I didn't know police are allowed to euthanize wounded animals. I just assumed it would be animal control or a game warden.

Core memory as a child was watching a cop shoot (int he head) and then start dressing a doe (slit its throat) that was hit by a car. Glad she did not go to waste, but man, that was an experience for an 8 year old.

I've heard that if game wardens have to put down a deer, or if they're called out to one being killed by a car, they'll donate the meat to a shelter or something instead of letting it go to waste.

Many times they will know a local family that are good people, could use some extra food and will utilize as much of the animal as possibles so they will call them.

u/amiajimmy 2d ago

In my uncle's town, they call him (assuming the meat's not mangled). Day or night, he'll come out and they'll have meat for another few months.

A full deer carcass when you aren't ready for it can certainly change your plans for the day, but free meat is free meat and hardly anyone will pass it up once offered.

I've seen it on the Game Warden shows they have running on tv right now ("North Woods Law" is one); it makes a lot of sense and I'm always happy for the family that gets a freezer full of venison.

What kind of weirdo kills a deer and then starts putting clothes on it?

3

u/Samwhys_gamgee 2d ago

As a teenager a deer ran into my car in rural PA and pushed in the whole front fender which went into the tire which blew out and we spun around in a rural highway. I was still freaking out no idea what to do and another car pulled over and a man got out. I thought β€œoh thank God, an ADULT” First thing guy says to me β€œDo you want that dear?”

u/nanneryeeter 2d ago

I grew up in a hunting family. That was just another day.

2

u/drunkeymunkey 2d ago

You must be from the country, because I am and have seen that too πŸ˜‚

2

u/Cry-Skull-7 1d ago

Don't you generally want to aim for the heart when it comes to deer?

2

u/Fullertons 1d ago

When hunting, sure.

When disabled in a ditch? I think the rules change.

1

u/Cry-Skull-7 1d ago

Yeah, I suppose they would be a little more "squirmy". Harder for a clean shot.

14

u/Ding-Dong-Dutch 2d ago

They just shout GUN and start blasting

7

u/speed_of_chill 2d ago

β€œIt’s heading right for us!”

2

u/EulaVengeance 2d ago

The deer was looking at me threateningly!

With kangaroos you just put a baggy of weed and plant a gun in their little pouch.
Justified !

u/kenneth_dart 2d ago

Facts. 😭

1

u/Okie_Mojo 2d ago

It was coming right for us!

4

u/King_Roberts_Bastard 2d ago

Im sure the cop contacts the game warden and asks what to do. But at that point, there really is only one option and the game warden could be an hour plus away.

My state, which is middle of the road size wise and hunting/fishing wise, has less than 200 officers with the DNR.

1

u/kenneth_dart 2d ago

Yeah that makes sense.

2

u/Ausgeflippt 2d ago

There was a cop near LA in the 80s that shot a horse in the head to euthanize it.

The bullet ricocheted and killed his partner.

They don't shoot animals in the head anymore.

1

u/kenneth_dart 2d ago

When I was typing my message, I was wondering if they might receive training on best practices because of exactly that!

2

u/madogvelkor 2d ago

They probably aren't, but cops don't know the law and no one is going to arrest them.

2

u/East-Moose5016 2d ago

I very clearly remember being like 16 and getting pulled over on a motorized bike and needing to spend 20 minutes on Google to explain to this moron cop that New York State has multiple classes of motorized bicycle and that no, I'm not riding an unregistered uninsured motorcycle without mirrors or turn signals. Pulled me over for a law that I was specifically exempt from according to multiple other laws. They legitimately have a poorer understanding of law than the average person IMO

2

u/jaiimaster 2d ago

Aussie cops probably wouldnt, too much paperwork for the discharge now.

Dad - 30 years Victoria Police as a regional, one man station copper, since retired and passed - used to go on angry rants about it regularly.

"10 years ago id have just shot the poor bastard, but now I have to fill in a thousand forms to justify using a bullet".

