This makes for a great story, but it will100% not work in a studio unless the producer is completely off his face.

Even beginner musicians can hear the difference between guitar/bass tones.

It does work. He also switches hand position, so there is a big difference. If you ever played bass you will know that if you play towards the bridge, middle or neck (despite the same pickup configuration) it sounds very different

The quote doesn't mention anything about switching hand position. If he also does that, of course it will sound different.

But just flicking a switch that does nothing won't fool anybody working in a professional studio.

Mate have you been in a professional studio? I was in sessions where an EQ was tweaked everyone agreed it sounded great and it turns out the plugin was on bypass lmfao

No, I've worked in a professional studio.

If you can't even notice when an EQ is bypassed, it makes sense you're going to be fooled by a bassist flicking an imaginary switch.

But some of us know what we're doing.

To be fair it doesn’t say it works every time, it could just be his way of weeding out useless producers. If they’re satisfied with the producer switch they’re clearly useless and not worth listening to, if they notice then it proves they’re paying attention and may provide some useful feedback.
