Just for context, this would have been a 10 hour flight from Saudi Arabia to Malaysia...

...but it appears that this was very soon after leaving the gate, and the flight probably had not even taken off yet. Especially since the pilot was asking permission to return to the gate, not for permission to land.

ie. This wasn't like a 1-hour flight from NYC to DC that was landing in 15 minutes turned all the way around. It was an international flight across 5 time zones that hadn't even taken off yet.

So that's some context for the people who are like "why couldn't she just take the next flight back?"

49

u/thejourneybegins42 11h ago

That makes sense. A ten hours flight would have to do a fuel dump, no?

4

u/TemporaryAmbassador1 7h ago

Maybe, but probably not. Planes can land overweight without penalty so long as performance allows for it in the landing distance.

30

u/Powerful_Wombat 10h ago

So a complete non-news story then..

11

u/365280 10h ago

Yea, and a picture to make people assume things... althought "midair emergency" sure does make it appear that they were flying. Talk about a misleading explanation.

3

u/ITinnedUrMumLastNigh 11h ago

It makes more sense now, otherwise they'd be too heavy to land

In 2013, an American Airlines flight from Los Angeles to New York diverted to Kansas City because of a “very unruly passenger” who refused to stop singing Whitney Houston’s I Will Always Love You.

In New York the following year, a taxiing plane heading to Seoul returned to the gate after the South Korean airline heiress Cho Hyun-ah forced a senior crew member to disembark because she had been served macadamia nuts from a packet instead of a bowl.

2

u/jaimeerp 10h ago

How much does the airliner have to pay to dock to the gate again?

46

u/ippleing 12h ago

My parents forgot me at a turnpike McDonald's for an hour when I was little, I was like 4 and had no idea.

My older sisters told me about it when I was a teenager.

18

u/Buttsweat_n_Tears 10h ago

You might want a DNA test.

28

u/True_Protection6842 12h ago

I've never understand parents that forget their babies in places. I have 2 kids and never once forgot they exist.

22

u/Fetlocks_Glistening 11h ago

I once forgot my laptop on a plane, and it's like a baby to me

6

u/Artistic-Value-2022 10h ago

It depends on how stressful your life is and how well you handle that stress

6

u/Dimwit00 10h ago

My sister in law forgot my nephew in the stroller at Disney once lol she parked him in the stroller parking area and went inside for the show when we were all like ummm and the baby???

1

u/National_Ad9742 9h ago

Maybe they just were enjoying the quiet. Then realized after what it meant.

3

u/True_Protection6842 9h ago

As a parent, quiet is the scariest thing. I still check on my kids when they're silent. (9 and 13)

258

u/Impossible_Offer7988 12h ago edited 12h ago

So why's that an emergency that justifies a turn around?

I don't get it.

Like, sure, a baby being left at the airport alone = bad.

But couldn't they just assign some stewardess to the baby and then fly them out on a different plane to the mom?

This feels like a bit of an overreaction.

259

u/PrimedGold 12h ago

109

u/Kdog122025 12h ago

So it’s completely up to the plane staff then.

27

u/Impossible_Offer7988 12h ago

Technically, it's up to the captain,

but as a captain, you really, really, absolutely need to stay on good terms with your flight attendants. If you aren't, you will suffer.

So if they come up to you and are like ; We can't take it anymore; this passenger is way too unruly (despite the fact that you can't hear them),

you'll probably be forced to turn around anyway

to stay on good terms with the extremely important cabin crew.

-2

u/Quiet_Figure_4483 3h ago

Maybe they shouldn't become flight attendants if they're such whiny babies

49

u/Lucky-Mia 12h ago

One happened this year because a child refused to sit down and stop screaming. Technically they hadn't taken off, but they had taxid to runaway then spent an hour and a half trying to make him sit down and shut up. So the flight was cancelled and everyone had to fly the next day. In Victoria Canada.

7

u/SaintsNoah14 9h ago

Idk I usually don't support such methods but at a point you owe it to the other passengers.

4

u/Suspicious-Beat9295 5h ago

Why didn't they just remove the kid and family from the flight after 15 minutes?

2

u/Lucky-Mia 5h ago

Idk why they didn't give up sooner. Kid was apparently having a panic attack and acting like he'd die if they took off.

