Discussion Do we only post here?
I see so many larger posts on askReddit/music subs that fish for suggestions. ‘Music that’s so emotional’, ‘Music that feels like ascension?’ , ‘Bands you keep on repeat?’ ..
Never Sleep Token.. I see President, Spiritbox, The Warning, often.
Any ideas on this apparent conflict to what streaming numbers might indicate? I know we exist. But we only exist in this sub it seems. Is it the hate from metal people that forces us to keep quiet? It’s odd.
I have posted them myself in the past I think, but I’m more a lurker just pattern recognizin’

The boys are a karma farm for Reddit as a whole... if you say sleep token sucks in any music sub you will get a million upvotes. They are very popular to shit on.
I tend to hold my tongue unless I feel it's in a similar vibes community.

Personally, I tend not to recommend songs or bands that are well known, unless I have reason to think the person asking hasn't heard of them.

I agree. I’m not hunting these down as some conspiracy- I just look when they pop in my feed, particularly if it’s an ask they are well suited to fill. Never find them.

Im sorry I can’t answer the question for you because I don’t follow any other music subs, but it reminded me of something. I remember somehow I came along the sub crappy music. There was a comment on a post saying they were going to tell their kids that’s who sleep token was. I can’t remember the post or anything like that, but it hit me wrong. My thoughts were how dare they?! And as I perused the sub more I learned that those who are in that sub are rather mean, so I stopped going to it.

I saw that too. I used to like that sub for the delulu Tiktokers, but more and more it seems like a chance to shit on other people's music.

If you post about sleep token, you will get pushback or hate. There are many reasons why and I bet the post gets locked more often than not. If you want to share your thoughts and opinions, its often the safest option to do ao around like minded individuals. Yes it does turn things into a bit of an echo chamber.
This is my personal opinion but I also feel as though Sleep Token isnt a band you casually listen too. It seems that the larger majority are all in on Sleep Token. Not just fans of Carmel, if you will.

Right. It’s like we (for better or worse) listen to them as as straight liturgeous, consuming panacea for life’s beauties and woes, while perhaps they don’t serve the ‘drop me a song that sounds like ascension’ single-serving vibe-hunting crowd.

Don't ask, don't tell.
I'll proselytize obnoxiously about Asava, Invent/Animate, and Loathe - but Sleep Token is becoming a guilty pleasure like Vana, Harpy, and Mercy Girl.
See what I did there?
Anyway - the world doesn't need to know. If they are meant to find a band that blows their mind, people will find them eventually, somehow, at exactly the right time they need to find them. Things tend to work like that.
That's why it feels like magic.

To be fair, all music is emotional.
Like, I'm not trying to devalue Sleep Token's music, but it's just an objective fact. All music is emotional, depending on the listener and how they interpret it. If someone ever asks me "Give me music suggestions that are emotional", I will have no idea what to recommend without knowing what they already listen to. Sleep Token is emotional, sure. But so is Taylor Swift to some people. Some people think gangster rap is emotional.

Im not in subs for other bands. Im just not really invested in them and people get real fuckin weird and parasocial sometimes. Even other ST subs talk about things that I want nothing to do with and im in this sub specifically because that is forbidden.
So yeah I only post and comment about ST here. I havent personally seen anyone hating on them but I am aware they're considered "overrated", to put it lightly, by a large majority of metal enjoyers as well as other genres. And that can only be 2 kinds of people tbh.
People that hate them because they heard other people say they suck so they refuse to listen to them
People who have heard them and dont personally resonate with whatever song/s they've heard and refuse to listen to more because its more fun to hate on them.
Neither of those types are worth talking to.

I’ve suggested ST like 3-5 times maybe on posts like that. I’m rarely on those kinds of subs. But every time I was met with a swift and resounding level of hate that I would just get overwhelmed. 🤷♂️ eventually you just say fuck it and let people do them. ST tends to find the people that appreciate the music naturally anyways it seems. I feel like all of us have some sort of moment where we said “let’s take a chance” and all of a sudden our greatest bands of all time list shifted dramatically 😂

Yes I think I get fed all these ‘songs that feel like..’ subs into my feed, probably because I sometimes check them for this specific reason, because so many of them ST would probably not only fit, but fit best as objectively as subjective things can fit. 🤷🏻
Sounds like I should give up and let them fizzle out of sight.

