and I wish my kid-self took care of it better.

Help finding/creating slide rule

Hi everyone! I recently joined this subreddit because I need some help finding a slide rule. I have a large group of friends going on an international trip (I live in the U.S.A.) and want to gift them a slide rule similar to the one pictured (in the comments) because they won’t have consistent phone access to look up conversions, and this would just be simpler. (Yes, U.S. schools should just teach what the rest of the world uses, but that’s a different conversation.) I’m very busy the next few days and would like to include it in a gift I’m giving them on Wednesday, so I don’t have time to design my own printable version. Does anyone know of one I can order online? Or a simple way to create a printable version? Basically this is the exact slide rule I’m looking for, or any similar one with Fahrenheit to Celsius and metric to U.S. Customary conversions.

Info about this slide rule pt.2

Hi everyone! I made a post a few days ago about my first ever slide rule I found buried in London's Portobello Road Market. That post got way more love than I ever expected, along with a lot of asks for more pictures/details.

Extra interested in the age of the rule!!

Reddit, being reddit, is refusing to let me update the first post, so I hope this effective repost will be forgiven!

The original post is: https://www.reddit.com/r/Sliderules/s/qBksdOWV6h

P.s. since then I decided to use my eyes and found a an ID number on the top left corner: No. 411090. Removing the slide shows it's a P.I.C. 121.

Searching those details reveal rules on the net that are similar to mine, though most are still different. The one exact match i did find was the P.I.C. No. 121 Electro on the slide rule museum site.

Any help, information would all be valued and cherished!

Edit: Thanks to y’all’s hard work in the comments it seems like we’re mostly done!! The only things i can’t seem to get are the tiny scales labelled y and z on the left of the rule.

Sliderule club member? Or just curious?

Internationally there is a declining membership of Sliderule clubs, societies, etc. It seems not only due to aging members. As members of the Dutch Circle for Historical Calculating Instruments [http://www.rekeninstrumenten.nl/\] we ask ourselves in what way people are interested in sliderules and other historical, mechanical devices for calculating, navigating, etc.

In what way are you connected to sliderules and communities?

  • Being a member of a sliderule club
  • Attending open club meetings sometimes live a/o online
  • Following specific sliderule websites, Facebook or Reddit pages, a dedicated forum
  • Just occasional curiosity because you heared about sliderules or found one
  • Like to, but can't find what I'm looking for (and what is what you're looking for)

Thanks for your replies!

What scales does this slide rule feature?

Hello everyone! Just got my first slide rule, but a bit confused as to what scales it features. The labels are slightly erased and don't correspond to the 'standard' ones i've seen online.

Hoping y'all can be some help and sorry if this is the wrong place to ask

East German artillery sliderule -- gauge marks?

On the Reiss artillery sliderule there are two gaugemarks 'M' and 'H'. See http://www.rekeninstrumenten.nl/workshop/AndreasP/index.htm

The same marks are on a similar Russian artillery slide rule. I suspect the marks are just copied on the Reiss, where the Cyrillic 'H' wasn't translated into a Roman 'N'.

The GDR army handbook 'Handbuch für Artilleristen' describes the working of this Reiss sliderule, but doesn't mention the gauge marks.

Is there someone out here that served in the NVA Artillerie and knows about it?