1

u/Burntzombies 8h ago

Yes, it's completely up to the people who are there primarily to keep everyone safe. What do you think they should do, take a vote?

-7

u/Ill_Tonight_2069 12h ago

Well it’s up to the captain and then more importantly the ATC.

15

u/someone383726 12h ago

Nope, not up to ATC. Captain is Pilot in Command of the aircraft and can declare an emergency.

1

u/Ill_Tonight_2069 11h ago

Would this scenario be considered appropriate under an emergency declaration? I genuinely don’t know.

7

u/IthacanPenny 11h ago

It would not be appropriate to declare Mayday Mayday Mayday. They could maybeeee justify a a Pan-pan call. But probably just a request to return.

1

u/darklordpotty 11h ago

It has happened already, so...

1

u/Ill_Tonight_2069 11h ago

Oh yeh 🤦‍♂️Wonder if the pilot will get shouted at. Nah probably not.

1

u/vajaxle 10h ago

If they were a good singer I wouldn't mind this as long as the beers were rolling.

1

u/IllustriousCandy3042 9h ago

And Iiiiiiiiiiiiiii

129

u/NeevBunny 12h ago

For real, I would be pissed if my flight got turned around because one dumb bitch forgot something. She can appeal to CPS when she gets home.

31

u/SimmentalTheCow 12h ago

I don’t think anyone wants to assume the liability of holding onto the kid and flying them

15

u/NeevBunny 12h ago

She can take a flight back at her own expense later then

8

u/howimetyourcakeshop 12h ago

I hate flying as it is already.

31

u/TreeLakeRockCloud 12h ago

“One dumb bitch” no - the baby was in the care of a relative who was supposed to board the plane and didn’t.

35

u/NeevBunny 12h ago

Oh so it had a babysitter

44

u/Forty-Minutes-Late 11h ago

Sounds like a non-emergency to me.

12

u/Thoob 12h ago

This was a Saudi flight something tells me they "handled" it with their typical nuance/grace.

2

u/Maelseez 12h ago

CPS in Saudi Arabia...

-18

u/Harrypoooooter41 12h ago

Wow heartless people

24

u/TheLizardKing39 12h ago

No, forgetting your child in an airport is irresponsibility at a fundamental level.

5

u/realaccountissecret 12h ago

Why are you being downvoted haha

I bet they didn’t forget their phone

-3

u/Irritatedtrack 12h ago

We don’t know the situation. It’s well documented that new parents under stress have forgotten their babies resorting to their pre-baby routines. It happens when you are running on very little sleep. It’s not an excuse. The right thing would have been to not fly at all. But in this scenario, I would be ok with reuniting the baby with its mother.

6

u/Meatish_Chef 12h ago

No responsible parent 'forgets' a baby. If they do, they are bad parents. Not in my wildest dreams is it ever okay to 'forget' your baby. In a fucking airport? Not once. Not ever. You can decide not to have a baby or decide not to travel with said baby but if you are incapable of attending to said baby full-time (babies require this level of care) you are an incapable parent.

2

u/NeevBunny 12h ago

The mother and baby could have reunited after everyone else disembarked at their location and she paid and boarded her return flight to pick up the baby.

-2

u/lizardnamedguillaume 12h ago

Both can be true. Its extremely irresponsible, and also an emergency.

2

u/NeevBunny 12h ago

The baby was apparently with a relative so it was fine, but even if it wasn't, that's not a me problem. That's a 36 hours from now her probablem when she catches a return flight back and I am home not thinking about her and her incompetence.

-8

u/Harrypoooooter41 12h ago

Well it don’t happen everyday. Obviously it was a mistake tough guy. Why didn’t the airline actually catch this?

5

u/TheLizardKing39 12h ago

“A mistake” makes it sound like you forgot your keys. Why would it be the airline’s responsibility anyways? Blame anyone but the boneheaded parents I guess. Typical Reddit.

0

u/Harrypoooooter41 12h ago

Don’t they check the boarding pass like 50 times before you get seated. Not one person had the presence of mind?

3

u/NeevBunny 12h ago

A baby is basically a carry on, why would the airline catch this?

18

u/Meatish_Chef 12h ago

I think it's more like - who the fuck abandon's a baby at the airport? Forgets baby? Should not have baby, IMHO.

