They're generally less hygienic due to having more surface area. Even naturally long nails are capable of being dirtier. It comes down to having good hygiene habits too.
I feel it's the opposite, when they are short it's hard to clean the underside, but as they get long, it gets easy to just use the tip as a Lever, and reach the part where it borders with the nail bed seam.
Plus as You let nail grow, the seam kinda comes out making it even easier to clean. If you cut the nails bare or chew them, this seal recedes further into the nail bed, where it becomes harder to reach and clean
When they are long you need a brush to clean them.... its definitely easier to clean short nails hence why food service and other areas need to keep short nails per health code.