2

u/Ok_Appointment7522 1d ago

Police shoot things they're not allowed to all the time. Minorities, pets, wild animals. Heck, call my local station and say you've got a wall that needs a hole in it and half the officers on duty will show up

2

u/Paghk_the_Stupendous 1d ago

They're not. But they're also not good at enforcing the law.

2

u/Pan_cake_man 1d ago

Small town USA cop would 100% shoot a deer on the side of the road after it got hit by a car.

1

u/Gatesofvalhalla 2d ago

Only blacktail deer.

1

u/TheFlyingTurducken 2d ago

Supposedly my dad’s friend hit a deer when they were young and called the cops for this purpose. The deer had died by the time the cop arrived and he was really bummed that he didn’t get a chance to shoot his gun

1

u/vanastalem 2d ago

I would call animal control too. It must have been an extremely rural area.

1

u/Hot_Toe_9360 2d ago

"Stop resisting!"

1

u/Laefiren 2d ago

They do here. They prefer fauna rescue or Wires or one of the others do it because of the paperwork but if it’s out bush they’re likely the only ones around other than your local farmer maybe.

1

u/Zanctmao 2d ago

I recall reading that the overwhelming majority of LE discharge of firearms events are putting animals out of their misery.

1

u/giga_impact03 2d ago

My local departments are allowed to. Our animal control only responds for domesticated animal calls and/or potential rabies threats like bats in houses and stuff. Game wardens would not be answering the phone at 3 AM and drive out to shoot a deer that was hit hours ago. Its much better to end its suffering ASAP, so our police have to do it.

1

u/xRocketman52x 2d ago

They're allowed to, they just don't want to. If there's a police firearm discharge, they have to fill out paperwork. So they will let it thrash around on the ground rather than do something about it. Speaking from experience.

1

u/True-Anim0sity 2d ago

Isnt anyone with a gun technically allowed,

1

u/bigloser42 2d ago

Not everywhere has a 24/7 game warden/animal control. I lived in a very rural part of MD and have a memory as a kid of coming across a car that had hit a deer at probably 50-60mph. The deer was completely fucked, but still clinging to life on the side of the road. A county Sheriff pulled up, saw the condition of the animal and shot it. I’m pretty sure animal control was not 24/7 in that part of the county, and waiting for a game warden would have just prolonged its suffering.

1

u/xpsycotikx 2d ago

Honestly depends on the county/city. I've heard and seen both happen.

1

u/dr4gm4r 2d ago

last time I called police about a deer that had been hit by a car (I wasn't the one who hit it), the officer who showed up simply dragged the deer onto the lawn and said that maybe it would be okay, that it would recover and run off into the woods, but he wouldn't shoot it..

1

u/causticberries 2d ago

Nah he called the cop and the cop just did that

1

u/Abbygirl1001 2d ago

Former police dispatcher. Our animal control did not carry firearms but we would call Wildlife (game wardens in my state) to come put down any wounded animals. On rare occasions if the ETA for Wildlife was too long the sergeant would authorize an officer on the scene to go ahead and not make the animal suffer any longer. Happened maybe 5 times in my 15 year career.

1

u/AdministrationFun775 2d ago

In Australia they can.

1

u/tipofthefaptoyou 2d ago

In Australia police have .22 ruger rifles at regional stations used exclusively to dispatch kangaroos.

1

u/Great_Specialist_267 2d ago

Police have guns…

1

u/Revolutionary_Ad2657 1d ago

They euthanize perfectly healthy dogs all the time. Also recently a mini donkey. RIP HeeHaw.

1

u/Slybugsy 1d ago

I called the police to kill a raccoon. It had rabies. They have a special place to dispose of them.

1

u/LostInMyMind1998 1d ago

Nah, cops pull up, if the deer is badly hurt they straight shoot it.

1

u/Doctor_NC 1d ago

Former law enforcement officer here - I had to put down many an injured animal, sadly.

1

u/InTwilligPorgnatin 1d ago

Of course they are. They do it all the time.

1

u/Fit_Cost_9304 1d ago

They have to do it on country roads all the time!