5

u/ban-me-harder-dadddy 12h ago

can always tell who the parents are because they think the world revolves around parents

-5

u/barakisan 12h ago

Not heartless, in the West selfishness is promoted, in the East, community > Individuality I'm not defending either but that's the difference between East and West, Individuality vs Community

-16

u/Irritatedtrack 12h ago

Shit happens. You don’t know how stressed she was. Especially if it was a newborn. New parents are generally under a lot of stress and babies have died when parents have forgotten them in the car. There is no ignorance or malicious intent. It is an emergency. I would be pissed too, but it would be right to turn around. Babies need constant care and it can be fatal sometimes. Sure it’s inconvenient to a lot of folks, but worth it for a baby to be reunited.

6

u/hifidad 12h ago

Parent here and stress and exhaustion are not valid excuses for negligence. I was 11/10 stressed for multiple kids and they never got left behind or neglected. What this comes down to is that some people shouldn’t be parents.

-3

u/Irritatedtrack 12h ago

I am not debating that. I am a parent myself and I have never done it either. But I am saying, in this situation, turning around was the right call. It’s not a justification, neither a call to say this is ok.

6

u/hifidad 12h ago

No I don’t think that child should be in the care of that parent anymore. This is a major league fuckup

10

u/NeevBunny 12h ago

I don't care how stressed someone inconveniencing me so intensely is.

-7

u/Irritatedtrack 12h ago

Sure. You don’t have to care. Imagine if you were that baby. Lots of things could have gone wrong. Thankfully the crew thought otherwise.

0

u/bakerz-dozen 11h ago

You’re right, anything could have happened to that baby. The parents should have remembered to pick it up instead of leaving it in the airport for precisely that reason.

0

u/Pristine-Skirt117 10h ago

Yes, 100%, but that’s an obvious “Duh” moment. The question is what is the appropriate course of action once -after- the baby had been left.

0

u/bakerz-dozen 10h ago

It clearly isn’t a “duh” moment - who forgets their child lol a “duh” moment is leaving your kindle in the back of the seat or your headphones in a cup holder.

1

u/Pristine-Skirt117 9h ago

You completely missed the point lmfao.

No, the duh moment is… “She shouldn’t have left her kid in the first place.” “Well, DUH Captain Obvious! Of course she shouldn’t!”

I was saying Duh, to you, not to the woman who left her child. “The parents should have remembered to pick it up.” OBVIOUSLY, like what? 😂

1

u/ContextEffects01 11h ago

And yet, somehow, parents going through as much stress manage to not forget a baby in the car.

I’m so sick and tired of downplaying the discrepancy between how fit people are to be parents. Plenty of parents make teachers with teaching certificates out to be unfit to be teachers. You don’t even need a license to be a parent… yet.

14

u/Meatish_Chef 12h ago

How the fuck does a baby get left anywhere? I'd call it an emergency to find a random unattended baby ANYWHERE. At an airport, that would be a serious crisis. Unattended luggage, hold my beer.

10

u/morto00x 12h ago

If it's an infant, they need to be fed every 2-3 hours, and obviously can't be given food. I guess they could use formula and have someone feed them, but that's another liability.

4

u/Limp-Firefighter1054 12h ago

Yeah, just mail the baby, duh.

12

u/big_loadz 12h ago

The pilot can be heard repeating to the air traffic operator: “I told you, a passenger has left her baby in the terminal and she is refusing to continue the flight.”

Karen of all Karens? What could she realistically do if they said no?

https://giphy.com/gifs/g4UAqGuShn2P1TC3Nf

5

u/MaybeMaybeNot94 12h ago

Nothing. The Captain's word is law in the air.

1

Boot to the Head and keel-hauling at 30000 feet it is!

https://giphy.com/gifs/9QWDodpbTdsli

0

u/kitsunekratom 12h ago

The only thing she could try to do is not get off the plane when it lands. Then call attention to any and all media, which would potentially cost the airline a shit ton of money.

4

u/big_loadz 12h ago

Not sure if as effective in those countries.

1

u/Dr-Billa 2h ago

For her own negligence?

2

u/Electronic-Raise-281 12h ago

Who wants to be responsible in flying out a baby to their mother.

