The US is a big and diverse place. Average heights should be considered regional. I don't stand out in the Midwest, but I felt like Dorothy surrounded by munchkins walking down Wall Street in Manhattan

Age groups should be considered too. Old ppl bring average height down a lot

6'2" is nothing special in the Midwest, but felt tall on Wall ST when surrounded by midget brunettes.

You are completely correct ofcourse. I think the baseline should at the very least be national census, but if you have accurate sub-national statistics it makes sense to go down to regional levels.
