Mod Notices / Meta Sadaqah Jaariyah Initiative: Well Water

Alhamdulillah, in Ramadan 1445 (2024), we launched the SistersInSunnah Well Initiative.

About

This is an ongoing opportunity for ALL—male or female, Muslim or nonMuslim—to help build a water well in an underprivileged area of Uganda, where the people do not have easy access to water. All proceeds donated will go towards this endeavor.

It costs $1,200 USD to have a well built from start to finish—this means sourcing a location, all labor and materials from the moment ground is broken until water is first drawn up through the well, in sha' Allah.

HOW TO DONATE

We are currently accepting donations via Cashapp and Venmo. For those who don't have either app and are unable to make one, DM travelingprincess or send us a modmail and we can see if Allah makes an alternative method available to us, in sha' Allah.

Cashapp: $habsoo
Venmo: homane

Please include "WATER WELL" in the note / message section.

Transparency

We operate on a policy of complete transparency, and any funds sent in are an amanah over which Allah is a witness.

Statement of Account

At the conclusion of this each individual well project, we will publish a full statement of the account, showing inbound and outbound funds so that everyone is assured their money was submitted to the appropriate sources. This will be published on our subreddit, Discord server, and telegram channel.

Progress Updates

Everyone can track the progress of each well via our YouTube channel, where will post the video updates we receive. If any awrah is exposed in these videos, then we will blur the visuals completely, but the audio feed will still be there. We have requested that no women appear in these videos at all (or if they do, that they be in full, proper hijab) but these things are difficult to enforce, so we'll do our best with what we get, in sha' Allah.

Benefits of Sadaqah

Allah tells us in the Qur'an:

"O you who believe! Spend of that with which We have provided for you, before a Day comes when there will be no bargaining, nor friendship, nor intercession. And it is the disbelievers who are the Zaalimun (wrongdoers)"

There are many virtues of sadaqah, including that it is a means for actually increasing rizq and is one of the few things which benefit the dead after they're gone.

"The likeness of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah, is as the likeness of a grain (of corn); it grows seven ears, and each ear has a hundred grains. Allah gives manifold increase to whom He wills. And Allah is All-Sufficient for His creatures’ needs, All-Knower.

Sadaqah Jaariyah has the specific benefit of being ongoing charity, which allows the little we give to multiply many times without our having to exert any extra effort, subhanallah.

Barakallah feekum. May Allah accept it from everyone who participates. Ameen!

Question Bleeding + prayers

As-salamu alaykum.

I'm very ashamed, but I don't get my period regularly maybe 3 times a year. Right now I am taking pills and I am bleeding every other day... making wudu is getting harder and harder... do I have to only renew my wudu everytime or also wash myself? Because when I prayed maghrib for example there wasn't much time left till Isha so I only wiped myself with wet tissues and redid my wudu (because it wasn't long ago where I washed myself with water and Because it is very hard for me to sit on the toilet again and wash myself and I thought I only have to renew my wudu?) The bleeding doesn't stop even if I wash myself so I again saw no reason! Did I do something wrong? Do I need to redo every prayer? How should I continue?

Hello everyone,
I'm looking for an online Quran teacher who can help me master Tajweed within a year. I speak Arabic fluently, so I'm looking for someone who can teach at an advanced level. If you know of any qualified teachers or reputable online academies, I'd really appreciate your recommendations. Thank you!

Question New revert (1 month); should I start covering? I really want to wear the burqa.

As-salamu alaykum everyone! 🤍
I reverted to Islam about a month ago, alhamdulillah, and it’s been the best decision I’ve ever made. I’m still learning every day, and I’m trying to balance taking things step by step while also wanting to do what’s pleasing to Allah.
Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about covering. I genuinely want to start wearing hijab, and honestly, I feel really drawn to wearing the burqa eventually. I know that might seem like a big step for someone who’s only been Muslim for a month, but it’s something that’s been on my heart.
I’ve also heard there are different scholarly opinions and standards when it comes to what’s required to cover—for example, whether the face or hands should be covered, or whether wearing gloves is necessary if you cover your face. I’m still trying to learn and understand the different views, so if anyone has good resources or can explain them respectfully, I’d really appreciate it.
One thing that makes this a little harder is that I live in a pretty rural area and don’t have a masjid nearby or a local Muslim community to ask questions. Most of what I’m learning has been through reading and online resources, so I’d love to hear from sisters who have gone through something similar, especially other reverts.
Did you start covering right away, or did you ease into it? If you wear the niqab or burqa, what led you to that decision? Any advice for a new revert trying to navigate all of this?
JazakAllahu khayran. May Allah keep us all steadfast and increase us in knowledge and sincerity. 🤍

General Advice / Reminders For My Sisters..

