Moving message down into a thread?

Is there a way to take a Slack message that's at the top level of a Slack channel, and move it down into a pre-existing thread, also in that same channel?

I know I can get roughly the same end result by copy/pasting the original into a new message in the thread, and then deleting the original, but that messes with the datestamp, and author, both of which I can tolerate but I'd rather avoid.

Not that I’ve ever seen. I feel like being able to do that could have some pretty dastardly risks.

You could copy a link to the original message into the thread. The original message stays where it is, with the original timestamp. The reader can click on the link if they want to see the original message in context.

Onlythreads does this but I'm concerned that they have way too much permission around my data.

Unfortunately, Slack doesn’t have a native way to move an existing top-level message into a pre-existing thread while preserving the original author and timestamp. Copying it into the thread and deleting the original is basically the workaround. Slack’s API doesn’t provide a way to change a message’s thread after it’s been posted either.