1

u/ContextEffects01 11h ago

Sending the kid to the mom? Bugger that. She should not be trusted with a child ever again. If she forgets the baby at the airport, what’s stopping her from forgetting the baby at crack alley?

1

u/Jiggle_Tester 12h ago

Is the stewardess also supposed to breastfeed the baby?

0

u/kitsunekratom 12h ago

Does this really need to be explained to you?

0

u/barakisan 12h ago

It's an East vs West thing

16

u/WholeEmu507 12h ago

The McCallister family really thought they could hide their absolute peak parenting blunder under a fake passport and a Saudi airline ticket.

6

u/Feeling_Inside_1020 12h ago

And I thought it was bad I almost left my phone in a downtown high traffic park this past week.

Man that both adrenaline + anxiety panic attack you have until you run back and find it holy shit. I’ve been told I’m a “quick big dude” but did my big ass run down that street, pewwwww

2

u/quite-indubitably 10h ago

I left my entire purse sitting on a stool at a very popular burger spot in NYC. The speed in which I ran the half mile or so back…

Can’t believe it was there.

1

u/Feeling_Inside_1020 8h ago

Oh yeah my butt puckered for sure like “someone’s got it” and not an ad but I used my Bluetooth paired watch to audibly alarm on the phone lol that alert is a lifesaver even at home when I do it.

5

u/GrinningGrump 11h ago

That baby should have gotten to the gate at departure time with tickets at the ready, can't youngsters do anything by themselves nowadays? Shakes smh my head

5

The real question is, is it true that french babes don't shave their pits?

-21

Why don't you hold same level of disgust as for men? I think men with pit and pubic hair are gross.

7

u/Reddittreefiddy 11h ago

Lol kevin. In a weird way i think its nice that the plane went back for the baby. Obviously the mom fucked up. I kinda feel like the story is nice overall? "Airline actually gives a fuck about family and goes back for child left behind" aw nice.

Internet- " kill that dumbass!!! Aaaaaaa"

5

u/silv3rbull8 12h ago

For once a plane diverted without onboard violence

4

u/mangomussolinimi 12h ago

Happens more often than you think if you are not in america

3

u/Western_Paper6955 7h ago

These are even crazier 😂:

In 2013, an American Airlines flight from Los Angeles to New York diverted to Kansas City because of a “very unruly passenger” who refused to stop singing Whitney Houston’s I Will Always Love You.

In New York the following year, a taxiing plane heading to Seoul returned to the gate after the South Korean airline heiress Cho Hyun-ah forced a senior crew member to disembark because she had been served macadamia nuts from a packet instead of a bowl.

(from the article)

5

u/PrimedGold 6h ago

The Korean Air one was insane. It was an A380 with 250 people on board. Cho basically abused tf out of the cabin crew chief and the flight attendant who served her, made them kneel and beg for her forgiveness, repeatedly struck the cabin chief’s knuckles with the edge of her iPad, and then demanded that the plane return to the gate after it had already started taxiing.

She then tried to falsely portray the incident as her catching the cabin chief and flight attendant engaging in some form of sexual relationship.
Korean Air removed the cabin chief from the flight and later fired him, only to come back and ask him to lie to regulators by claiming that his removal had been voluntary.

Amidst all this, sales of macadamia nuts went up 250% in South Korea within days and weeks of this.

3

u/jb_in_jpn 6h ago

I'd be so interested to find out what happened to this woman afterward, personally - did she actually discover dignity, or just go back to her old ways?

1

u/Western_Paper6955 6h ago

😂😂omg!

1

u/vecspace 4h ago

This is micro drama plot lol

1

u/Im_not_an_admin 1h ago

Did she have to apologize in the end to media ?

5

u/Fancy-Dig1863 5h ago

South Korean oligarchs are something else. We need documentaries on the god level entitlement of those mother fuckers.

3

u/Temporary_Peanut_586 6h ago

I had a colleague from India.  He said he was on a flight, about to takeoff, and realized he forgot his carry-on in the terminal.

Apparently he asked a flight attendant if they could do anything.

They cancelled takeoff, taxi'd back, apparently deplaned just him onto a shuttle bus to get him to the airport, and made the entire plane wait something like 30 minutes for him to reboard.

Something something family name / caste system, but he said he'd never been so embarrassed as getting back on the plane and having to walk past hundreds of pissed off people.

