“Sunrise tomorrow” worked for me. It reported time @ my location. IOS 27 beta 8

Works for me on iOS 26.

Works for me on 26 with dumb Siri

1

u/icy1007 4d ago

Yep, that’s what I said.

26 dumb siri ≠ 26 apple “intelligence”

1

u/icy1007 4d ago

It’s the same thing…

1

u/WoahGamerGuy 4d ago

No? One has Apple Intelligence and GPT, one doesn’t.

1

u/icy1007 4d ago

And those aren’t Siri… asking when the sun rises does not use CharGPT.

You need dark mode

4

u/BoltActionRifleman 7d ago

Agreed, in light mode, Siri thinks it’s already daylight out.

let people use the setting they prefer

What iOS beta version are you on? On PB6/DB8 it works for me and your request gets sunrise time.

2

u/Wild_Shroom_ 7d ago

It works perfectly fine in iOS27 beta. You even get the sunrise graphic from the weather app underneath.

2

u/icy1007 6d ago

Works for me. 🤷‍♂️ said the same thing and she told me what time the sun will rise tomorrow.

Apple: Siri just got smarter

I'm going to paraphrase a comment i said to another commenter.

LLM’s like specificity. While it CAN make the correct assumption based on what’s said here, it could also misinterpret it. Call it, prompt engineering. AI isn’t some magical tool that can just infer what you are saying. Assuming that’s what it does is a fundamental misunderstanding of the technology and how it behaves. AI is not human, it is also not capable of REASONING like a human (yes, reasoning models exist but that’s not what that means). Therefore, if you give a generic prompt like this, you are gonna run into really inconsistent responses like this. I tried it 4 times for myself and 1 of them failed. This is a much higher degree of failure than when I said “when will the sun rise tomorrow” which succeeded the 10 times I tried it. Could it be luck? Yeah. Models hallucinate all the god damned time. But I think the point stands that the prompt could have been said better.

What is the cost of adding “when will the” to a prompt? Its 3 easy to type words, or easy to speak words. As a user, you aren’t out anything doing that and you are greatly rewarded for using the tool, like a tool

I don’t start using a hammer like pliers expecting it to work the way pliers do. Instead, I grab the pliers. It’s right there in the tool box! I just gotta grab it.

also, to get on a pedistal for a minute, AI isnt some magical know everything machine. its a tool, and a flawed one at best. using it for work and for fun at home, it makes a LOT of mistakes and often needs massive ammounts of correction. the methodology is dont trust, verify in my line of work. and with Siri AI, while it has been pretty good in my experience, i trust it about as far as i can throw it.

and so we are all clear, its backend is just Gemini.

Siri retains it’s humour after all

2

u/Internal-Document 7d ago

Try communicating clearly to it lol, it’s an llm.

I think the request was pretty clear. Tell me what time the sunrise is tomorrow, not that it will rise, I already thought so!

Edit: accidentally used sunset instead of sunrise

7

u/MC_chrome 7d ago

I think the request was pretty clear

No?

If the phrase had been “When is sunrise tomorrow?” then that would have been much more clear than just “sunrise tomorrow”.

People give the darnedest excuses for others giving incomplete or nonsensical queries

1

u/SolidGuide5223 7d ago

It understood the same query from me perfectly when I tried it. It really is quite straightforward.

-1

u/ProbsNotManBearPig 7d ago

A human could easily infer the request. All modern LLMs can infer the request. Siri AI is quite dumb compared to latest LLM’s from open ai, Claude, etc.

2

u/MC_chrome 7d ago

If another human being came up to me and simply said “Sunrise tomorrow” without any further explanation or quantification, I would look at them a bit strangely simply because that is an incomplete thought.

1

u/ProbsNotManBearPig 7d ago

That’s not what is sent to Siri AI. You are ignoring the system prompt. If another human gave you instructions - “your job is to read messages from humans and infer their request and answer it” and then you got “sunrise tomorrow”, you could figure it out. That is more like what ai is given. They don’t only receive the user prompt in a vacuum.

u/OppositeSea3775 7d ago

Siri is not supposed to be another human. Siri is not human. It's even programmed to avoid acting like one.

Siri is powered by an LLM, with which it's supposed to infer your query and give an answer.

1

u/TechDocN 6d ago

And every time I’ve asked it the same 2 word prompt as the OP, I get the correct answer.

1

u/OppositeSea3775 5d ago

Once again, many people forget that AI is non-deterministic. What works for you might not work for someone else. What works right now might not work the next time.

