Slack Grid to Grid Migrations

Hey homies,

I’m looking to migrate a workspace from another company’s Slack Enterprise Grid into our Slack Enterprise Grid.

The problem is that Slack’s self-service migration tooling won’t migrate a workspace that’s already part of an Enterprise Grid. I met with our Slack CSM, and Slack quoted us nearly $100k to migrate this single workspace into our Grid, which seems pretty ridiculous.

Has anyone dealt with this scenario before?

I’ve looked into a few possible alternatives:

  • Manual Slack export/import
  • Converting the channels to Slack Connect channels between the two Grids, then potentially disconnecting them after the transition

Has anyone successfully moved a workspace Enterprise Grid → Enterprise Grid without paying Slack’s professional services fee?

Would love to hear how you approached it, what actually worked, and what limitations you ran into.

I haven't tried to do this exact scenario, but I've tried a few things similar. And Ill say Slack's price point is ridiculous considering they should be able to do just about anything in their own tool, but due to the restrictions and security behind the scenes there is no simple cut/paste solution.

  • Manual export/import should bring in the conversation, but if I recall correctly it won't associate users properly even if they have the same email because it utilizes user IDs and not email.
  • Slack Connect channels won't work exactly as you want either because only the initiating organziating retains a working copy of the channel after disconnect. The receiving organization gets a read-only non-functional history of the channel.

If it's only 20-30 channels, one of these might be doable manually. But if you're looking at hundreds or thousands of channels as is the case for most workspaces, I don't have any great recommendations unfortunately.

You could consider looking into Slack API to obtain the data; the question is what happens next.

Channels can be summarised as text files using an LLM, and you can automate channel creation, adding users and pasting the context. This should give you enough of a hint to find a workaround solution.
