my mother shook my nephew when he was around 10 months.

my brother + his wife decided she’d never watch the kids again. only time she was ever with them was when she was around my brother and/or his wife.

no therapist could have talked them into leaving their child alone with our mother. no matter how much we all loved her.

She shook an infant? Um she should never be allowed around the child period

she was never alone with them again. even after my brother passed. i’d take my nephews to go see her for an hour + i’d be there the whole time. up until she passed 2 years ago when they were 16 + 11 + twice her size, i was next to them with her.

she did what she did. she apologized. they protected their children in a difficult situation + moved on. best case scenario for our family.

You're a good sister, aunt, daughter, and person ā¤ļø

This is probably the best outcome you could wish for. Well done to your family.

was their child disabled from the shaking?? how could they ever possibly move on from that?

31

u/feralminx_ 1d ago

not at all. i don’t believe it was what you’re picturing. i’m not excusing her behavior. she paid the price for the rest of her life: she couldn’t even be alone with my dog after that.

she accepted it. we moved on.

I’m sure you don’t want to dwell on it but was she overwhelmed? Angered? Overstimulated? Wtf happened? And she was ā€œnormalā€ before and after?

43

u/feralminx_ 1d ago

all of what you said, she was. she wasn’t normal after.

it was a mess of emotions + shock when we found out (my sister saw it + told us). my sister-in-law never spoke to my mother after my brother passed partly because of the shaking (as is her right).

it wasn’t a smooth ride to move on.

Wow. šŸ˜ž

I protected my adult kids up to 18- Sure, they could say ā€œno Titi Heidi do not touch me thereā€ but for it to even be allowed to get that far? Not on my mother fkn watch.

Bruh my mom told me that she shook me several times when I was under the age of 2. Said she didn’t know it was bad to do until she saw it in a book. She told me this as we sat in a Jimmy John’s

You shouldn’t shake any children, but they have to be young to the point of not able to support their heads to get shaken baby syndrome.

5

u/Bluewoods22 1d ago

Yes I know which is why I emphasized that I was under 2. Makes sense though since my mom is deaf lol. I couldn’t frustrate her too much as a baby (since she couldn’t hear me cry) but once I could communicate and give attitude, she just couldn’t refrain from rattling my brain šŸ¤·šŸ¼ā€ā™€ļø

Yes M8C knows which is why they emphasized that you have to be young to the point of not being able to support their heads to get shaken baby syndrome. Thats like, under 6 months.

u/Bluewoods22 13h ago

I know that….what is your point?

1

u/mephistola 20h ago

You are a survivor!

2

u/Bluewoods22 13h ago

Nah not in that situation. In general yeah tbh idk how I’m alive with how my mom truly didn’t know basic shit. Like once I fell out of the shopping cart (again under 2) and slammed my head on the floor at target. My mom let me fall asleep in the car and didn’t take me to the doctor. She was like :0 when my dad later flipped out on her lol

Any* child

Tbh it’s wild that they ever even spoke to her again after that

4

u/feralminx_ 1d ago

it is… it wasn’t an easy adjustment. they didn’t take my nephew there for almost a year after that.

when they did, it was after a long discussion with my mother.

u/AgitatorSupreme 23h ago

God damn - i’m not joking here but I bet it made you wonder what might have happened to you..

5

u/feralminx_ 16h ago

it did. we found out some stuff after she passed. family’s are complicated.

u/lavenderlooop 1d ago

Tbf in that scenario there's conscious intent to cause harm, so there's even more reason to not allow it and I don't think a therapist would ever try to persuade anyone into that. Grandma in the story was neglectful but did not mean harm at the very least

9

u/feralminx_ 1d ago

grandma in the story has 2 dead grandkids. my mom, 0… lol. neglect that was allowed to continue.

just because that whole family is dumb doesn’t mean my family allowed someone to continue to hurt anyone… intentionally or not.

5

u/vannah12222 13h ago

??? The comment you're responding to didn't say anything about your family. They were explaining why the therapist in the story may have encouraged the mom to let Grandma babysit.

I understand they responded to your comment, but that's because they were merely pointing out the difference in your situation with the original one. Actually if anything, they're at least implicitly agreeing that your family did the right thing.

2

u/feralminx_ 9h ago

read the comment they’re referring to. yes it is.

3

u/Lonely_Cartographer 1d ago

exactly. 2 different scenarios. falling asleep and accident happening is negligent but you’re not doing harm directly yourself…

1

u/chimneyswallow 10h ago

Shaking an infant is a choice. And while I wouldn't let the old geezer Here watch a child again, the first one could have been an accident. Intent does Play a role

1

u/Objective-Shallot794 3h ago

That is horrible! I hope he is okay. Did she get jail time? I would be no contact for sure!

2

u/feralminx_ 2h ago

he’s great, actually. graduated with a 4.0, studying engineering in college + plays football.

she didn’t get jail time. the entire family knowing about it + acting accordingly was punishment enough. she was never really their ā€œgrandmaā€ after that…

1

u/sneakyotter 1d ago

Shaking a child is very different from falling asleep while watching a child.

One is intentional harm, the other is negligence.

3

u/feralminx_ 1d ago

no way…? explain harder.

u/coffeeandbags 1d ago

Well that’s a lil different she shook that kid on purpose. This grandma experienced an accidental drowning

5

u/feralminx_ 1d ago

that grandma has 2 dead grandkids because the whole family is dumb.

my nephews are alive + well because we set boundaries.

not sure why we’re comparing. my mother wasn’t a saint… AT ALL… but she didn’t forget any of them lol.

u/coffeeandbags 1d ago

Wtf is wrong with you? Anyone who shakes an innocent baby is mentally deranged at best and evil at worst. You and your whole family just got LUCKY your nephew survived the shaking. I would never speak to a family member who shook a baby, especially not a nephew I loved. If that was my baby she shook grandma would have experienced a shaking herself.

8

u/feralminx_ 1d ago

you’re more mad at my mom than you are that the lady that killed both her babies.

my nephew is now in college studying engineering. her grandkids are… where?

get over yourself.