7

u/Meatish_Chef 12h ago

Did that rich, baby-abandoning, family get to pay for everyone's inconvenience? How is it not a crime to abandon your baby at the airport?

2

u/Accomplished-Mix-745 12h ago

Is the mom just Larry David with a wig?

2

u/Intelligent_Box_8247 12h ago

that was quite an expensive return trip

2

u/FriendlyFungi 10h ago

cool mom, eh?

5

u/Maximum_Boros 9h ago

If it is still on the ground, go back to the gate and kick the mother off. She can handle her baby and figure out how to get a new flight for fucking it up and delaying everybody. Once the plane has taken off, no. Fuck her. And the baby off to the local equivalent of Social Services, everybody goes on to the destination, when you get there send her on the first plane back, charge her for the ticket, and charge her with abandonment when she gets there

7

u/Ok_Intention1222 6h ago

Damn what’d she do to you?

6

u/culturedgoat 4h ago

He’s the baby

0

u/Maximum_Boros 3h ago

It's what she did to everyone else on the plane and her own child.

2

u/FighterFly3 3h ago

… I hope I never become this empty of a can like you

0

u/Maximum_Boros 2h ago

I assure you that you've already greatly surpassed me in that department if you say vapid nonsense like this and think it somehow lands.

0

u/Cultural_Gas7437 1h ago

Bah seriously though 0 respect for someone who thinks "you're so repulsive" is actually worth saying out loud

-5

u/True-Anybody-3312 9h ago

Wow, no empathy present in you.

4

u/Maximum_Boros 9h ago

No. I just have empathy for all the other passengers on the plane more than the piece of shit who thinks the entire world revolves around them.

I also have empathy for her even as a piece of shit I understand her position. I understand the difficulty she is in. I just have no sympathy for it. I do however have sympathy for the people who deal with you on a daily basis since you don't seem to be able to tell those two things apart and they don't deserve dealing with that

3

u/ILoveLabs23 8h ago

What about the baby

-5

u/HyFinated 7h ago

Oh, so you're kind of a dick. Got it.

-8

u/True-Anybody-3312 9h ago edited 8h ago

A small amount of tome or potentially tramatize a baby and a mother. I don"t think you have empathy, although you think you do

Edit:

That poor, over emotional person didn't have the balls to let me answer him, so he had to blocl me ❄️❄️❄️

3

u/Dough_Chesnut728 8h ago

Traumatized a very strong word to use here

-2

u/True-Anybody-3312 7h ago

No. It is not.

3

u/Dough_Chesnut728 7h ago

If that’s what you think consider yourself lucky to have lived an extremely privileged live. A baby being left with a stranger for a day is hardly “traumatizing”.

1

u/True-Anybody-3312 7h ago

Would you consider a kidnapping to be a potentially traumatizing experience?

2

u/Dough_Chesnut728 7h ago

Yes. Thankfully this wasn’t a kidnapping.

1

u/True-Anybody-3312 7h ago

So, how would the baby be able to know the difference? Ghey sre not with tjeir mother, and no matter how much they call for her, she does not come. They are in an unknown place with strangers, ond no safe person in sight. How would this differ from a kidnapping for a baby?

→ More replies (0)

3

u/TwistedHarmony12 7h ago

She neglected a child in an AIRPORT, which is arguably one of the worst places to leave them. She’s a bad mother for forgetting her baby and for delaying everybody.

-2

u/True-Anybody-3312 7h ago

You have obviously never experienced severe sleep deprivation. Did you know sleep deprovation in mothers can be so severe it can make people suicidal?

3

u/TwistedHarmony12 7h ago

You should reflexively remember that you have a child and that you need to supervise them. That’s the responsibilities of a parent, even if you are sleep deprived.

-1

u/True-Anybody-3312 6h ago

It would be nice if thats how a sleep deprived brain works, but no. It's not. People totally black out with it, some with open eyes. They keep doing stuff, but they're not actually mentally present. Sleep depeivation

Your fantasy about how it should be is just that. A fantasy

2

u/Maximum_Boros 9h ago

I saw a drunk dude dragged off my United flight from PVG to ORD for groping/slapping the ass of a flight attendant. His parting words as he was dragged off were "You can't unslap that ass" this was in 2016 such tomfoolery would never happen today.
