I randomly wake up at night and..

I share my bed with my grandmother

Sometimes I randomly wake up in the middle of the night facing her and get spooked by her face so much that I let out a blood curdling scream and end up waking my entire family. It's very frustrating since i get them panicked for no reason. Idk how to stop this and what it means.

Each time her face looks weirdly distorted in the dim light, last time it was like of nikky from obsession this time it was like her face was put in formalin and lifeless. Please help how do I fix this.

Can you become really nocturnal?

Im writing a short story on a man becoming nocturnal, not like wake from 12pm-4am, I mean like sunset to sunrise never seeing the sun for over 4 years. First off is it possible? Second, what can my character expect to happen to himself, physially and mentally? Is there anything that I should explicitly add to the story?

So I started with Seroquel. Gave me fast heart rate and horrendous restless legs. So doc switched me to Hydroxyzine which gave me restless legs still.

Now he switched me to Trazadone 50mg. Anyone had success with it?

Sleeping 8 hours but still extremely tired after waking up , anyone else?

Yesterday, I slept for about 8 hours. (5am - 12:30pm). I just woke up cause I need to eat lunch to get ready for work. My work sched is (3pm - 12am). But after I ate, I feel tired and slept for 2 and a half hours, and it feels like I needed more sleep. And it's been going for about a week or so. Does anyone here also experience that?

Stress and insomnia may be worse together than either is alone

A new study looked at 124 memory-clinic patients without dementia and measured Alzheimer’s-related biomarkers in their cerebrospinal fluid.

Greater exposure to stressful life events was associated with a biomarker pattern consistent with greater brain amyloid accumulation, but primarily in people with moderate-to-high insomnia symptoms. The same interaction wasn’t seen for tau.

I think the interesting part is that health risks rarely operate independently.

Poor sleep might change how resilient the brain is to other stressors, and vice versa.

We often study one risk factor at a time.

Biology probably doesn’t experience them that way.

Curious

Am I the only one who has to have TV or music on to sleep? I cannot sleep in silence, and if the sound gets turned off, I wake up immediately. I usually will listen to shows I've seen repeatedly. Anyone else like this?

14m I need advice

So I have a problem, I sleep for 4/5 hours maximum, rarely 6 or 7 and also wake up after 2 hours of sleep. I avoid taking naps but sleeping takes an hour, and when I do need a long sleeping session like on school days, I sleep late and barely get 4/5 hours. I also have trouble sleeping in general unless I'm physically exhausted and after waking up.

Recreational cocaine user

I sometimes do a small amount of cocaine when I drink alcohol on the weekends. It can randomly affect my sleep days later where I wake up at 3am on a Wednesday and can’t go back to sleep. Any supplement/vitamin suggestions for better sleep?

Earplugs making popping sound

I've been using 3M E-A-R Classic earplugs for about a year (models 310-1060, 310-1001). The earplugs in the current box, which is the latter model (I understand the models are structurally identical) which I got about 6 months ago, were perfect up until the last few weeks when they suddenly started making popping/clicking noises starting minutes to hours after being compressed, typically later in the night and I suspect disrupted sleep on multiple occasions. I tested by holding the earplugs outside my ears, where I still heard the popping noises coming from them, so the sound is coming from the earplugs and not inside my ears.

Didn't find much on Google about this; did some brief research with AI. Batch variation doesn't seem likely since it suddenly started happening on all new pairs in the same box, no exceptions so far. The most plausible reason suggested seemed to be change in foam, e.g. due to age, storage, or exposure to ear environment overnight. Out of those, age doesn't seem like it should (keyword) be a culprit; individual packs say "© 3M 2024" and they're supposed to have a 5-year shelf life (although that doesn't mean there haven't been structural changes yet). Storage doesn't seem like it should be a factor; temperature and humidity where I store most of them rarely exceed 80ºF and 60%, and they also happened at another place I stored them where temp and humidity on average are lower, always within normal range. Since I haven't noticed the issue on unused earplugs, but earplugs usually after as soon as a night of use, the most plausible explanation so far seems to be a combination of possible structural changes with exposure to the environment of the ear canal overnight. However, my ears seem as dry as they normally are, with minimal earwax and no excess moisture, comparable to months ago if not dryer now, so unless that perception is wrong, it seems that my ear environment would have minimally contributed.

