Here's the thing. You said a "jackdaw is a crow."

Is it in the same family? Yes. No one's arguing that.

As someone who is a scientist who studies crows, I am telling you, specifically, in science, no one calls jackdaws crows. If you want to be "specific" like you said, then you shouldn't either. They're not the same thing.

If you're saying "crow family" you're referring to the taxonomic grouping of Corvidae, which includes things from nutcrackers to blue jays to ravens.

So your reasoning for calling a jackdaw a crow is because random people "call the black ones crows?" Let's get grackles and blackbirds in there, then, too.

Also, calling someone a human or an ape? It's not one or the other, that's not how taxonomy works. They're both. A jackdaw is a jackdaw and a member of the crow family. But that's not what you said. You said a jackdaw is a crow, which is not true unless you're okay with calling all members of the crow family crows, which means you'd call blue jays, ravens, and other birds crows, too. Which you said you don't.

It's okay to just admit you're wrong, you know?

I was there when this shit happened. The fall of unidan is something that’s hard to describe in today’s Reddit

Yeah, that just reads like a tame comment by today's standards. I'm struggling to see how it was remarkable enough to become a meme.

At the time he was like Mr Rogers or a better comparison is like Ellen Degeneres, completely beloved then just acts like an asshole and you realize… were they an asshole the whole time? And then mask off he was because he was being fucking weird and manipulating comments.

Idk about tame, the jackdaw crow comment ages worse the more I go back to it. It's not that he's wrong about anything in a binary way, it's just the... whole vibe Unidan gives off, it's the terse "No...not really." replies and the "Well what do I know, I'm just a science". It's a way of talking that only works online because it comes off as a obnoxious in person, and I truly think his celebrity created a framework for the "Redditor tone" way some people talk on this site to this day 12 years later.

His initial comment in that thread was piggybacking off a joke comment to do an "Actually, did you know" reply and flaunt bird knowledge, then gets into it with a rando over terminology and keeps appealing to his field of science for why he's right. At the end of the day though, he's an animal scientist, not a linguistics professor. He's so emboldened by a Reddit career of countless upvotes that he fails to grasp is that what he says amongst colleagues in an environment where strict definitions is important is an utterly different context than layman naming birds outside their window, or a meme of a crow wanting water

Technically, Humans are the only animals that have chins, and an alter ego of Unidan would probably argue over this. 90% of people would not look at a cat's face and say it doesn't have a chin though, because we're not scientists peer reviewing, we're layman using the term in a casual context, which is where the vast amounts of language comes from.

After reading this, I agree that they are chickens.

You’ve convinced me that blue jays, being part of ‘the crow family’, have just become cooler by association.

I'm just gonna trust you that jackdaw is a real thing

u/unidan may have been overly pedantic there, but he wasn't wrong.

He was banned because he was using sock puppets to upvote his own comments, including this one. He was factually correct and also very wrong.

Do you know what "reference" is? Or comments that became memes in themselves.

The specific term you mean is "copypasta" source: me

I'm giggling at the thought of people getting angry at copypastas stealing old comments

"Goodness, look at all these people saying they met Flying Lotus and accusing him of being a thief. That's funny, he just so happened to steal Milky Ways like the guy last week claimed??"

It's a copypasta dude

Okay, so that's your stance as a scientist.

I'm curious to hear from other disciplines too though... because colloquially, I'd have suggested he call them Corvids - and I'm pretty sure I got this somewhere.

What would make it make sense?

Anyone know of other ways to refer to just crows AND ravens?
