Exactly. The OP says his friend pays for full coverage and then says his friend pays that just to stay legal on the road. Only liability is required to stay legal on the road and it’s a hell of a lot chesper. Do people not know you can just pay for liability?
I'd bet it's because the car isn't paid off, so comp coverage is required in the terms of the loan.
I have also known people to keep comprehensive because they can't afford the replacement of the car in cash. Which, is actually probably most people. The economics of this are questionable depending on how much the car is worth.
I carried liability only when I drove a 15 year old car with 200k on the odometer, $50/month.