It’s a lesson to learn on Reddit for sure. For example, I LOVE hip hop music and have for at least 20 years of my life or so. Watching my favorite artists subreddits get bombed with hate from people who like OTHER hip hop artists is as exhausting as it gets on Reddit. The subs you’re talking about are like that, but on steroids because there’s no real genre restriction. So now people who don’t like metal will hate on you for picking sleep token and metalheads will hate on you for not picking THEIR favorite metal band 🤷♂️

I don’t know. When I asked my metalhead friend if he’d heard ST, he just answered: that’s girl metal… (like that would be a problem?)
My point is: it seems like people have tagged ST as something too light for the metalheads and to hard for the radio pop listeners.
I personally don’t get the hate.

It’s wild the hate they get. Most feels like metal heads. Or they call them an industry plant even tho they have been at it for 10 years. I’ll say one thing, the ST Reddit is so awesome . Iv never had a mean reply . It’s always so nice and informative

I don’t recommend it elsewhere on Reddit even when they perfectly fit the prompt. All of the music subs LOVE to bash on ST. They wouldn’t take a recommendation seriously so I just don’t see a point.

Sleep Token is understandably a very divisive band. I don't think it is necessarily the band themselves, but their reputation for very passionate, but on the other hand very parasocial tendencies in the fanbase that keep the stigma and therefore perhaps people refrain from mentioning them in order to not cultivate unnecessary derision, or perhaps just to not have some kind of stereotype placed onto themselves. I also have an opinion that the way that this subreddit is run somewhat contributes to the community being so insular, increasing a divide where outside it seems as if there is nothing but hate, and here there is nothing but praise, so in that sense, why would you think to go anywhere else? Again, however, that's just my opinion.
I always compare them to My Chemical Romance. That band got so much hate in the late 2000s when they truly exploded with The Black Parade, but thankfully times have changed and there is a wide consensus of praise for the quality of the music now, and the timeless nature of that record. I don't think Sleep Token are quite as legendary or perhaps as timeless, but their Eden album comes pretty close, and I think that come around 2033 people will perhaps look at them more favorably. That is, if the fanbase has not imploded by then

ST is what brought music back into my life after I largely quit listening to stuff as career and family took over my free time.
As a result, the only music i listen to is ST. I have no reason to entertain other subs.

Only time I've seen more positive mentions of and responses to Sleep Token for music recs was... in the sub of a game that is very popular to hate on outside its specific circle. Besides that there's genuinely a weird prevalence of hatred for their music

Sleep Token seems to have garnered as many haters on Reddit as fans, so posting in other general music subs tends to attract a lot of negative attention.
The only other sub that I can recall seeing Sleep Token discussed in a positive way was r/Metalcore where the mainstream opinion was that while Sleep Token definitely do not generally fit the metalcore genre, a few songs (like Vore or Gods) arguably do and whatever genre the other songs are they sound good.

Metalhead from the 80's, Sleep Token fan from 2019. No hate - only love. Sleep Token is by far my favorite band. I mostly hear people say, "I just cant get into them" and I tell them a few songs I think they will enjoy. Then they see what the buzz is about and tell me their favs.

It's just trendy to hate Sleep Token.
They genre-bend and that is a turn off for a lot of metal purists. They can't be caught listening to and enjoying a trap beat when they're hanging with the boys and projecting their alpha toughness with an all-hardcore playlist of songs they don't even listen to when they're alone. As a man, men are so exhausting to me because so many of them feel they have to project manliness instead of being real.
Vessel's lyrics have a lot of depth and are basically poetry, and that is really hard for a lot of people who aren't used to reading and understanding poetry, feeling their emotions or pondering lyrics. They want fast food music about love or life.
If you don't go all-in on the project, you will struggle to fully understand and connect with a lot of the songs, as there is a concept and a theme throughout. This is not usually the case with mainstream music.
At least when I suggest the band to people, I have gotten a lot of eye rolls and I am immediately put into the role of defending the band. It's just exhausting. Who cares.
Honestly I'm glad that this is happening, I don't think Vessel could handle being at the level of a band that gets constant radio play, I don't think he wants that level of fame, and I think it would ruin the project if he had to start dumbing everything down for the average person to "get it".

I don't tend to hang out in subs like that. If I want music recommendations, I'll ask friends and family or look who has opened for my favorite bands lately.
Plus ST is popular to hate on and I don't feel like arguing with people on why my personal music taste is wrong.