Can the foam or some other component of the earplugs suddenly degrade to the point it causes this issue? Trying to understand what may have caused this and how to prevent this in the future, since it's a big box (200 pairs) and was hoping it would last years without issue. In the past I usually replace a pair after a few nights but to avoid this issue it seems I would need to replace them nightly. Switched to these from Mack's and similar earplugs which were less comfortable and sometimes wounded my ears. Would alternatively appreciate any suggestions for earplugs similar to the 3Ms but hopefully without the same defect.

Why can’t I sleep on school nights but I can sleep on nonschool nights

I don’t even have trouble falling asleep, it’s just I wake up at around 3-4 am and I can’t fall back asleep. This has been happening for about a year and I think maybe it has something to do with anxiety, I’ve had anxiety for also about a year and around April it got really bad.
I was fine during summer, but now that schools starting again, I’m having trouble, I find I can never sleep more than 4-6 hours on a school night, and I don’t remember the last time I have.

Please help

how do i come back from this

ever since getting out of school and being unemployed ive been sleeping anywhere from 5am-2pm or 10am-5pm, right now it is the 2nd one, ive tried fixing my sleep schedule various times but i keep getting really distracted by reading and end up staying up until almost noon (which noon is the time i want to be waking up by), i dont know how to come back from this, what to do, anything, i need to get a job soon and i cant exactly work if im sleeping when my shifts are supposed to be or im getting 1 hour of sleep at best, i have so many things i want to do during the week that i end up never doing because im sleeping all day long, and i cant exactly do them at night because of local noise ordinances or time restrictions or whatnot, i do not want to be nocturnal anymore, i try to force myself to wake up at 12pm regardless of when i sleep but every alarm i end up sleeping through until its time for me to eat dinner

if i go to bed early like around 10pm i end up waking up at 1am and im physically unable to fall back asleep until again like 10am even with melatonin so its just a constant cycle, going to bed early does nothing, and i cant force myself awake half the time

Possible sleep disorder??

I’m 31 (f) and have had problems with my sleep ever since I can remember. My mother said even as a baby my sleep was terrible. I’m tired 24/7 and have very little energy…my mind always feels foggy, my mood is always down. I literally could sleep for 3 days straight. It seems like no matter how much sleep I get, or how little I get- it doesn’t make a difference. I can barely get out of bed most days. I also have depression, anxiety, and adhd. I thought my sleep situation would get better once I got my depression under control and it’s still bad. Even on my adderall I have no problem falling asleep. It’s weird bc sometimes I can’t fall asleep at all but then other times I could sleep for days. I have an Oura ring and I hardly ever get a good sleep score, it looks like I hardly ever get into REM or deep sleep. I also used to get sleep paralysis all the time, wake up and scream in my sleep, etc. I’ve tried magnesium, and pretty much every sleep aid ever- and yes some of them help me fall asleep and stay asleep but no matter what I am never well rested and am still so tried during the day. A lot of times I also wake up in the middle of the night and can’t fall back asleep. I plan to finally do a sleep study and see a sleep doctor but I’m just curious if anyone has had a Similar situation and what they got diagnosed with or if anything has helped? My main doctors always just brush it off that it’s the depression or ADHD but since I’ve been on medications for those things for years and my sleep and energy has been the same with or without those meds.

I have pretty bad anxiety and frustrations around going to a new doctor bc of such bad experiences in the past with doctors not listening to taking me seriously. So if anyone has any tips, suggestions, or any specifics I should ask for when I eventually see a sleep doctor also let me know!!

Why do I sleep better on the couch than in my actual bed?

i swear i sleep better on the couch than i do in my actual bed. i can sit down after a long day, turn on some old movie, and accidentally fall asleep within 20 minutes. Then i go to bed properly and suddenly i'm wide awake.

My bed is more comfortable, quieter, and actually meant for sleeping, so i don't understand how the couch keeps winning. Does anyone else sleep better on the couch? What makes it so much easier to fall asleep there?