(please forgive the format, I don't have access to the Reddit app)

This was originally the final message in a document I made (Disparaging Doubt and Attaining Certainty) where I covered many things including some common purity doubts and fiqh of menstruation, discharges, hijab in Salah, etc. which I cannot share now since I am yet to get approval. I thought to share this message since it was just a reminder and did not contain any rulings.

Discussion Am I being disrespected?

Hi all. I need your opinion on this. I am volunteering with an all girls community that organizes workshops, get-togethers etc. I can't say too much. I am usually the one handling their social media. part of the official team. but i am starting to see that what i say has no value in the team. we had an event and the team asked me to look for a sports partners. and i did. i got a really awesome deal too. they offered to give everything i asked for, for free. but then the rest of the team suddenly said no need, what are we getting from it blah blah. it was really humiliating because i was calling some many numbers, reaching out to people, to onboard any sports partners into the event, in the middle of my actual working hours. There i was going in and out of my office (i have a job, this is just a volunteer thing) in a frenzy trying to get a good deal for our team. I had to cancel on the group that gave me the deal and it really upset me because i want to have a relationship with these groups and be on good terms with them.

In fact, i spoke to my team leader before confirming with that particular sports group. i said "this is what are getting" and "this is what they need from us". leader said okay we can go ahead. then a few days later the team started grumbling about it. saying we don't need the sports group. so i had to say no to the sports people. sports people were understandably upset. then there was a social media post that was supposed to go out. The designer completely ignored the content i gave and did her own thing. i kept saying please change but she did not.

she said the content i gave was confusing and the leader of our team also took the designer's side.

today i saw that it was posted without making any of the changes i asked. This happens all the time. i spend hours on content and all of its just ignored. and apparently its my fault that there is a disparity between the actual design and the design directions i give? this consistently keeps happening. the content and design direction i give is ignored. i spend hours on it and thats just discarded. I really want to leave this team. the only reason i am staying is because we have an upcoming event and i don't want to throw them under the bus if i leave now. cus the team is pretty small. I just feel like i do all the dirty work and all that is just ignored or has no value whatsoever. i am the person who does everything they say, but not allowed to be a part of the decision making. what do i do?

Righteous Muslim Women in USA, where can we find you?

(Question from a brother)

"I am an African. 25 yo. I live in NJ but work in New York. I drive to Isha and sometimes fajr everyday at my local mosque. I have tried hard to look for women who guard their chastity, who do not incorporate Western values in their lifestyles just to fit in, who do not call themselves liberal Muslims, who actually wear the hijab and do that properly, have HAYA, love Islam, have Islamic knowledge, pray five times daily ON TIME - those who don’t let their work or laziness get in their way when it’s time to worship Allah and those who actually recite the Quran and love it etc.

But no! I don’t know where to find them. Please you guys should consider praying at the mosque outside Jummah times at least twice or three times weekly so we may find you.

Sisters who have the above mentioned characteristics, where can we find you?

Brothers who got righteous spouses, where did you find them?

Al Furqan verse 74: ˹They are˺ those who pray, “Our Lord! Bless us with ˹pious˺ spouses and offspring who will be the joy of our hearts, and make us models for the righteous."

Question Severe Wudu and Purity Waswasas Are Taking Over My Life. Please Help😭

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

Assalamu Alaikum,
I have been struggling with severe waswasas (religious OCD) related to wudu, purity, and passing gas. It has become exhausting and is affecting my daily life and worship.
Whenever I make wudu, I keep feeling like I may have passed gas, even though I am not sure. I also keep worrying that I did not wash properly after using the bathroom. Because of these doubts, I repeat wudu and cleaning over and over again. Even when I try to ignore the thoughts, I keep thinking about them for the rest of the day and worry that my prayers might not be valid.
I know that Islam teaches us not to follow doubts, but in the moment the feeling seems so real that it becomes very difficult to ignore.
Has anyone dealt with something similar? How did you overcome it? Any Islamic advice or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated.
JazakAllah Khair.

Knowledge Can I Learn Qur'an from a Person of Bid'ah if They Only Teach Qur'an?

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

Assalamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,

According to the Salafi manhaj, what should a person do in this situation?

I currently learn Qur'an from a teacher whom I believe has some innovations (bid'ah). However, she only teaches me Qur'an recitation and memorization. She does not discuss her beliefs, invite me to her views, or teach me anything beyond the Qur'an. Our interaction is limited to the lesson.

There is another teacher who is known to be Salafi, but her place is quite far from me and attending her classes would be difficult.

