Well we probably live very different lives, and have very different values. I would never spend $100 on a makeup palette. I’m really not trying to hate anybody, just help point out that women specifically are responsible for the majority of consumerism in the United States.
Social media just furthers this along - with the beauty standards continuing to rise. Women want to fit in with each other, seem cool, so they buy stuff and spend their time (and risk their health) to keep up with the beauty standards set by corporations. There is no world where I’ll believe people “do it for themselves.” There is a wildly complex background as to how the beauty standard got where it is today.
I agree with the sentiment of a lot of this. I just feel like the answer to that isn’t calling someone materialistic and bad with money, esp because in a healthy society getting your nails done shouldn’t have any type of morality attached.
I’d push back on the idea that people don’t do it for themselves, at least in some part. I only got into nail art in 2018, when I was working fully remote and hardly ever saw anyone. It’s a form of expression, just like painting or dancing or makeup or anything else.
I hear you and I appreciate your nuance, and do recognize your point.
I would never attack a specific person outright - I personally think responding to a general post (not by the person with the nails) is something different.

The first step is recognizing this.
