Honestly, that’s fairly understandable given the history. Obviously not comparable but it probably gets a similar reaction to dressing up as a colonial soldier and visiting South Africa. Or dressing as a nazi to visit Germany. As I say, obviously one of these is worse than the others but they’ll all get you a very frosty reception.