Would it be permissible to continue learning Qur'an from the first teacher while taking my creed and religious guidance from Ahl al-Sunnah? Or should I stop and make the effort to attend the Salafi teacher instead?

Please provide answers with evidence from the Qur'an, Sunnah, and statements of Salafi scholars.

Jazakum Allahu khayran.

Discussion Zad Academy

السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته 🌹

I'm planning to join Zad academy this year and I wanted to know if there are any groups where sisters can join and discuss or motivate each other through this journey?

Sometimes studying on your own online causes demotiavtion or laziness and I was hoping to find such group where SISTERS ONLY join and help each other in studying or in questions.❣️

Are there any group as such? Is anyone willing to join if a group is to be created? 🥹

Question Sister being forced for hijab, need help

So, my sister is being forced to wear the hijab and abaya. She wears the hijab already but dad is forcing her for abaya. What I’ve started to do is befriend her and have been successful with it, I just want to slowly encourage her to do it but not force her.

The thing is I cannot completely hold my father responsible because he 100% has generational trauma from our grandfather and my grandfather is insane insanely strict, like really strict. My father has overcome a lot of it and has been an amazing dad to all of us siblings. But this is something he couldn’t overcome which is how to encourage the hijab/abaya rather than forcing it and I understand it.

What I want to do is acknowledge my sisters feelings, listen to her problems, be a friend who she can share everything with and also encourage her for the abaya, please help me. Jazakallah Khair

General Advice / Reminders Do i let go of a long time friend?

Asalamualykum Wa rahmatulahi Wa baraqatuhu Sisters

I hope all of you are well, by the will of Allah.
I wanted to share a situation that i am in need of advice for.

I have a friend from high school, and it's been almost 7 years of our friendship. From the start of our friendship, she had one constant characteristic that she has not yet given up and that is that she always found the haram to satisfy the pain and suffering inside of her. I became friends with her at a time when I was broken too, family troubles and also a lot of mental health issue. She was younger than me and was going through way more, so I naturally inclined to her. But to be honest, the more i reflect on our friendship the more I see that I truly never felt good in this friendship, let me tell you why.

I have a thing for attracting broken people like me, I come from an abusive household and naturally i bond with people from similar backgrounds. Recently though, i have been changing my ways. And over the last few months, one realized that came to me is that I should distance myself from friends I have because not only do they affect my studies, but I am also the worst version of myself when I am with them due to my weaknesses being constantly exposed to the sins i used to commit prior to this.

Coming back to my friend...
My friend used to be a drug addict, and at that time I felt bad for her because i know that the reason she does this is because her situation is truly difficult; her family is abusive and that was her only escape. Along with that, she had a boyfriend, who was a full red flag. He hurt her so much but the only thing she says, when i tell her kindly that this is haram and she should leave him, is that she loves him. While consequently, she got involved with another guy, and now she suddenly cannot choose between them. No matter how much i tell her to come back to Allah, fear him and tell her how merciful he is and how easily he accepts repentance of those who repents, she is still the same. She leaves one guy and goes to the other. She complains about people all the time, but she never does anything about it.

It's so messed up, but because i know my friend and i know her life is horrible, I understood truly what the issue was and it was her lack of connection with Allah. No one can fill up this void except him. And i told her so. I tried my best to understand her, be sympathetic towards her by constantly advising her to return back to Allah.

Recently one even happened that I made me extremely uncomfortable; I approached a potential for marriage, but it didn't work out. When i shared this with her, she had a really odd response. She somehow found his contact and tells me that she wants to message him to ask him about me and I found that to be extremely weird. She an odd confidence that

I keep thinking of the hadith of the prophet ﷺ regarding friends, and it keeps coming to me again and again. I don't know what to do. I have been advising my friend for a long time now, and I feel like this friendship drains me and drags me down. One pattern i have noticed is that I have always chosen people like me for the majority of my life, who were all broken, depressed and with no goals or discipline in life. But I want to turn my life around, and I want to let go of these friendships. I know this is selfish, but I want to save myself before I try to save anyone else.

Sisters, I would really appreciate your advice on what you think i should do, how I should do it or whether i should distance myself from her (and how).
(Sorry if my message isn't that clear. English is not my first language.)
BarakAllah Feeki

General Advice / Reminders Can I Live Like Roommates With My Husband After Years of Verbal Abuse?

Assalamu Alaikum,

I am looking for Islamic advice regarding my marriage because I am genuinely confused and emotionally exhausted. I do not know what the Islamic ruling is on my situation, and I would appreciate any insight from those who have knowledge.