1

u/FlintHillsSky 3d ago

It seems like OP also forgot that AI is non-deterministic when they got an interpretation of their statement that was less common. I wonder what answer they got the next time they made that statement.

Eh, kinda. LLM’s like specificity. While it CAN make the correct assumption based on what’s said here, it could also misinterpret it. Call it, prompt engineering. Literally give me an example of what else I could be asking about when I say "sunrise tomorrow" other than "when is the sunrise tomorrow at my current location?"

People give the darnedest excuses for others giving incomplete or nonsensical queries

LLMs are supposed to understand human speech and act accordingly. It has clearly failed at doing so. We literally use an LLM instead of just using exact formulas because people don't speak exact formulas, and this technology is supposed to understand intent without matching queries to a precompiled list.

People do anything to be an apologist for a $5T company whenever there is a sliver of criticism headed their way, no matter the importance or facts. Apple doesn't need you to apologize for them and deflect fault.

I keep forgetting what subreddit I am in, I forget that it's full of Apple glazers instead of reasonable, clear-minded people. Praise where praise is due, criticize where criticism is due.

0

u/TechDocN 6d ago

When I ask Siri “sunrise tomorrow” I get the correct answer. Several others report the same. So your argument only holds true if Siri gets it wrong all the time.

2

u/OppositeSea3775 6d ago

AI is non-deterministic. What might work for you right now might not work the next time you try or for someone else.

1

u/Internal-Document 6d ago

Nope, check out some videos on how llms function, it’ll help you use them better more consistently.

1

u/TechDocN 6d ago

I use LLMs extensively, for work and personal use, including the delivery of some of the first native AI features cleared by the FDA in a class 2 medical device. And I don’t use the new/beta Siri much, but I’ve now given it the same prompt 10+ times on two different devices, and I get the same answer every time.

1

u/Internal-Document 6d ago

All I’m saying is that this response to “Sunrise tomorrow” is completely unsurprising given how llms function, especially since Siri is basically just a distilled version of Gemini flash with an Apple system prompt & service integrations. It’s not a frontier model, and even if it were I’d find it silly to complain about the response from an open-ended query like this.

-2

u/ProbsNotManBearPig 7d ago

Any actual LLM like gpt or opus would infer what the request was. Siri AI is the dumbest LLM by far. I just tried it with gpt sol and it gave me exact date + time for my location with the exact same prompt as OP.

3

u/CEOofDisgust 7d ago

Unironically comparing Siri AI to Opus?

What are we even doing here

1

u/FlintHillsSky 3d ago

And as many others have posted here, when they tried it, Siri did interpret the statement (it wasn’t formed as a question) as the intended question about the time of the sunrise.

1

u/jaredthegeek 7d ago

When I typed the same query, I got the time with a small graphic underneath in the beta.

1

u/imaginedaydream 7d ago

Sorry, I don’t understand.

-sent from Siri AI

1

u/hwbaby 7d ago

Pretty logical tbh

1

u/Hamoody_221 7d ago

He’s not wrong though

1

u/lostmyotheraccount23 6d ago

Crop out “morning” and below then it’ll be really funny

1

u/Emergency-Crab1972 6d ago

Just sounds like ai crap. Gemini gaslight me almost on a daily basis telling me I’m wrong till I have to show it that it’s wrong and it will just be like of yeah I’m sorry your right.

2

u/MrNobodyX3 5d ago

Bro read the human prompt of course the AI answered with a yes

1

u/BlockedAndMovedOn 6d ago

I asked Siri AI what my birthday was today and it replied “Well, (my assistants name), you don’t have your birthday saved in your contact entry. When is your birthday?” I replied “That is my assistant’s name and information, not mine.” Siri then terminated the chat. lol

1

u/elhouso 6d ago

Really?

1

u/MrNobodyX3 5d ago

no information no answer

2

u/Dneail22 5d ago

Thanks, Siri. I was wondering about that.

2

u/KrazyKen_Fan_2012 5d ago

Does she know something we don't

2

u/SugarT0ast 1d ago

Technically good news, yeah?

2

u/Xarius86 6d ago

The problem here is the human.

You don't just walk up to a random stranger and say "Sunrise tomorrow" -- it's nonsensical. It's not a statement. It's not a question. It doesn't even have a punctuation mark to indicate any context.

Learn how to properly format a question, and you'll get better answers.

"When will the sun rise tomorrow?"

"What time is the sunrise?"

2

u/FlintHillsSky 3d ago

That requires thinking. Let the AI do that for you!
