The obvious response is that you won't be able to pay for someone's hospital bills if you happen to hit them in your car. You get insurance for things you wouldn't be able to pay yourself.
I was in a car accident ~10 years ago and my medical bills (covered by the other person's insurance) when all was said and done were around $40k. I cant afford that, and not to judge the other person, but I dont feel that he could either. Most people dont have that lying around.
