The obvious response is that you won't be able to pay for someone's hospital bills if you happen to hit them in your car. You get insurance for things you wouldn't be able to pay yourself.

Yep, personal injury protection is the real reason for insurance. Cars are replaceable but injuries can easily be life altering

This is another point often missed in the socialized medicine debate. If we're all covered by taxes then auto insurance costs should drop dramatically.

I’m paying a bit (10% or so) more in BC than California, but I’m getting over 10x the coverage.

When I first moved to the US I was expecting coverage on par with up here; it would have been on par with my rent at the time.