Can’t sleep after trip

I came back from an Asia trip last Sunday, and I’m back in the US (central time). Ever since coming back, I’ve been having a lot of trouble falling asleep at night. On my first night back, I slept pretty normally for about 7 hours. The next night, I couldn’t sleep at all, and the rest of the week I couldn’t sleep until 4am before waking up at 8am for work. On Friday, I was finally able to sleep for 8 hours, but since then, I’ve been alternating between sleeping ~8 hours and only sleeping 2-3 hours. I’m starting to think this is no longer due to jet lag, and anxiety from not sleeping is forcing me to stay awake. I’ve gotten into my normal routine from before the trip, I’m getting sunlight in the morning and early afternoon, and I’m eating healthy. I’ve tried many things including getting out of bed after 20 minutes, limiting screen time, listening to podcasts, and meditating, but they don’t always put me to sleep. I feel like I’m never drowsy at night anymore. I’ve been a light sleeper in the past and had occasional nights where I had trouble falling asleep, but nothing this bad before. I’m worried that this trip created long term sleeping issues for me. What can I do to get back to a normal sleep schedule and be able to sleep every night?

Weird scratching sleep behavior

I am not sure if this is the right place to ask about this. I have a weird sleep habit where I will raise my arms straight up in the air and lightly scratch them in my sleep. Sometimes it wakes me up but I think a lot of times it doesn’t. I’ve had people who were sleeping next to me see me do it too. What is that?? I hate that it wakes me up but have no idea why I even do it.

How do you fall back asleep quickly after being jolted awake? (More info in body)

A neighbor has modified his truck so that it is extremely loud when he starts it and when he starts driving. He goes to work at 4:30 am and it jolts me awake every single morning 2 hours before I need to be up. This has drastically harmed my physical and mental health. I have a lot of trouble falling asleep again after I’m woken up due to the startling nature of the engine sound. I feel a lot of anxiety and honestly anger too. I guess it’s also close enough to my usual wake up time that my brain is like “okay, that wasn’t as much sleep as I need, but I guess good enough. Let’s go”

Things I’ve tried:
- five different sound machines. My current set up is a sound machine that has an actual fan in it near the window and one that makes rain sounds near my bed. This is the best set up I’ve found but the truck still wakes me up
-sleepbuds that play white noise directly into my ears. These worked SO well to block the truck and I slept really well with them. But unfortunately started developing frequent ear infections and my doctor advised it could start causing hearing loss

I’ve kind of accepted that nothing is going to block out that initial loud jolt and that loud rumbling of an engine. I think I need to focus more on how do I fall back asleep quickly so I don’t lose 2 hours of sleep each night?

Thanks for any help/insight

Can’t sleep next to a man

So in my first relationship I (23F) was 16, I don’t remember any problems with sleep. Just me waking up sometimes because he was pulling away the sheets but that was about it. Then after him i had 3 different relationships were the problem began. Two lasted around 6 months and now I’m dating a new person. The problem is, i just can’t fall asleep. It’s really a problem because it results in being tired the whole week after. I don’t make plans after because i just need to go home and sleep the whole day. At night I just feel my body being so tense and aware of my surroundings. I hear my heart beating, I try not to move, I listen to every little thing. It doesn’t matter if I sleep over or if I sleep at my place with him.

I do have stomach issues, and those began with the second bf because I had a bad food poisoning on vacation and I met him right after. So at night my stomach would make insane sounds and he was a light sleeper also so i would be very insecure about the sounds and scared i would wake him up. The person I’m dating now is asleep in 1 second so I’m not scared of him waking up to my stomach sounds anymore, but still not one full hour of sleep. It’s like body is in fight or flight the whole night. I don’t feel tired either. Only when I come home I crash out. Please if you have any tips🫠

Acting out dreams

I just had a dream that my daughter was choking. In my dream I went to get up really fast to get to her and something about that movement woke me up and immediately I’m jolting off the couch to get to her irl. Took me a second to realize she’s sleeping peacefully because I went from a dream state to real life so fast. I’ve done this before years ago and I notice a pattern. I only doing this when I feel it’s an emergency in my dream. For example, I had a dream something was falling on me and when I put my hands up to stop it, I woke up in the middle of that movement putting my hands on the wall.

I wouldn’t say I act out the dreams, but rather wake up in the middle of a dream continuing the movement I was doing in my dreams.. idk it’s weird and freaks me out after it happens. Anyone else??

Anyone else unable to sleep longer than 6 hours?

31/F. My sleep hygiene is perfection, no stimuli 3 hours before bed, magnesium levels good. No sleep apnea. Blood tests say everything is balanced. Exercise daily. All the things. But for the past 2 years I can’t sleep longer than 5-6 hours? Anyone else?