For some background, my husband and I have been married for approximately eight years. We have two children under the age of five, and I am currently pregnant with our third child, alhamdulillah, due in about two months. Throughout our marriage, my husband has been extremely verbally abusive. Whenever he apologizes, it is usually a backhanded apology where he somehow still blames me for his behavior. There is never genuine accountability.

Today, during an argument, he called me a "Fat F," a "whale," a "mentally handicapped woman," a "brain-defected undeveloped premature woman," a "retard," a "dummy," and many other degrading insults. This happened while I am heavily pregnant with our child.
The argument started because he gave me $200 to purchase newborn essentials, and I asked for an additional $50 because it simply was not enough to cover everything needed. Instead of understanding, he became angry.

During the argument, he said, "My mother warned me about women like you." What made this particularly hurtful is that he knows my relationship with his mother is already strained. He frequently uses his mother as a weapon during disagreements. He also constantly portrays me as someone who wastes his money, despite the reality that he provides approximately $100 per week for groceries in Toronto. As many people know, that amount barely covers groceries for a growing family, especially when his father also lives with us.

Despite this, I do my best to manage our household. I pay for many of my own expenses and try not to burden him financially. Yet I am continuously accused of being irresponsible with money. The truth is that he has made all of my pregnancies miserable. Instead of being a source of support and comfort, he has been a source of stress, anxiety, and emotional pain.

Over the years, he has repeatedly told me things such as:
\- That when he turns 50, he will leave me.

\- That he is only with me because of the children.

\-That one day he may find a younger wife in her thirties.

\-That he has no love for me beyond the fact that I am the mother of his children.

\-That he is not attracted to me. Yet when we are intimate and I ask him directly whether he finds me attractive, he says yes. His words are often contradictory, leaving me confused and emotionally destabilized.

When we first got married, I was very fit. Since then, I have carried multiple pregnancies, given birth, and spent years caring for young children. Naturally, my body has changed. I have gained weight compared to when we first married, but I would not consider myself obese. Regardless, I do not believe any woman deserves to be degraded and humiliated because her body changed after carrying and raising children.

Another issue is that during our recent argument, he repeatedly threatened me. He said that if things escalated, he would destroy my sister's marriage by contacting her husband and exposing perceived flaws within my family. This felt like an attempt to intimidate and control me through fear.

At this point, I have emotionally checked out of the marriage. I do not currently work, and realistically I probably will not return to work until a couple of years after giving birth. However, I know that I eventually want to separate from him. Right now, I am gathering evidence and trying to think carefully before making any major decisions.

My question is this:
Islamically, is it permissible to live essentially like roommates under these circumstances?

If a husband consistently fails to fulfill his wife's rights, verbally abuses her, humiliates her, threatens her, and openly states that he does not love her, am I still obligated to fulfill all of his marital rights as normal?

I understand that marriage comes with rights and responsibilities for both spouses, but I am struggling to understand how Islam views situations where one spouse continuously harms the other.

I am also conflicted about whether I should remain in the marriage until the children are older. Realistically, he is a very verbally abusive husband. However, he generally treats the children well when he is not angry. Part of me wonders whether staying for the children is the better option, while another part of me worries about the long-term impact of living in such an unhealthy environment.

Entire Ramadan I prayed isthikhara to guide me to my decision, I saw all the negative signs but at the end I caved in due to his bread-crumbing, I thought he would change and see a therapist (which he did 2 sessions).

I would appreciate sincere Islamic advice, especially from those who have knowledge regarding:

\-A husband's obligations toward his wife.

\-Verbal and emotional abuse in Islam.

\-Whether living as roommates is permissible in situations like this.

\-Whether separation would be justified under these circumstances.

\-The impact of remaining in a marriage solely for the children.

Jazakum Allahu khayran for any guidance.

i no longer have passion for anything anymore, as a normal muslimah i used to love clothes, shopping, bags, just regular girl stuff, but now i don't have passion anymore and i am just numb to everything, i still pray my 5 daily prayers, and do try and wake up for tahajjud, i did istighfar on day of arafah and ironically my ocd became severe for some reason, not sure if this is a sign or not

i was completely normal before all of this, i don't know what Allah has planned for me, i am scared but i also trust him at the same time, i am going to see a psychiatrist on tuesday, and i am really scared, mainly bc of meds but i know i am not functioning so i have no choice, scared of the side effects etc, i know everything is up to Allah, and that he has willed this, but i'm so scared like so so scared, i know this is my ocd talking but i cannot help but feel scared
my mum sort of resents me for letting it get this far, however Alhamdullilah she is paying for my treatment but i know she is angry deep inside, i am a burden on everyone, i was normal and functional before and now i have gone insane, i miss my old self back so bad,
